Great for teachers!
This follows the play 99% of the time - every once in a while a word is substituted or a phrase turned around, but that's it. My students had no problem following the play. In fact, they prefer the taped reading over reading aloud in class. I'm in a Title I school with a high percentage of behavior problems and this was a "God send." The students listened much better with the taped reading. ...

A good recording of a great play
While I like the original 1978 soundtrack, the songs in it are a little dated at this point. This recording not only is an update of the original show, but is the complete play, spoken and song, which I think works better. I think you get more from the music, when you hear the dialogue that was written to be spoken with it as well, and the performances are very good. I bought both this and ...

The voice of conscience, morality, and idealism
The late Lord Bertrand Russell once said, "Actions have consequences." Arthur Miller makes it clear: Bad actions have bad consequences in his early play, "All My Sons." Set not long after the end of World War II, the play concerns big issues: life and death, and the necessity of living a moral life. The conflict pits the idealistic son, Chris Keller against his pragmatist father, Joe Keller, ...

an amazing dramatic experience
Based on Reginald rose's teleplay, which then became an Academy Award nominated film, TWELVE ANGRY MEN is dynamite listening. The cast is stellar, including Dan Castellaneta (remembered for the voice of Homer Simpson); Jeffrey Donovan (to be seen in Sundance's Come Early Morning); Hector Elizondo (Pretty Woman and the Princess Diaries); Robert Foxworth (who played juror #3 on Broadway); James ...

This, as Bertram Wooster might say, is the right stuff!
An early critic of P.G. Wodehouse complained that his second book was identical to his first, only the character names had changed. In response, Wodehouse resolved to continue writing identical stories, but to keep his character names the same. And so, The Code of the Woosters is nearly identical to all other Jeeves and Wooster novels; Bertie gets into a sticky situation, inadvertently makes ...

Worth paying for on the Kindle
Kindle owners hopefully are aware of the wealth of free editions of the classics which are available through Feedbooks and other sources. I obtained a copy of P&P from feedbooks originally and while it was easy to get and the price was right, the overall quality of the text is not great. I've found several typos, presumably the result of OCR errors and it's somewhat distracting. Since P&P ...

Beth Henley is the greatest!
I just finished playing Lenny in a college production of this play. It was the most fun I've ever had in any role! I have two sisters myself, and Henley's depiction of that kind of relationship is incredibly real. There are some great scenes and monologues for acting practice, too--one, two, or three women, and a couple for one man and one woman. I recommend it to anyone.

A Lesson Before Dying is a lesson for us all.
This story is set in 1940s Louisiana. A young black man is with friends who plan and execute a robbery--which goes bad quickly. The young man, Jefferson, is quickly arrested and tried for murder--even though he had no weapon and was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Enter Grant Wiggins, a young black teacher who is chafing at the racial inequality of the times. He'd like nothing more than to ...

A devastating portrait of a mother and daughter
"'night, Mother" is a tour de force conversation between a mother, Thelma, and her daughter, Jessie, who has just told her that she is going to commit suicide at the end of the night. The play is a taut high-wire act that leaves you spellbound as Thelma tries to convince her daughter not to go through with it and Jessie sternly insists. Thelma and Jessie are extremely dimensional, deep characters ...

This book and the movie are special
From the sound of the spikes on the cement, the movie is authentic. From the opening lines to the end, the book is bittersweet in it's finest form. Running around the field at Subic Bay Naval Base in the Philippines in 1976, our shortstop, Vinnie Mallozzi from South Babylon Long Island and I, the second baseman would run and without prompting would hum or whistle "The Streets of Larado." I Was Left Breathless
I recently saw a performance of M. Butterfly at a local theatre, and I was left utterly speechless. The acting was extremely powerful, which brought the story and its themes to life better than any book could. Nevertheless, I'm going to buy a copy of the play!

How I Learned to LOVE this play.
I just went to see my university production of this play, and so I decided to get the book, because it brought out so many emotions many of us have never felt before. This book is so moving and heart wrenching. Lil Bit takes you on an adventure that is so real and so scary, that you can't put the book down. If you get the chance, don't waste it on any other play. This is THE PLAY to read.

One of the best plays ever written
One of the best plays I've read, if not the best. I've spent three months directing this play, and I wouldn't have invested that time if it hadn't meant a lot to me. Let me add that I could not have asked for a better run. We blew away at least some of the audience every night -- had the whole audience leaning forward on the edge of their seats (never seen that before in a theatre!), had ...

Flawed characters and strong brutish images of greed. Great book!
I discovered this book through a recommendation from Amazon when I was ordering several turn-of-the 20th century novels. Written in 1899, by a young author who died in 1902 at the age of 32, the setting is San Francisco, the characters are flawed, and the story is filled with strong brutish images of greed. The main character, McTeague (who is never given a first name throughout the book) was ...

Eloquent, lovely, and sad
This is my very favorite book and, in my opinion, far superior to "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter." I was not an adolescent when I read it--I was 23--but I was astonished by how often McCullers was able to perfectly describe what I had believed to be indescribable experiences. In some ways I think that my attachment to the book grew from my ability to relate to Frankie's anxiety. The pace of ...

Pure Genius
Having taken part in a performance of "The Foreigner" over ten years ago, I was anxious to take a trip down memory lane. After reading the play today, I am reminded what a precise and humorous tale this is. Despite remaining relatively obscure, it is one of my favorites. Larry Shue's attention to detail and sharp wit make this play a laugh a minute and thought provoking. Charlie accompanies ...

The best play I've read
I just finished reading this play for school and really enjoyed it. I was usually used to reading Shakespeare plays which really didn't interest me whatsoever. Then, there are those new plays that also seem to always fall short of fun reads. Well, this short play with only 3 characters actually really interested me. It was sad, tragic, funny, and very interesting. It takes place in the 50s in ...
