An excellent guide with exquisite watercolour illustrations.
Helene M. E. Schalkwijk-Barendsen's guide to the mushrooms of Northwest North America is an excellent introduction to this subject. Schalkwijk-Barendsen covers all the mushrooms one is likely to encounter in this region with both informative text and beautiful watercolour illustrations also painted by the author. Species are referenced by both common and Latin name making this book accessible ...

Excellent Resouce Book for all gardners
This book is very user-friendly and full of helpful information for the amateur gardener, which I am. It is laid out in a very helpful manner and gives much information about each plant discussed, including personal experiences of the author with various perennials. It is filled with lovely color photographs of all the plants, as well as text about each one in alphabetical order. I would ...

Amateur (and professional) ecologist's sidekick
"Plants of the Rocky Mountains" is by far the best all-around field guide for Rocky Mountain trees, shrubs and flowers (with some grasses) that I've yet seen, and ranks right up there with classics like Newcomb's Wildflower guide for the northeast. Kershaw et al. provide simple, easy-to-use keys and organize plants by growth form (trees, shrubs, flowers), family, and color, so that both ...

Great for Identification
I use this book a lot! I take it with me whenever I'm hiking, I think it's one of the better plant books out there. The pictures are great and the details help even if the picture doesn't match the season. It's a little big if your just going to carry it, but I usually toss it in my pack for long hikes. Definitely worth the purchase! I also like that it has a thicker cover and pages, just in case ...

Very Best of Its Kind
I am an advanced-amateur birder, and I own four separate bird guides. I live in the Bay Area, and this is by far the guide I use the most. I've owned it for three years, and virtually every bird I've seen has been within its pages. It's very easy to navigate because of its "thumbnails" in the opening pages - you can easily spot your bird there without having to flip through the whole guide. ...

Check it out from the library
Last time I checked New York state was a pretty large state and had a very diverse area for plants. Not according to this book. No effort is put into so many areas. Deer is a HUGE problem for gardening in New York but nothing is mentioned about deer at all. No help with how to prune, very little with upkeep for plants. No help with what works well together for soil and fertilizing. No help ...

Hands-down Favorite Smoky Mtns/TN Wildflower ID Book
I've been cataloging thousands of wildflower photos over the past six years and probably own or have "borrowed" most wildflower field ID guides that are out there. This book is easily my favorite. Why? Easy to use: A color key w/thumbnail images for more than half of the flowers in the book makes finding the right flower much easier if you do not know which family of flowers to search in. ...

Northern Bushcraft
This book is an excellent survival manual, although it is specifically focused on survival in the north woods of canada, ie. Boreal forest, or Taiga (In fact, the previous edition was titled Northern Bushcraft). The line-drawing illustrations are very good at conveying the concepts. Knife and axe-craft are a large part of this book because knowing how to work wood in these cold northern forests ...

Great!
Pam Beck's newspaper column always had great tips for the local gardener. This book does not dissapoint. This handy book is easy to carry for those many trips to the home centers or nurseries. It has good pictures of the plants and the descriptions are concise but very helpful. Every North Carolinian, especially those new to the area, should invest in this little gem.

A Very Cool Collection
Many of the stories in Jo-Ann Christensen's ghost story collection are stories I don't believe that I have never heard of in my life. There are typical urban legends, such as The Hitchhiker, the tale of a ghostly girl who haunts the area of her death, or The Hook, the legendary tale of a murderous patient who escapes from a mental hospital. But, along with urban legends, there are very original ...

Motivating - my favorite
I've had this book two years, and since that time have been hunting fungi to take pictures. They are interesting and make good subjects - and this book is motiviating with its beautiful photographs. A good 'guide' to read in the evening before going out the next day.. This is my favorite of a growing 'fungi guide' library, and the first I use when returning home from the field to look at my ...

very practical book
As a native buckeye with no plant knowledge and a black thumb, this book is great! It is an alphabetical reference to all the native trees & shrubs. It tells you their good points, bad points, tips for success, etc in a very practical format. It also has TONS of photos of how the plant looks in different seasons. We moved out of the city & onto an acre, and this book has been used a lot!

This gem of a book reaches all people .
The reviews of this book on this website moved me to tears. It would be hard to add anything. What has touched me is to see patients in mental institutions and jails gain hope and self-respect as they carry this book around in settings that might seem to have the power to destroy the human spirit. This book represents for me the "misssing link"between spirituality and practical day-to-day ...

Excellent, well-written, well-organized guide
I don't believe I've ever seen a gardening book where the information was as well-organized as it is in "Perennials for Michigan." Often books of regional interest are thrown together and published on the cheap, but this book is tightly-bound, full of color illustrations, and above all, well written. And it's really about Michigan climate and Michigan soils. Someone didn't just go through and ...

Fantastic Guide for the Novice Birder in S.F. Bay Area.
For several decades I have been a casual bird observer in the south San Francisco Bay Area and my curiosity had led me to acquire several of the acclaimed major 'Bird Guides' ( Peterson's, Sibley's, National Geographic, etc.) However, I seldom was able to ID birds I saw with confidence using those guides, there were just too many possible candidates in the guides for each of my sightings and I ...

Birding
Birds of Seattle and Puget Sound is our most used identification source. We are beginners, and get confused with tomes which identify every bird in North America. This little book brings us the instant joy of identifying our flying guests while they are still at the feeder or bath. We appear to be "experts" to our house guests who marvel at the variety of birds visiting our yard.

Easy to use
I agree with the other two reviewers' comments. This book is very easy to use, proving much information in a concise yet digestible way. While it provides a lot of detail, it does not do so in a tedious way--this is a field guide that is actually READable! It is very user-friendly and has helped me clinch idenifications of even rare migrants due to the written descriptions which do not ...

The handiest Virginia plant book I've found
While this book is not a comprehensive volume, it does cover the most common landscape plants in the Virginia landscape. There is a strong emphasis on older varieties of plants and those that are BEST suited to the climate conditions of Virginia. For a new resident of Virginia who likes to do amatuer landscaping, this book is indispensible.
