The Middle Passage: From Misery to Meaning in Midlife (Studies in Jungian Psychology By Jungian Analysts)21 reviews
James Hollis

Inner City Books, 1993

Hollis Does A Helluva Job With This One
I have had the priviledge of sitting through hours of James Hollis' lectures at Houston's Jung Center. His writing style is very compact but pacts a punch (Hemingway for Jungian Wanderers, if you will). He takes the notion of the "mid-life crisis" to the appropriate realm of "mid-life transformation" by illustrating the WHY of the formerly named "crisis". Taking his words (and always keeping ...

Under Saturn's Shadow: The Wounding and Healing of Men (Studies in Jungian Psychology By Jungian Analysts)8 reviews
James Hollis

Inner City Books, 1994

Painful but necessary reading
I am total James Hollis fan. I have now read four of his books and have found them liberating. Visit his website for a clue for why he is so effective - he is not 30 years of age with limited life experience. He commenced his training only after he completed another successful career in academia. Most would have been content to have lived the life he already had. He has the life skills and ...

The Pregnant Virgin: A Process of Psychological Transformation (Studies in Jungian Psychology By Jungian ...2 reviews
Marion Woodman

Inner City Books, 1997

Deep, Poignant, Insightful and meaningful
I tend to get attracted by a sort of synchronicity or intuitive feeling to certain books that resonate with the current process of what I call my spiritual journey. This book is one of those I would cherish and remember, and refer to, and meditate upon it. It is not only writen by someone deeply in touch with psychological understanding but also by a person inmersed consciously on her spiritual ...

The Eden Project: In Search of the Magical Other (Studies in Jungian Psychology By Jungian Analysis, 79)8 reviews
James Hollis

Inner City Books, 1998

Hands down the best book I ever read!!
I have read this book a number of times and glean new wisdom every time. It explained every mystery of human relationship that has baffled me for 50 years. The insight I gained helps me understand other people as well as myself in both personal and professional relationships. Hollis can synthesize Jung better than any author or teacher working today, and uses literature and poetry which ...

Swamplands of the Soul: New Life in Dismal Places (Studies in Jungian Psychology By Jungian Analysts)9 reviews
James Hollis

Inner City Books, 1996

Strengthened with literature and poetry
I have read several of this author's books. I found this book to be his most compelling book. Each chapter can be taken separately if you like and I like to wonder back through, re-reading different chapters to get a closer study. More than most psychology writers and even Jungian writers, Mr. Hollis adds beauty to his work with his extensive and well taken quotes from literature. I will never ...

James Hollis

Inner City Books, 2003

Willing to be Asked the Questions
"On This Journey We Call Our Life - Living the Questions (Studies in Jungian Psychology by Jungian Analysts) is one of the 4 books by Hollis I own which include a superb audio book on CD he cogently narrates titled "The Middle Passage - From Misery to Meaning in Midlife". On This Journey... was published in 2003 and is his third latest book - his most recent being "Finding Meaning in the Second ...

Addiction to Perfection: The Still Unravished Bride: A Psychological Study (Studies in Jungian Psychology, ...9 reviews
Marion Woodman

Inner City Books, 1982

Woodman at her best
This book has gone a long way toward helping me bring some key issues in my life and dreams to consciousness. Having read a lot of Woodman's writings, I'd have to say this may be her key book. After reading the review written by the reviewer below I'm reminded of the fact that the Jungian way of thinking is not for everyone. Those who tend to take life events, stories, dreams, and ...

Alchemy: An Introduction to the Symbolism and the Psychology (Studies in Jungian Psychology)5 reviews
Marie-Louise Von Franz

Inner City Books, 1981

A meeting with a remarkable mind
I first discovered Marie-Louise Von Franz in her collaboration with Emma Jung in their extraordinary book "The Grail Legend", which is by far the most intellectually coherent book I have ever encountered regarding that material, in which they place those strange and surreal stories in the framework of a Jungian perspective on the history of consciousness. In these lectures on alchemical ...

Descent to the Goddess (Studies in Jungian Psychology)8 reviews
Sylvia Brinton Perera

Inner City Books, 1981

The Deep and True Feminine
As an astrologer, Jungian and VisionCoach, I often recommend this book to my clients as a healing journey. It is probably necessary to have a little Jungian and mythological background to enjoy this particular approach to the universal truth of the female. The style is elevated and uses language familiar to Jungian analysts. You cannot imagine what you will find in this book, though -- it is so ...

Creating a Life: Finding Your Individual Path8 reviews
James Hollis

Inner City Books, 2000

Hard questions & no easy answers
As with his previous books, Hollis offers more than just his considerable knowledge: he draws upon his life experience as a human being, with all of its joys and sorrows, as well as the artistic riches of our finest poets & novelists. This is no simple self-help book, with vague, homogenized talking points & feel-good aphorisms. Hollis makes it clear that some of our most pressing & urgent ...

The Mysterium Lectures: A Journey Through C.G. Jung's Mysterium Conjunctions (Studies in Jungian Psychology ...2 reviews
Edward F. Edinger

Inner City Books, 1995

Excellent commentary on Jung's major work
This book is a section by section commentary on Jung's Mysterium Coniunctionis. Alchemy is a confusing topic by itself. Jung's interpretation of it is highly nuanced and can easily be confusing as well. And so one needs someone with the insight and knowledge of an Edward Edinger to lead the reader throught the murky terrain of Jung's text. I had a college professor once say to me "A bad ...

The Sacred Prostitute: Eternal Aspect of the Feminine (Studies in Jungian Psychology By Jungian Analysts, Vol ...12 reviews
Nancy Qualls-Corbett

Inner City Books, 1988

from ancient history to modern psychotherapy
Dr. Qualls-Corbett claims that modern people are wounded by our separation of sexuality from spirituality and suggests that the study of the ancient sacred prostitutes and sexually oriented temple priestesses will assist in a conscious "union of opposites," restoring sexuality to its rightful place in spiritual and religious thought. While her alchemical view of sexuality is firmly grounded in ...

Jungian Dream Interpretation: A Handbook of Theory and Practice (Studies in Jungian Psychology By Jungian ...2 reviews
James A. Hall

Inner City Books, 1983

Theory and Practice of Understanding Your Dreams
This compact discussion of the Jungian method of dream analyses is a thorough examination of basic concepts as they are applied in practical dream interpretation. The author, a psychiatrist and Jungian Analyst, clearly outlines the process of understanding dreams and addresses their purpose. Dreams are for "problem solving and personality development." First they are compensation for ...

Narcissism and Character Transformation: The Psychology of Narcissistic Character Disorders (190p)5 reviews
Nathan Schwartz-Salant

Inner City Books, 1986

The reality of Echo and Narcissus today
The most surprising fact about the myth of Narcissus as the Greeks told it is that it is not about a mythical man who could not recognize his own reflection. It is about a severe psychological blindness that accounts for many problems that prevent communication between individuals. The Narcissus relates to a 'reflection', his own reflection and by this I mean his inner perception which seems to ...

On Divination and Synchronicity: The Psychology of Meaningful Chance. Originally Presented As Lectures at the ...4 reviews
Marie-Louise von Franz

Inner City Books, 1980

Synchronize this!
This book is incredible. It's presented in the format of the original lectures that it was based on (Sometimes that means she repeats important points for the audience's memory, but it never hurts, and its the only stylistic oddity). Content-wise it is mind-blowing. I like Marie Louise Von Franz so much because she takes all these obtuse ideas that Jung had, and gets them to make so much sense ...

Creation of Consciousness: Jung's Myth for Modern Man (Studies in Jungian Psychology, 14.)3 reviews
Edward F. Edinger

Inner City Books, 1984

philosophically limited but excellent Jungian reading
Although Edinger never really understood current discoveries in epistemology, he treats the topic of consciousness and its origins from a superbly depth-psych perspective, spicing the book with priceless observations and commentary. I wish it had been a longer book--very enjoyable. There is a remarkable section in which Edinger defends his thesis that the ego's individuative activities leave some ...

Transformation of the God-Image: An Elucidation of Jung's Answer to Job (Studies in Jungian Psychology By ...2 reviews
Edward F. Edinger

Inner City Books, 1992

Excellent in-depth treatment of Jung's most famous book
Jung has said that Answer to Job is the one book he wrote he wouldn't change. Answer to Job covers more than psychology, it is a book of poetic dimensions. It is notoriously hard to understand. Edinger's work opens up the contents of Answer to Job. Every page of this wonderful little book is brimful of insights taking one from appreciation of Answer to Job to understanding. Edinger has a ...

The Secret World of Drawings: A Jungian Approach to Healing Through Art (Studies in Jungian Psychology By ...3 reviews
Gregg M. Furth

Inner City Books, 2002

a woman who runs with the wolves
An excellent, well written, concise, comprehensive and clear introduction for professionals and lay people as well, curious about and interested in understanding drawings. Actually, the best book I have read in the field. I especially appreciate, that it offers GUIDELINES in interpretating pictures, without presuming to have/posess a set of rigid assumptions about the exact meaning of any of the ...

The Mystery of the Coniunctio: Alchemical Image of Individuation (Studies in Jungian Psychology By Jungian ...2 reviews
Edward F. Edinger

Inner City Books, 1994

A clear respresentation of the alchemical process
I thought the Rosarium essay in particular was very clearly written and much easier to understand than reading from Jung's exposition. I'm quickly becoming an Edinger fan.

Archetypal Patterns in Fairy Tales (Studies in Jungian Psychology By Jungian Analysts)1 review
Marie-Louise von Franz

Inner City Books, 1997

Deep insight into the inner meaning of fairy tales
In this volume Marie-Louise Von Franz takes six fairy tales and analyses them from a Jungian perspective. Marie-Louis's insight and clear writing style make this book very readible and her use of Jungian constructs is only used to open up a deeper level of meaning in the stories not to obscure or twist the story to fit Jungian concepts. I highly recommend it.
