The New Way Things Work34 reviews
David Macaulay

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1998

Ingenuity. Imagination. Depictions. Diagrams.
Put these four things together--ingenuity, imagination, depictions, diagrams-- and you have a double ID toward understanding how things work. David Macaulay and Neil Ardley put together a magnificent volume for children and children at heart containing a way of understanding the laws of physics and mechanics. The first illustration even shows God busy creating the rotation of the earth. Then ...

A Porcupine Named Fluffy19 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1986

Very fun to read
I bought this for my three year old daughter...again based on reviews on amazon. Other reviewers were right: this book is a hoot. Everytime we get to: "H...H...H...H...H...Hippo" my daughter bursts out laughing. Highly recommended. Great illustrations set off the writing.

Black and White16 reviews
David Macaulay

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 2005

My opinion: The most creative of the Caldecotts
David Macaulay is known for his architectural books: Pyramid, Castle, and City: a Story of Roman Planning and Construction and their accompanying videos. However, this Caldecott winner is a demonstration of that soaring Macaulay imagination! Macaulay posts this warning right on the title page: "This book appears to contain a number of stories that do not necessarily occur at the same time. ...

David Macaulay

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1977

Fascinating Book
After reading this book, I gave it to my grandson for Christmas and he is enjoying it very much. It is interesting not only to him but to his father as well. It really makes history and social progress come alive.

Gooney Bird Greene22 reviews
Lois Lowry

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 2002

Gooney Bird is an Original!
I read this book to my fourth graders, and they loved it! Gooney Bird is an original thinker who always tells the truth! We had fun speculating exactly how her "wild" tales could be true, before we read on. Gooney Bird also discusses the ways to make writing better, and kids can learn from that as well. The book would be good to use in writing classes. Plus, it's just plain fun!

TACKY PENGUIN PA+AUDIO39 reviews
Helen Lester, Lynn M. Munsinger

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1991

Funny and touching
Helen Lester's books all combine sweet stories with terrific humor that both children and adults can enjoy. The stories are just the right length and have a nice hidden message as well--you may be different but that can be a plus! The whole Tacky series is wonderful.

Looking Back: A Book of Memories17 reviews
Lois Lowry

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1998

Teachers, mothers, writers!! YOU MUST READ THIS!
Browsing at my local library, I stumbled upon this book. "HMMMM, this looks interesting," I thought to myself. Little did I know that I had found a book that would bring me to my knees crying and give me one of the biggest "book hangovers" ever. This book followed me through my weekend, and inspired me as a writer ( who wishes she could write with even 1/100th of Lowry's talent) a teacher (who ...

Motel of the Mysteries30 reviews
David Macaulay

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1979

this book is a "scream!"
When this book first was published, the Hotel Technology department head inadvertently had the college library purchase this book for the department. When it arrived we laughed hysterically about it, and many times, I have laughed about it ever since. Two years ago, I ordered a copy for the library where I am currently a Children's Librarian. It did not even make it to the "stacks", someone ...

City: A Story of Roman Planning and Construction18 reviews
David Macaulay

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1974

A Ground Breaking Book
When David Macaulay published this book in 1974, he was following in the path of the great American illustrators Edwin Tunis and Eric Sloane. They produced many memorable history books for young adults in the years following the Second World War. Tunis and Sloane blended well written history with well done pen and pencil illustrations. "City" follows the standard convention of beginning with a ...

Anastasia Again Book Reiview
Anastasia Again is about a girl that is in the 6th grade and moves to the suburbs. The Willoughbys13 reviews
Lois Lowry

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 2008

A whole bunch of fortunate events for these old-fashioned orphans
Such a pleasure to find a truly versatile author. Lowry is as adept at the huge poignancy of THE GIVER and NUMBER THE STARS as she is with wicked drollery and with in her Krupnik tales and in this latest offering. While this one makes much of traditional children's literature and its myriad orphans from JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH to HUCKLEBERRY FINN to THE SECRET GARDEN, these is no mention of ...

Me First11 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1992

Great Moral
This is a great book for kids of all ages. I read it to my fourth graders the first day of every school year, and this year I bought copies for all of the other fourth grade teachers. Pinkerton always has to be first, until his greed teaches him a lesson that allows him to happily take the last seat on the bus.

Underground9 reviews
David Macaulay

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1976

Great Visual Imagination and Wit
Most book illustrators portray buildings from an eagle's eye perspective. A few talented illustrators will open up the buildings and give insightful cross sectional views. What makes this book so special is that David Macaulay shows us buildings from the perspective of looking up from the bedrock on which the building rests. This is unique and is typical of Macaulay's great visual imagination ...

Baaa10 reviews
David Macaulay

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1985

Gets the Mind Going
The best thing about this book is that the author never explicitly explains what happened. I read it aloud to my 5th grade class as a prelude to a lesson on making inferences, and the students found it absorbing and challenging. Don't assume that it's for young children because it's a picture book: the story is really too dark and the themes too complex for most children under ten. Teachers ...

Swan Lake9 reviews
Mark Helprin

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1989

A truly beautiful book
I still remember the first time I read Swan Lake; I was in tears. I was not sad, exactly, but deeply moved. This book is timeless, and the prose is beautifully balanced. The story itself is strong and very well-written, with some very neat characters. This book could be read to slightly older children, and there are clear-cut 'villains' and 'heroes', but the heroes are human, they can fall ...

Score One for the Sloths11 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 2003

Silly sloth book
Sleepy Valley has a school just for sloths. The sloth children sleep through their classes, and they sleep through recess, too, just like their teacher. One day, a new energetic sloth named Sparky shows up and tries to get them excited about something- -about anything! But she doesn't have much success. Then the superintendent, a real boar, comes to inspect the school, and it's up to Sparky to ...

Martha Blah Blah11 reviews
Susan Meddaugh

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1998

Entertaining for kids AND adults!
I was lucky enough to come across this book while searching for a birthday gift for a little friend of mine. I was intrigued by the title, picked it up, and then had to read the ENTIRE thing. What a fabulous book! The words are clearly printed on a white background, the pictures are large and colorful, and the humor in what Martha says will keep readers of all ages entertained. Not only does the ...

Listen, Buddy9 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1995

What a great book about listening.
This book was better than I anticipated. Buddy the rabbit goes along his merry way without listening correctly to anyone. Then he runs into the Scruffy Varmit who doesn't put up with little bunnies who won't listen. Buddy almost ends up as Scruffy's soup du jour, but Buddy learns the lesson finally and listens perfectly. My kids love this book with the wonderful illustrations in it. I love ...
