Essays of E.B. White18 reviews
E. B. White

Mcgraw-Hill College, 2000

Word genius
Twenty two of the essays appeared in THE NEW YORKER. White had candor. His piece on the death of his pig is masterful. He examined his own feelings and community reaction. The role of his dachshund, Fred, is described amusingly. It is no wonder White wrote so winningly for children. In 1954 when he had no television he was looked upon as an eccentric. During Hurricane Edna radio worked ...

Random House Webster's College Dictionary14 reviews
RANDOM HOUSE

Mcgraw-Hill College, 1998

No confusion here
I have been using the Random House College dictionary since I received it as a gift in 1981. I found these reviews while I was looking for a newer edition. I have my original Random House College Dictionary(that's what it says on the dust jacket and the cover) sitting here on my desk, in its original RED dust jacket, although the rest of the book is falling to pieces from use. I really wonder ...

Biology8 reviews
Peter H. Raven

Mcgraw-Hill College, 1999

One of those books you take with you on a deserted island
.....or if you had to travel back in time. I had this for my textbook in Biology back in 1987 and even then, .... well before the human genome was anywhere near being charted, let alone completed, this was a spectacular acomplishment. This book isn't riveting like say Druyan and Sagan's SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESOTRS is, but it is as good as any biology textbook can possibly be. It has ...

Clear Springs18 reviews
Bobbie Ann Mason

Mcgraw-Hill College, 2000

Wonderful!
Bobbie Ann Mason has done a wonderful job with "Clear Springs". I did not grow up in Kentucky in the baby boom generation, but I did grow up in rural southern Missouri just after it, and this story is so very like what I was familiar with. Ms. Mason is of my mother's generation and except for the disfunction there are many similarities between this story and stories my mother has told. My family ...

Advanced Mathematical Methods for Scientists and Engineers (International Series in Pure and Applied ...14 reviews
Carl M. Bender, Steven A. Orszag

Mcgraw-Hill College, 1978

The Classic Text on Asymptotics
I am a mathematics professor, and asymptotic methods is my area of expertise. Bender and Orszag was the standard text on this topic in the early 1980s, and it remains by far the most thorough book on the subject. I had two courses from it in graduate school and have taught from it 3 times now. I have never found a mistake. The book is very well written; its only weakness is that its graphics ...

Physics for Poets7 reviews
Robert H. March

Mcgraw-Hill College, 1992

Can be used as Refreshment for Survivors of Freshman Physics
March gets it just right by employing the soft to understand the hard. I read this book during my sophomore (after having finished my ABET accredited physics) Christmas vacation. It started me on a path that lead to a very powerful and useful understanding of physics.

Computer Organization8 reviews
V. Carl Hamacher, Zvonko G. Vranesic

Mcgraw-Hill College, 2001

excellent, thorough, and clear
I had a chance to recommend this to a colleague just last week. It is easily twice the price of the "competing" books on the market, but you get what you pay for. With this book plus (perhaps) a hands-on course in the microprocessor laboratory--interfacing various logic families to output devices, e.g., or whipping up a robot of limited capabilities--the student gains the ultimate understanding ...

Advanced Calculus6 reviews
Robert Creighton Buck, Ellen F. Buck

Mcgraw-Hill College, 1978

Great and accessible
This book provides a very readable and insightful account of the material that is usually covered in two semesters of advanced undergraduate courses usually called "Advanced Calculus" or "Real Analysis." Explanations are clear and concepts are well motivated. The problem sets are well-selected, and are do-able after reading the relevant chapters. This book is highly recommended for engineers ...

Operation and Modeling of the Mos Transistor (Mcgraw Hill Series in Electrical Engineering, Vlsi, ...7 reviews
Yannis P. Tsividis

Mcgraw-Hill College, 1987

Excellent addition to your library
I don't usually write reviews unless the book is either very poor or very good. This is one of the best books on my shelf. If you want to know the MOS transistor this is the book. Well researched, excellent explanations, excellent appendices. Other authors of technical books should use this as an example of how to write a good technical book.

The Federalist: A Commentary on the Constitution of the United States5 reviews
Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, ...

Mcgraw-Hill College, 1964

The framers of the Constitution in their own words
An essential book for every American both young or old, male or female, Democrat or Republican. A delightful discovery on the need of God and guns (or perhaps swords) in the United States and the intolerance of a government in charge of all but answerable to noone. An undeniably perfect fit for todays culture. Discover your roots from the men that gave their lives for the signing of the ...

Understanding Human Sexuality6 reviews
Janet Shibley Hyde

Mcgraw-Hill College, 1990

Sex: More Than You Could Know
This was the text used in my Human Sexuality course at Western Michigan University in the fall of 2007. I enjoyed reading it, very thorough and indepth, covering a wide range of sexual topics. The authors, who are also educators, use humor at times in the text, as well as paying respect to the seriousness of the topic. Very fair and unbiased in my opinion on it's take of sexual pathways taken in ...

Timothy Lethbridge

Mcgraw-Hill College, 2004

The Elements of Music: Concepts and Applications5 reviews
Ralph Turek

Mcgraw-Hill College, 1988

The Elements of Music: Concepts and Applications
This is an excellent book for gaining a good fundamental knowledge of music theory. I picked the book up at a university bookstore where it is used in a formal music department instructional setting. However, the mature, disciplined musician who can set aside study time to work through this book for self instruction will enjoy it and greatly improve their musical ability. In particular, I ...

Excellence in Business Communication5 reviews
John V. Thill, Courtland L. Bovee

Mcgraw-Hill College, 1995

Wonderful reference book
I use this book for my primary text in a Business and Professional Communication class that I teach. The students like how the book is organized; I appreciate the examples that we can use in class for discussion. Beyond that, the AIDA approach to business writing is clear and easy to use once students get the hang of it. My students' major project is to work with an organization in solving a ...

Power System Analysis5 reviews
Hadi Saadat

Mcgraw-Hill College, 1998

An excellent introduction to power system analysis!
The author's presentation of power system analysis is very appropriate for those studying the subject for the first time. Concepts are presented clearly and the examples illustrate well the discussion in the text. The mathematical level is easily within reach for senior electrical engineering students. One very helpful feature of this book is that answers are supplied for practically all ...

Elementary Statistics: 4th A Step By Step Approach6 reviews
Allan G. Bluman

McGraw-Hill College, 2000

Bluman's statistics book
This is THE BEST elementary statistics book I have read. Covers all concepts in a very easy to understand manner. The examples and solved problems show you eaxctly how a problem can be approached. For non-statiscians who want to use statistics to analyze their data, this is an excellent starting point. Wont boggle you with extensive formulae and derivations. But will tell you how and why the ...

Film History: An Introduction6 reviews
Kristin Thompson, David Bordwell

Mcgraw-Hill College, 1994

comparison
here's a short comparison I made between the following 3 film history books: A History of the Cinema from Its Origins to 1970 (Eric Rhode) A Short History of the Movies (Gerald Mast) Film History: An Introduction, (Thompson-Bordwell) I was looking for a technical/historical overview of the development of cinema, without idiosyncratic criticism and with emphasis on the origins of film ...

The Finite Element Method: Basic Formulation and Linear Problems5 reviews
O. C. Zienkiewicz, R. L. Taylor

Mcgraw-Hill College, 1987

The finite element method bible
There is no more complete review of the finite element method. Furthermore, all notation is written in matrix from without any hard to read diadics. Every section gives explicitly, the implementation of the procedure discussed so there's no guess work required.
