My husband is originally from San Francisco, so we visit frequently. We like to try new areas and return to favorites. Must-have for NY Trip!
This little book was absolutely invaluable during recent trip to NYC. Very well-organized, great details, great maps. Although we really were tourists, this book saved our bacon on more than one occasion as we were able to find needed items/locations with very little trouble. Bought as gift, LOVED IT!
I bought this gift for by boyfriend, since his parents moved to chicago and while he is not in college in CA he will be in chicago. He was so excited that i gave him it. At first i was looking into buying the Moleskin Chicago edition, but this is SOOOO much better. it has great maps and little blurbs about fun restaurants, museums, bookstores and more. Best LA book I've read!
I have read Lonely Planet books on Los Angeles, and these are great if you are a tourist and interested just in seeing the major tourist sites. But this book gives relevant information for familiarising yourself with LA generally and the 50+ neighborhoods that make it up. I just moved down to DC, and this book has been incredibly helpful. When I initially decided to move down, I purchased Mike Livingstone's Newcomer's Handbook, which was incredibly helpful, as it gave in-depth descriptions of the neighborhoods (an invaluable resource in deciding where to live), but the book lacked good maps to navigate by. Best guide for NYC- the only one you will need!
This book has saved my neck on more than one occasion. I use it daily to get around the city. It has everything you need. We liked it so much we bought an extra one for our guests when they come to visit- don't want to be parted from it. Never know when you will need to find a great restaurant in mid-town or look up the closest post office or bank or library.... Not to mention the great fold ...

I bought this book for one of my daughters because they are considering a move to that area. My other daughter and son-in-law live there now and they LIVE by this book. Great and useful book...
although the title may be slightly misleading. It should be called "Not For Tourists but also not for someone who's lived in the area for a long time." Chances are if you've been there for a while, you know the city. However this is a fantastic companion for anyone moving to the city who is unfamiliar with the neighborhoods and what they have to offer. I have NYC and Philly. The maps are on seperate pages, so it looks like you are reading a book (not consulting a map because you are lost). Highly condensed, good for reference for a couple months around a new city. Nice gift idea.
