You hold in your hands a cornucopia of modern cutting-edge fantasy. The first volume of this extraordinary new annual anthology series of fantastic literature explodes on the scene with works that sidestep expectations in beautiful and unsettling ways, that surprise with their settings and startle with the manner in which they cross genre boundaries, that aren't afraid to experiment with storytelling techniques, and yet seamlessly blend ...

Freckles 26 reviews Gene Stratton Porter
Norilana Books, 2006
Another Wonderful Vintage Romance I read this at an impressionable age and fell in love with stalwart Freckles and the Limberlost Swamp and his Angel. Pretty sentimental by today's standards, this book champions saving the forests and wetlands. The descriptions are beautiful and evocative. A great romance.

The Picture of Dorian Gray 2 reviews Oscar Wilde
Norilana Books, 2007
"Beauty is a form of Genius." Oscar Wilde was one of the foremost representatives of Aestheticism, a movement based on the notion that art exists for no other purpose than its existence itself ("l'art pour l'art"), not for the purpose of social and moral enlightenment. Born in Dublin and a graduate of Oxford's Magdalen College, he initially worked primarily as a journalist, editor and lecturer, but gradually turned to writing ...

Candide 135 reviews Voltaire
Norilana Books, 2006
All is for the best in this world Candide is an ambitious book. It should be an example for all `would-be' writers all over the world. It is not less than a frontal attack on the greatest philosopher of Voltaire's time, Leibniz, for whom the world he lived in was `the best possible'.
'Dear Pangloss (= know everything), when you were hanged, dissected, cruelly beaten, did you still think that everything was for the best in this ...

Quo Vadis 2 reviews Henryk Sienkiewicz
Norilana Books, 2006
A must-read, in Polish or in translation Probably one of the greatest books ever written in Polish. Makes one see why Sienkiewicz received a Nobel Prize in literature. Great story, set in 1st century Rome during the persecution of the first Christians. Its themes are timeless: finding good in the midst of evil, faith and the presence of God in dark times, true love versus lust. Beautifully written and compelling.

A Girl of the Limberlost 1 review Gene Stratton Porter
Norilana Books, 2006
So good my mom had to read it at the same time as me! I started reading this book right after I got it.
My mom had looked it over and was wanting to read it too, so we both took turns reading chapters. It was funny because when I was reading, my mom would keep asking when I would be done with that chapter. She did not like waiting in suspence and neither did I. I stayed up past 2:00 in the morning just reading away. By the next day, both my ...

The Egoist George Meredith
Norilana Books, 2007
The Egoist (1879) by George Meredith is a sophisticated, brilliantly written dissection of a self-absorbed young man of society and the very different women who fall within his sphere. In this comedy with serious overtones, Sir Willoughby -- a highly eligible bachelor, and the Egoist in question -- courts, proposes and loses brides repeatedly, and then wonders at his own inexplicable predicament. The answer might be encapsulated in the ...

North and South 2 reviews Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell
Norilana Books, 2007
North & South I first saw the DVD and than purchased the book. The DVD has become my favorite over Pride and Prejudice. The acting is superb and the story line, athough not quite accurate to the book, is very well told. The plot kept my interest throughout the 4 hours of viewing. I would recommend anyone who enjoys the English period pictures to watch this movie.

Consuelo: A Romance of Venice 2 reviews George Sand
Norilana Books, 2007
Magickal This book was the guiding compass in my teenage years - art, music, coming of age, love, honor, mystery. It is truly remarkable, gripping, mystical, deep, full of underlying human mythology. I think it will hold its grip on anyone regardless of age, however! Man or woman, child or older being. Enjoy, especially those who will travel its path for the first time! I am surprised there is no film ...

Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ Lew Wallace
Norilana Books, 2007
Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1880) by Lew Wallace is one of the most popular and beloved 19th century American novels. This faithful New Testament tale combines the events of the life of Jesus with grand historical spectacle in the exciting story of Judah of the House of Hur, a man who finds extraordinary redemption for himself and his family. A classic of faith, fortitude, and inspiration.

Miss Mackenzie 4 reviews Anthony Trollope
Norilana Books, 2008
Trollope's gentle satire wins through here. Anthony Trollope spends so much time doing the things that well-meaning creative writing profesors now tell one never to do--his editorial voice peppers each novel, he avoids subtle foreshadowing in favor of telling you essentially what will happen next, and he consistently drives plot towards a theme. Yet Trollope, a consummate Victorian, seems intrinsically modern whereas many more ...

A Hero of Our Time 48 reviews Mikhail Lermontov
Norilana Books, 2006
The influence of the superfluous man proves ultimately vast. Lermontov is a sleeper by which I mean that he is lesser known and read outside Russia than other immortals. This novel was recommended to me by a Russian friend from Georgia and I was delighted to find a germinal work influenced greatly by Pushkin and Lord Byron. I read Hero of Our Time after Pushkin's Eugene Onegin. Both Puskin and Lermontov were mad for Byron's poetry as he had earned a ...
