The Pillars of the Earth1181 reviews
Ken Follett

Macmillan, 1995

Just like everyone else said in review...
A terrific, albeit long, book but one that demands being read and is hard to put down. If one wants to quibble, yes there are terms and language used that did not exist in that time of history. But that is easily forgiven, with good character developement, a story line backdrop, the building of a cathedral, that demands attention, and I found myself moaning in grief whenever the cathedral ...

Dame Daphne Du Maurier, Margaret Tarner

Macmillan ELT, 2005

Manderley, revisited
"Last night I dreamt I was in Manderley again." And so begins a literary classic that, to me at least, is so riveting and wonderful that you have to read it again and again. And that's what I've done -- I have read it for the third time. First published in 1938 and set some time during the 1920s, this is the tale of a nameless heroine who has no idea what she's gotten herself into when she ...

Simple Genius128 reviews
David Baldacci

Macmillan, 2007

Great as an audio book!
Sometimes books are great when reading, others when listening, and a few as movies. I listened to this book via my public library free audio downloads and enjoyed it very much, however I think it may have been a bit slow in some parts had I en devoured to read it.

I've read them all . ..
I have about every book about William Shatner and this one is very good. It's nice that it goes up through his current life. This one is written in a different style then the otheres and it's quite an enjoyable read.

Things Fall Apart (Macmillan Reader)526 reviews
Chinua Achebe, John Davey

Macmillan ELT, 2005

A classic, with good reason
This is an extraordinary book in its ability to narrate both a story of cultural dissonance and an overarching tale about the human condition. Achebe's novel broaches the subject of morality, but demonstrates that even the concept of "evil" is subject to a cultural interpretive context. Okonkwo, the book's tragic hero, is an emblem of tradition, but also represents how tradition can be ...

A Wolf at the Table: A Memoir of My Father69 reviews

Macmillan Audio, 2008

This book made me cry..
I was a bit suspicious about this book because of the negative reviews with one or two stars, but I can't begin to tell how I'm so glad I got to read this book. Not only because I'm Augusten's biggest fan, but A Wolf At The Table is, without a doubt, clearly one of his masterpieces that made me teary at the end. I highly recommend this book.

Great Gatsby1116 reviews
F. Scott Fitzgerald

Macmillan Pub Co, 1920

Fantastic! One of my Favorite Books!
Aside from making a powerful statement about the so called "American Dream," this novel is brilliantly written. Mr. Fitzgerald's mastery of the English language is evident in his genius sentence structure and meticulous word choice. One cannot help but stop reading to simply marvel at some of his phrasing. I highly recommend Gatsby to anyone out for great read.

Chronicles of Narnia Trade975 reviews
C. S. Lewis

Macmillan, 1986

A good trip back
I think of all the options available at Amazon, this is the most cost-effective. The only thing I recommend doing is to read the books in their original published sequence and not the chronological timeline. The reasons for reading this by chronology is simply thin--despite what the book description may say at the back of this volume. Besides, you lose the mystery of discovering Narnia through ...

Into the Wild1168 reviews
Jon Krakauer

Macmillan, 1998

Provoking
This story shares a tale about life and death--real life and real death. Make no mistake, you know how this ends. But it's not the ending--it's the journey. It's about the people left behind, and the effect one soul can have when paths cross on the street called life. I read few non-fiction books like this. I recommend fewer. But I humbly request you read this one. Listen, learn, and ...

Married Lovers9 reviews
Jackie Collins

Macmillan Audio, 2008

ANOTHER SUMMER HEATWAVE FROM JACKIE COLLINS!
Jackie returns with another instant classic! MARRIED LOVERS is vintage Collins, a rollercoaster ride of bed-hopping, back-stabbing, Hollywood bitches and bastards. There's a mid-novel twist that will have you reeling, plus a dark rags to riches subplot involving a young Russian beauty that is the stuff of brilliant potboilers. Sinful summer reading. It's chocolate cake for the beach. Note to ...
