The Fall of an Empire
There she was: perched at the top of the jungle gym, stocky, about Zoe's age, short auburn hair stuck up all over the place on purpose, olive green cargo shorts, black tank top, a cigarette pinched between her first and second fingers like a joint, bare feet dangling over the edge, a pair of skater shoes and a puddle of butts on the ground under her. The Beckoners, written by Carrie Mac, is about ...

Horrifying, eye opening account of the witch hunts
Carol Matas, best known for the "Of Two Minds" novels and her various Holocaust fictions, has created a shocking novella about two women who find themselves trapped in a witch hunt in Renaissance France. Suzanne Rives, a beautiful and fiercely independent widow and skilled midwife, refuses advances from two men to live with her daughter, the main character Rose. People have already been ...

What a woman!
This woman has done things I have always dreamed of doing - building my own log cabin out in the wilderness. Her descriptions of her life during that time is wonderful and I just wish I could have been there too - to help her and learn from her. I loved the book.

A fantastic historical fiction
This is one of my favourite historical fictions. Nickel is always detailed in her historical fictions such as The Nine Days Queen. Nannerl's dreams and sibling underappreciation is realistic. I enjoyed the historical details in the dreams and the occasional use of german. To top it off, further reading on the Mozart family, Nickel includes a Bibliography with good ressources. Inspiring for the ...

A book that makes me look forward to story time.
This is a book that my 5 year old son and I both love and we revisit it over and over again. I usually let him choose the 2 books I'll read before bed and this book is chosen many times. The story is engaging for him and me, the illustrations have a surreal quality that make you feel like you've been there. There is even the lesson about working hard, teamwork, and not underestimating anyone. ...

Good
When the War Is Over is a good book, and it is by Martha Attema. Well, it is one of my favorites. The story takes place in the years of World War II. It is about this teenager named Janke, and she lives in Netherlands. Janke works for the resistance, and one day she bumps into a German soldier named Helmut. Soon, she finds out that he isn't the average Nazi. Sparks actually fly between them, but ...

Perfect Man, perfect story!!
"Michael Maxwell McAllum was the smallest boy in his class. He lived in a small house in a small town on a small street." So begins Wilson and Griffiths' delightful story, "Perfect Man." Michael's all time most-favoritest superhero is the blue-caped, silver-helmeted Perfect Man. He's a hero of mystery, no one knows his true name, no one even knows where he lives, but he's got marketing on ...

Excellent story about young teen's coping with mom's suicide
The main character is very real, a junior high girl coping with the suicide of her mother. She has a normal circle of peers, who can be supportive or just plain mean. Dad is starting to date which creates another set of challenges. Excellent story - think our Girls' Book Club will love it.

Magical, mystery tour
Adrien is a wonderful heroine. She is both loyal and willing to stand up for herself even when those trying to lead her down a dangerous path are older. At the same time, her near-death experience with a brain aneurysm makes her cynical and antisocial. She deserves the nickname "Grouch". Adrien meets Paul, another camp staffer whose intensity keeps others away. The relationship that ...

An adorable book - sweet story and lovely illustrations
I gave this book about our connection with animals as a gift to a friend's twins last week. It seems I should have bought 2 copies! They are enchanted, and require it's being read over and over again. The best news: my friend has not tired of it after dozens of readings. This lovely rhyming book seems destined to become a beloved early-childhood companion.

Poetic, scientific, artistic, and graceful.
Awesome for anyone - adult or child - who has ever found a moonsnail shell, or gone beachcombing in the Pacific Northwest. Poetic daydreaming meets real scientific information in an unusual way. I own lots of adult beach books, but this book is how I identified my moonsnail eggcases.

Beautiful and Moving
I bought this book because I am a fan of David Bouchard's book "If You're Not From the Prairie." I cried when I read "If Sarah Will Take Me." This is a book that doesn't fit easliy into a category. It is poetry, more in the adult category with the appearance of a children's book. I have made many people read this book and they agree that it is something special. It would make a wonderful ...

What a wonderful book! My kids absolutely loved it, and I have to say I'm quite partial to it myself. This is the A-Z story of Dennis the Dragon, and his quest to find his flame and return to Castle Yarrow as a full-grown, fire-breathing dragon. From "Avoid aunties armed with arrows" to "As Auntie always says, 'Zoom with Zest!'," this is an alphabet-filled picture book with amazing ...

The title will make you laugh, the story will provoke you to think. Dylan lives the good life: great family, amazing boyfriend, and a best friend she can rely on. That is until she confronts her real identity, when she admits to herself that she prefers girls rather than boys. Beth Goobie, in a stellar effort, portrays the life of a lesbian teenager too afraid of the repercussions upon her ...

After Dime's older brother is relegated to a wheelchair as a parapalegic after a car accident, Darren's situation seems to hit his sister harder than in hits him. Dime, a motocycle enthusiasist with a dyed pink Mohawk, acts out in a attempt to live loud and fast instead of trying to live up to her good brother's reputation. When things get too tense at home, their parents allow Dime to accept ...

A suspense filled thriller that is sure to please.
As an elementary teacher I found this book to be a great motivator for my Grade Six students. I found the content to be very enticing for this age level without the "gore" that is present in other books of this genre. Slade does an excellent job of filling all chapters with suspense and encouraging the reader to forge on into the story. An excellent classroom resource to excite readers ...

A DREAM OF ISLANDS
This book is about a dream--a dream born of early manhood on a coastal headland in British Columbia. It is a reverie of pottering in a small sailboat to and among the numerous islands off the Victorian seaboard. The story begins with the author's discovery of the Caprice design and his construction of his boat from a bare fiberglass hull. Most of the book, however, is a series of vignettes of ...
