The Singer/The Song/The Finale (The Singer Trilogy 1-3) 19 reviews Calvin Miller
InterVarsity Press, 1980
Awesome! This is one of those books I read over and over again. I have read it probably 20 times since my first reading. Calvin Miller puts biblical stories into narrative poems that are so well written they force you to turn the page again and again. This book is the first in the Singer Trilogy, followed by The Song and The Finale. It is a poetic retelling of three biblical books: The Singer parallels ...

The Canon of Scripture 23 reviews Frederick Fyvie Bruce
InterVarsity Press, 1988
FF Bruce's "The Canon of Scripture" The book The Canon of Scripture, by F. F. Bruce, is a thorough scholarly treatment of the history of the Holy Bible as found in its present form: Old and New Testaments, 66 books constituting the authoritative writings of the Christian church. It is formal in style and thoughtful in content. It is nearly exhaustive, presenting ideas from a broad multitude of sources, yet manages to remain an ...

Evangelism & the Sovereignty of God 29 reviews J. I. Packer
InterVarsity Press, 1991
Pressing Into God This is a remarkable and thought-provoking volume. Prof. Packer develops the view that there is an antinomy between human responsibility and the sovereignty of God. These understandings do not contradict each other and in fact exist alongside each other. We need to hold both ideas in our minds as we consider Holy Scripture and reflect on the truths of God's reality.
The work also discusses ...

Dictionary of Biblical Imagery 16 reviews
InterVarsity Press, 1998
Excellent Reference The Dictionary of Biblical Imagery is an excellent reference for obtaining expanded meanings of the different words and images of the Bible. And even if it's a "dictionary", it is an enjoyable read straight through or even just when you want to hop from one entry to another. And for the price, it's a steal.
Highly recommended!

The Mark of the Christian 15 reviews Francis Schaeffer
InterVarsity Press, 1976
A down and dirty litmus test for Christians I first read this book as a young Christian and now am impressed with how many of the concepts I have adopted in my own creed. I detest pop Christian symbols and the urge to define a Christian by market forces. Schaeffer attempts to challenge the reader into not only glimpsing in the mirror, but to really make changes accordingly.

Foundations of the Christian Faith (Master Reference Collection) 12 reviews James Montgomery Boice
InterVarsity Press, 1986
Looking for a kind Calvinist? If you're looking for a kind, generous, wonderfully readable Calvinist, (the late) Dr. Boice is your man. R.C. Sproul has said that when James Boice died it was like a form of God's judgement on the American nation. That may sound a bit over the top, but the day I heard of Boice's death, I felt a great void.
In my reviews, I don't like to rehash the contents of a book, especially an ...

Mastering Monday: A Guide to Integrating Faith And Work 17 reviews John D. Beckett
InterVarsity Press, 2006
Excellent Perspective for those Struggling with the Marketplace John Beckett has accurately captured many of the struggles and tensions Christians experience daily in the marketplace. Arminian Theology: Myths And Realities 19 reviews Roger E. Olson
InterVarsity Press, 2006
A Reformer's Must Read With "Arminian Theology: Myths and Realities" (2006) Professor Roger Olson asserts that "Arminianism is a legitimate evangelical theological option" for the 21st century. Through this well documented 250-page hardback (with dozens of footnotes in each chapter) he intervenes on the "myths" attacking Arminianism.
Olson's adroitly refutes each "myth" posited on Arminianism primarily by ...

The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament 13 reviews Craig S. Keener
InterVarsity Press, 1994
An Enriching Look at the Cultural and Historical Background of each New Testament Verse I was given this book as an ordination present back in 1996, and I have used it faithfully ever since. It is the work of Craig Keener, New Testament professor at Eastern Seminary. He works verse by verse from Matthew through Revelation, giving cultural and historical information that lies behind the text. He teaches about the different kinds of tax collectors, the roles and responsibilities of ...

Know the Truth: A Handbook of Christian Belief 9 reviews Bruce Milne
InterVarsity Press, 1999
A must-read for all serious Christians In our pragmatic, outcomes oriented age, the church has begun to lose its way. "Theology" and "Doctrine" are considered too theoretical and impractical for the needs of today. Milne reminds us that at the source of all practice is belief. He also reminds us that any movement away from basic Christian belief is to court disaster. Those who deride theology need to re-examine their hearts and submit ...

InterVarsity Press, 2001
An Excellent Exposition of Romans John R.W Stott is one of the best scholarly pastors in the world because of his academic zeal coupled with a shrewd sense of how scripture applies to our lives. This really comes through in his Romans commentary. After a brief introduction where he descrobes how the book of Romans has impacted great Christian people of faith like Martin Luther, John Wesley, and Karl Barth, he dives right into the ...

One of the best! This is an important, high quality, recent work on disciple making from a long-time practitioner who has served as a pastor and seminary teacher. Ogden surveys the low condition of discipleship in the modern church before analyzing Jesus' and Paul's approaches to making disciples. His analysis is rich in principles and useful insights. Then he provides a section on practical strategy for making ...
