A poignant collection of excerpts of Thomas Merton's writing, spanning his entire monastic writing career: from his journals, personal letters, essays, and books. Bring the Psalms into your daily life
This book is a great follow-on to the author's CD set called Singing the Psalms. Take this book and CD into your heart, follow her wisdom, and combine it with Phyllis Tickle's trilogy of The Divine Hours. These two great teachers are all you need in order to do your own Divine Office every single day - and transform your heart and life in the process.
Where God Happens: Discovering Christ in One Another
Rowan Williams
New Seeds, 2007
The place "where God happens," according to Rowan Williams's striking new reading of the Desert Fathers and Mothers, is between each other. It's a truth that we of the twenty-first century most urgently need to learn in order to heal the experience of alienation that has become endemic to our age, and these odd and appealing ancient figures, surprisingly, hold keys to this healing. The fourth-century Christian hermits of Egypt, Syria, and ...

Deeply challanging
This is an updated and expanded edition of the great book Mother Macrina that was published by Novalis press in 2000. This Version has nearly twice as many stories and bits of wisdom to pass on the the earnest reader. This is an inspiring little volume that focuses on the wisdom of Mother Macrina, a wise woman who left a hermitage and settled in a small town in northern Ontario. Her wisdom ...
Teresa of Avila: The Book of My Life

Spiritual Value
In another review, this book has been accused of being "false and misleading." Thinking about this accusation, I am reminded of a passage in Teresa's autobiography where certain confessors attempt to convince Teresa that her mystical raptures and visions are of an unholy origin. After some judicious consideration, Teresa decided that this couldn't be so---they were most certainly from God. After ...

God, Faith, Our Heart
This is a gentle, thoughtful, personal, and inspirational small book answering the questions: "Who Is God" and how do we come to experience and know God. There are only 135 pages divided into three sections: The Mystery of God (18 chapters; The Vision of Faith (14 chapters); and Conversion of the Heart (14 chapters). Each chapter is two or three pages long. This encourages reading one chapter ...
Meister Eckhart, from Whom God Hid Nothing: Sermons, Writings, and Sayings

The Ultimate and the Divine Spark
While I had read about Eckhart for years, I was apprehensive about delving deeper into his actual writings. That is why this book is such a pleasant surprise, for the author has "moved a lot of soil" to get at his finest moments. Not only that, but since Eckhart was a mystic in the deepest sense, his meaning is perhaps clearer than that of any other medieval mind, for all true mystics are united ...

A "must" for anyone who has read and appreciated Merton's writings
Angelic Mistakes: The Art Of Thomas Merton by Roger Lipsey is a descriptive collection and history of works of art created by the mind and hand of Catholic theologian and hermit-monk Thomas Merton during the last decade of his life and which until now has remained largely unknown to the general public. Providing readers with a compendium of Merton's work with each piece being accompanied by an ...

Seek the truth & it will liberate you . . .
whenever I see these religious fanatics trying to put down yet another "heretical" work of humankind, I shudder b/c if they had the power, we'd have the inquisition all over again. Why so afraid of people reading anything they want? Specially if it would help rid us of ignorance & long-hammered traditions based on man-made politics and search for power? The converted are blinded by their ...

archbishop of cantebury on the egyptian monastics
The bland title of this book gives no hint of its powerful subject matter or of its important message. Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury and the leader of the worldwide Anglican church, introduces the Egyptian desert fathers and mothers of the fourth century in such a way as to show how and why they remain so relevant for today. I count this as one of the best books on Christian ...

Concerning the mystical, *Jesus Prayer*: The Russian mystic, Ignatius Brianchaninov (1807-1867) (pronounced... Brian-Kan-In-Nov), having studied the lives of the Saints and especially the earliest Desert Fathers from his youth, and who eventually became head of numerous monasteries in Russia beginning in 1832, authored this text on the history of the *Jesus Prayer*. ...

very moving
I can't speak to the comparison of this translation with others. All I can say is that it spoke to me. Learning about Francis in a less historical and more devotional way to me makes sense. Historicity sometimes misses the mark, while mythology sometimes hits it. I highly recommend the book.
Love Burning in the Soul: The Story of Christian Mystics, from Saint Paul to Thomas Merton

James Harpur
New Seeds, 2005
Good overview, broad coverage, historical perspective
In the preface to this book, the author states that, "This book is intended as a short introduction to the tradition of Christian mysticism over the last two thousand years. It is not aimed at theologians or other specialists but at those who have little or no knowledge of the subject matter and who wish to dip their toes into the vast ocean of mysticism." Further, "The approach I have taken is ...

It packs a punch
The book itself is compact, sturdy and handsome. Multiple small passages are well organized around themes. Each passage is rich in content so it is natural for the reader to go slowly and savor all the nuances. An excellent showcase of Thomas Merton's spirit and complexity. It is greatly appreciated.

sayings both inside & outside the tradition
I read this book as someone raised Christian who now is inspired by most of the world's religions. I'm one of those people who hasn't met a religion they didn't like! Christianity still holds a special place in my heart. Just like I've discovered sushi & Thai food since leaving home, doesn't mean I still don't like mom's home cooking! And that's what Jesus is for me: plain, good & wonderful ...

THE LETTERS OF "A MONK'S ALPHABET" SPELL EXCELLENT
A MONK'S ALPHABET is a grand little book by Father Jeremy Driscoll, a Benedictine monk. It is an alphabetized list of short reflections, stories and observations. Whimsical humor infuses many of the pieces; a few are downright funny. There are "Ah-ha!" moments of serious truth, expressions of fear and doubt regarding faith, and insight into the human condition no matter what the faith. What ...
Desert Father: A Journey in the Wilderness with Saint Anthony
James Cowan
New Seeds, 2006
The spiritual exploits of Saint Anthony the Great—the prototype of the Christian "Desert Father"—have been immortalized in stories and art since the fourth century. Here is the stunning account of a modern seeker's quest to get beneath the legends that surround Anthony and to determine whether his extreme way of life has something to offer people in today's world. James Cowan's quest takes him to Egypt, to the monastery that still exists ...
