Classic Vegetarian Cooking from the Middle East & North Africa 11 reviews Habeeb Salloum
Interlink Publishing Group, 2002
Quick, healthy, and tasty "recipes" for the meditteranean eater. I'm sure most people reading about "vegetarian middle-eastern" cookbooks are good cooks when they have the time and inclination. But I, for one, have grown bored with my own repertoire. Most cookbooks are more fun to read than to actually cook from. Or they have ingredients that, even living in New York City, seem annoyingly inaccessible.
This book has lots of very easy recipes that are ...

Spectrum Guide to Malawi (Spectrum Guides) 1 review
Interlink Publishing Group, 2002
a keeper I carried this text all through Malawi. It is very heavy, so I regretted the decision once I was there. However, I held onto it because I sensed that I would value it for nostalgic reasons when I returned home. This isn't a good everyday reference book for getting around the country, but valuable for its photos and loving summaries of Malawi's different regions once back from your journey.

Serpent of the Nile: Women and Dance in the Arab World 10 reviews Wendy Buonaventura
Interlink Publishing Group, 1998
FOr the Pictures, if Nothing Else I can't speak to the accuracy of Wendy Buonaventura's history of belly dancing, though I found no evidence of the most controversial complaint, that she fails to note the role of European Orientalists in fabricating our notions of Middle-Eastern dance. In fact, she discusses this very thing at length. The treasure in the book is the collection of paintings. Where else can you see Dinet's ...

Samarkand (Interlink World Fiction) 40 reviews Amin Maalouf
Interlink Publishing Group, 1998
Historical fiction about Persian history and literature - outstanding This is a translation of a novel written in French by the Lebanese author Amin Maalouf. This novel is, in fact, two loosely linked stories tied together by the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. For those who are unaware of what this is, the Rubaiyat are a series of quatrains (four line poems) written in the 11th century in Persia. They are poems about life, love, women, and destiny which I would say ...

Grandmother's Secrets: The Ancient Rituals and Healing Power of Belly Dancing 33 reviews Rosina-Fawzia B. Al-Rawi
Interlink Publishing Group, 2000
Grandmother's Secrets This is a wonderful book beginning with personal experiences by the author who is from a Middle Eastern culture that is followed by historical information and then a more practical guide for belly dancing. It gives insight into what belly dancing is really meant to mean and how it glorifies the woman's body without shame. I don't think many people (maybe Americans) realize this because it came ...

A Traveller's History of North Africa (Traveller's History) 1 review Barnaby Rogerson
Interlink Publishing Group, 2000
A Good Way to Whet the Appetite Over all, I've found the Traveller's History series of books to be a bit hit or miss. All are good at providing a good deal of the history of a nation or region, but some do so in a manner that is too dry or terse to make for enjoyable reading. Not so A Traveller's History of North Africa. Covering the land that makes up modern-day Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Algeria, Barnaby Rogerson does a ...

Haiti in Focus: A Guide to the People, Politics, and Culture (In Focus Guides) 4 reviews Charles Arthur
Interlink Publishing Group, 2002
Up-to-the-minute Information for Scholars and the Curious Sometimes it's hard to be an American, and to look out at what we've done to the rest of the world. Haiti will soon be celebrating its bicentennial of independence. As the second-oldest nation in the Western Hemisphere and the black nation with the longest uninterrupted history, it should by rights be rich, educated, forward thinking, and a bright light for the rest of the world. However, ...

Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People 29 reviews Jack G. Shaheen
Interlink Publishing Group, 2001
A MUST HAVE! I knew once I bought this book it would change my life, and it did. When a person learns to read she or he can never look at letters in the same way again. In the same way, once a person is exposed to this book and the critical lens that it offers through which to view, he or she will not be able to consume U.S. popular culture in the same way ever again.
Dr. Jack G. Shaheen, a pioneer in ...

San Francisco: A Cultural and Literary History (Cities of the Imagination Series) 2 reviews Mick Sinclair
Interlink Publishing Group, 2003
an excellent book I bought this book in preparation for a trip to San Francisco and it really helped me understand so much about the city, from the Gold Rush right up to the dotcom boom and crash. I especially liked the use of quotes from old sources that illustrate not just the past but the present as well. Overall, the book is very engaging and well written, I'd certainly recommend it for anyone seeking a deeper ...

Art for Travellers Italy: The Essential Guide to Viewing Italian Renaissance Art 2 reviews John Power, Ann Morrow
Interlink Publishing Group, 2003
Art for Travellers Demystifys Complex Subject I approached this book with some trepidation, since the Renaissance art of Italy is an enormous subject and all but the most intrepid travelers succumb at some point to museum fatigue. However, I was delighted to see that this guide gives very readable background information suitable for people with very little prior exposure to Renaissance art. At the same time it is authoritative and ...

A Taste of Lebanon: Cooking Today the Lebanese Way 15 reviews Mary Salloum
Interlink Publishing Group, 1992
My all-time favorite cookbook! I originally received this book as a gift from my husband's 90 year old Lebanese aunt, who told me the recipes are the same as they learned to cook in the old country. Well, I have tried most of the recipes in this book, and they are all delicious. One comment from one of the Lebanese cousins at my husband's birthday party was "these are better than the Lebanese make" referring to the kibby ...

Aconcagua: Summit of South America (Rucksack Pocket Summits) 4 reviews Harry Kikstra
Interlink Publishing Group, 2005
Good things come in small packages! I've been to Aconcagua before but didn't have this pocket book with me. Most authors seem to write quantity not quality. This little book is written with a climber in mind and does not sacrifice quality even though it is a small climber friendly guide. How much info do you really need to go up the mountain anyway? This book covers all and is packed with usefull information minus any fluff. ...
