The Scarlet Letter (Lrs Large Print Heritage Series)17 reviews
Nathaniel Hawthorne

LRS (Library Reproduction Service), 2000

The first masterpiece of American literature
"All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," might well be Nathaniel Hawthorne's theme in The Scarlet Letter. Certainly, by all community standards Hester Prynne's adultery is a sin. Worse yet Arthur Dimmesdale has triply sinned since he has had carnal knowledge of a member of his flock, and through a deep and abiding cowardice has failed to acknowledge his sin; and what is even worse ...

Anne of the Island (LRS Large Print Heritage)66 reviews
Lucy Maud Montgomery

LRS (Library Reproduction Service), 1998

i read this over and over again.
this book never gets old. i've had it for so long and now i'm off to college and i still enjoy reading it cover to cover. anne is a great character, one who is easy to love and who explains herself well. the other characters are also quirky. something about this book is very universal, which i think explains why even in this century i still find myself being able to relate to Anne. the plot, ...

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry (Large Print Cornerstone Ser)462 reviews
Mildred D. Taylor

LRS (Library Reproduction Service), 2000

A Must Read for Every Child.
This book was recommended by my child's fifth grade teacher. It was their November book of the month to read for the class. It was a stretch with the slang talk of the south but it was understandable. It was an eye opener to the children as to how things were in the 1930's. Very good book and I would recommend this book to any fifth grade class for group reading and discussion.

Building a classic library for a granddaughter
They don't seem to require reading classic literature in the schools any more, so I decided to build a library for my 12-year old granddaughter. She has read them all, including this one, so it wasn't a bad idea. Now, if I could just get her to call her old grandfather more often....

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh (Large Print Cornerstone Ser)330 reviews
Robert C. O'Brien

LRS (Library Reproduction Service), 2000

Insipid cover currently shipping
The cover art shipping now (July '08) is the beige one in the alternate images -- a useless and dull cover compared with the exciting view of Mrs. Frisby and the crow Jeremy against blue on display at this page. I wish I'd bought this in a bookstore instead, and might have had another choice of cover art. At least the interior art is the excellent classic version.

Kenneth Grahame

How could you not love this book?
We actually chose this book for our summer book club. It is really different reading it as an adult and for yourself. It was great fun! It is amazing how you can see yourself in most of the characters. Do you know people who you see in the different animals? We had a wonderful discussion.

Summer of My German Soldier (Large Print Cornerstone Ser)200 reviews
Bette Greene

LRS (Library Reproduction Service), 2000

An adult's review of an excellent book
My daughter is now too older and far too accomplished a reader in her own right to need or want me to read to her, but I wish I had known of this when we were still reading together. I read this for a couple of reasons. As a native of Little Rock I wanted to read what is perhaps the most celebrated juvenile novel to have come out of my home state. Second, I have seen it highly praised and ...

Journey to the Center of the Earth (LRS Large Print Heritage)129 reviews
Jules Verne

LRS (Library Reproduction Service), 2000

Fantasy adventure
When I was a kid, I used to read lot of Jules Verne. In those days I couldn't read neither English, nor French so I was destined to use translations which were few and of varying quality. Nevertheless, I think I'll always remember captain Nemo and his mysterious ship, his exile on the island and his death. Stories of Jules Verne always stirred my fantasy, and I guess that he should be blamed, ...

LRS (Library Reproduction Service), 2000

Big News on Woods
Life in the 1800's in the woods sure is different than it is here. I bet if that family ever came here they would be amazed. Heck, if I ever had to shoot guns or collect sap from trees I would fall asleep during it. Pa is my favorite character. He goes into town to get supplies and hunts at night what about those stories? My favorite part is when Pa is alone in the woods at night and he thinks ...

A Must-Read for Generations of Preteen Girls
I honestly believe in my heart that every American woman from about age 25-35 read this book around the same age I did. Either one of her friends told her about it, the school nurse gave it to her, or her mom bought it and said it would explain things. This book is occassionally banned by school districts due to its discussion of female puberty and religion. I don't remember it being ...

Kidnapped My Attention!
Oh, what a great book! Robert Louis Stevenson strikes a perfect balance between action and description. As previous reviews have said much about the plot and the worth of reading this wonderful book, I will add just a bit. Buy a copy of this tale for any child aged ten or older, and they'll have a story of adventure to read over and over again as they grow up! I guarantee it will be a work ...
