The Three of Swords: Swords and Deviltry, Swords Against Death, Swords in the Mist1 review
Fritz Leiber

Nelson Doubleday, 1970

A GOOD FANTASY READ
This particular books is actually three books in one. The books, or stories, follow the adventures of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, now fantasy classics. Leiber is a natural story teller and actually quite a fine writer. I have enjoyed these books for years. There are three further stories to complete this tale, starting with Swords Against Wizardy and then The Swords of Lankhmar and finally ...

Two years before the mast: A personal narrative of life at sea54 reviews
Richard Henry Dana

Nelson Doubleday, 1949

Reply to "Thar She Blows!" one star review
1. "The first half of the book was great" makes the book worth three stars, not one. "If for whatever reason, you wish to find out exactly how a sailor lived, then go ahead, its a great book." makes it a 4 star book. 2. The second half is even better than the first. It's the ONLY account of Mexican California by an American, but the descriptions couldn't be better written or more interesting, ...

Big Red35 reviews
Jim Kjelgaard

Nelson Doubleday, 1946

adventures of a young man and his dog
Jim Kjelgaard is a really great writer of dog stories set in the outdoors. "Big Red" is the first of three Irish Setter books. If you like "Big Red" the second book is "Irish Red" and the third one is "Outlaw Red". Danny lives with his father in a shack back in the mountains. They run a trap line and harvest wild honey for money. They are squatters on the land of a rich man, Mr. Haggin. ...

The house of seven gables68 reviews
Nathaniel Hawthorne

Nelson Doubleday Inc, 1980

More fun than I thought it would be
Purchased in anticipation of a trip to Salem, MA to visit the actual House of the Seven Gables, I have to admit that I enjoyed this book far more than I thought I was going to. Written in 1851, The House of the Seven Gables is at once both a period romance and history of the Pyncheon family, focusing on a several week period of the lives of the current owner, Hepzibah Pyncheon, her brother ...

Little men: Life at Plumfield with Jo's boys47 reviews
Louisa May Alcott

Nelson Doubleday, 1955

My favorite Alcott novel...
Mention the name Louisa May Alcott, and most people will instantly think of "Little Women." But in my mind, the less often discussed "Little Men" is just as great, if not better. The story picks up shortly after the conclusion of "Little Women," with Jo and Frederick Bhaer running a school at Plumfield. Along with their own little Rob and Teddy, they are busy raising the neglected children of ...

Annals of the Black Company1 review
Glen Cook

Nelson Doubleday, 1986

Thrilling Tale with All the Necessary Aspects
I have read this book three times in the last 15 months. I'm on my fourth time right now. I can say without a doubt, that this is one of my favorite books. It takes place in a different time in a different world where magic, creatures, and ancient evils run wild. I know it sounds like every other Fantasy book out there, but something sets this one apart. All three of these books follow the ...

Going Home1 review
Danielle Steel

Nelson Doubleday, Inc., 1973

Well written
I am impressed with the writing style of this book. I can't believe it was her first ever published. The only reason I gave it three stars is because, hopefully, being that it was written in the 70s, a few of the heroines actions regarding her state of health in the book, which wouldn't fly these days. Unfortunately, I don't feel sorry for the heroine, and I can not identify with her feelings.

Tanith Lee - Read the Best
From the DJ flap: The Mistress of Dark Fantasy gives us two volumes in one from the "Tales From the Flat Earth" series.
