The best
I'm a little biased because i am in the book. but it really is something i pick up at least once a week and page through. pops off the shelf. Mike did an awesome job curating this book and all of us in it, owe him many thanks. plus, the title is simply classic.

Thinking with Type: A Critical Guide for Designers, Writers, Editors, & Students (Design Briefs)47 reviews
Ellen Lupton

Princeton Architectural Press, 2004

A solid book for type - with a twinge of humor
I like this book a great deal. The next time I have a chance to use this in a class (to teach) I will. There are lots of good examples, the language is clear, and it's not too ethereal or esoteric. I think it's a great introduction to typography and laid out very well.

Ellen Lupton, Phillips Jennifer Cole

Princeton Architectural Press, 2008

excellent for learning!
this is the book i've always wanted to share with beginning graphic design students: a clear, articulated description of design principles for postmodern students. it defends enduring principles from the bauhaus, and introduces new ways of thinking about gd basics as transferrable skills.

Letter by Letter
Laurent Pflughaupt

Princeton Architectural Press, 2008

Letters are the building blocks of our language, and quite possibly of our consciousness. Written into young minds through constant repetition letters soon function like water in a fishbowl—essential for life, but too familiar to qualify as objects of serious inquiry. But considered separately from words and sentences, letters express their own mysterious beauty. In order to uncover their secrets, it is necessary to forego the conventional ...

How To Be a Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul16 reviews
Adrian Shaughnessy

Princeton Architectural Press, 2005

Amazing, But Looking For a Bit More
Amazing book - a great read for any individual who is thinking of defining their place in the Graphic Arts world. You can seriously learn something new or reaffirming from it every time you pick it up. - Don't look for solid examples of what steps to follow, the overview is good, but it being told by somebody who has been in the industry for years and never appeared to have any major struggles ...

Transmaterial 2: A Catalog of Materials That Redefine Our Physical Environment1 review
Blaine Brownell

Princeton Architectural Press, 2008

Highly Recommended
Cannot recommend this book highly enough - it does a great job of finding cool, interesting, ground breaking materials and then providing information on how to source them. A must-have reference for any designer, interior designer or architect who prides themselves on staying abreast of cutting-edge materials. (And since materials are the palette of the designer this book will go a long way to ...

The Book as Art: Artists' Books from the National Museum of Women in the Arts6 reviews
Krystyna Wasserman, Johanna Drucker, ...

Princeton Architectural Press, 2006

Gorgeous and Inspiring
If you are looking for inspirational, high quality photographs of some of the best fine art bookwork out there, this is for you. A few of the artists' books featured in here are also illustrated in other books, but the quality of the photographic reproductions here is so top notch that even though I'd seen some of the work before, it didn't matter all that much. The reproductions are fresh and ...

Grid Systems: Principles of Organizing Type (Design Briefs)16 reviews
Kimberly Elam

Princeton Architectural Press, 2004

Great for Computer Geeks Too!
I am a web designer and a someone who appreciates good print design. A lot of books on CSS (cascading style sheets) try to explain the concept of grids, but these are usually written by people that have a great grasp of the tech side of things, but their writing skills, or ability to relate these concepts are limited. This book doesn't mention web design (so far as I've read), but she ...

Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis: Opportunistic Architecture2 reviews
Paul Lewis, Marc Tsurumaki, ...

Princeton Architectural Press, 2007

LTL - monograph you need if you like their work!
Lewis Tsurumaki Lewis continue to go from strength to strength as they progress from unbuilt theory and competition entries to built work. I envied them in school, and I appreciate them now I'm working as an Architect. This monograph is a perfect follow up to the Pamphlet Architecture "Situation Normal". Some of the work is re-presented here but 90% of it is fresh and new. If you ever wanted to ...

Tom Kundig: Houses2 reviews
Dung Ngo

Princeton Architectural Press, 2006

A breath of fresh air
In a world of inflated egos and misplaced priorities, Tom Kundig rushes in with a clear view, a warm heart and an undisputable eye for beauty. His whimsical but exact and gorgeuos designs display a playfulness that catagorizes a true professional who does not "take himself too seriously" and works to infuse joy in his client's life. I had the same exhuberant reaction to his work that I had the ...

Materials for Design5 reviews
Victoria Ballard Bell, Patrick Rand

Princeton Architectural Press, 2006

Design magicians reveal their material tricks
If you've seen beautiful design and wanted to know how it was actually made, this is the book to show you. The case studies are the best of recent work and each has clear concepts, many color shots and ALSO clear construction drawings and details which are impossible to find. Some books only tease with images but not explanations, and technical manuals miss the beauty of design altogether. This ...

Atlas of Novel Tectonics6 reviews
Jesse Reiser

Princeton Architectural Press, 2006

a rare exemplar of clarity in architectural writing
Reiser and Umemoto (henceforth R&U) have put together a wonderful role model of a textbook in a field that erroneously prides itself on having NO textbooks -- that is, by having far too many "must-read" books that remain disconnected and often irrelevant to the problem of learning HOW TO GO ABOUT wrapping one's head around this thing called Architecture. Without turgidity, mysticism, pedantry, or ...

D.I.Y.: Kids3 reviews
Ellen Lupton, Julia Lupton

Princeton Architectural Press, 2007

Artist view
I think that writing this book with my mom was really interesting. Everyone will enjoy doing crafts with their family. There so many ideas in this book. My favorite projects were making stuffed animals and mod-podge purses. The stuffies are cute and cuddly and there's room for one in everybody's heart. The purses are very stylish and unique. This book is wonderful and you should definitely buy it.

A Year of Mornings: 3191 Miles Apart
Maria Alexandra Vettese, Stephanie Congdon Barnes

Princeton Architectural Press, 2008

The morning hours before the hustle and bustle of the day commences is the perfect time to pause and enjoy a sense of renewal and vitality. On the morning of December 7, 2006, Maria Alexandra Vettese and Stephanie Congdon Barnes each took a digital photo of everyday objects randomly arranged on their kitchen tables and, unbeknownst to one another, uploaded them to the website Flickr. "A Year of Mornings" collects 236 images – always ...
