Anno's Mysterious Multiplying Jar12 reviews
Mitsumasa Anno

Putnam Juvenile, 1999

A lovely book on counting and factorials
This picture book is easy to read, and presents two math concepts: the first is counting to ten. The second is factorials: If there are three kingdoms in two countries on one island, then how many kingdoms are there altogether? Imagining some of the silly scenes (there are how many cupboards in how many rooms?) is a delight. This book -- or at least the last half of it -- is best for ...

Where's Spot? (Little Spot Board Books)24 reviews

Putnam Juvenile, 2003

my baby's favorite
This has been my 10 month old baby's favorite book for the past 2-3 months ever since he could use his hands and fingers to flip the pages. We read it to him a few times and then we noticed him making sounds in the same tones as we did when we would flip open something in the book. I would definitely recommend it

A Mother for Choco (Paperstar)67 reviews
Keiko Kasza

Putnam Juvenile, 1996

A mother for Choco; a story for my daughter
I absolutely adore this book. My sister gave it to us before we traveled to China to adopt our daughter. She's just over two now and has read this book with me dozens of times. We both love the illustrations, and even at a very young age, she "gets" the idea that Choco finds a mother in Mrs. Bear, regardless of the fact that they look nothing alike. (I confess I still get misty every time I read ...

Shh! We're Writing the Constitution8 reviews
Jean Fritz

Putnam Juvenile, 1997

The story of the Constitution Convention for young readers
The point of Jean Fritz's "Shh! We're Writing the Constitution" is that contrary to popular opinion, America had to be dragged kicking and screaming into becoming a new nation. While it is true that Americans were happy to be independent of Great Britain, the colonies that were now states had become used to being sovereign and many of them wanted to keep it that way. Illustrated by Tomie de ...

Eats, Shoots & Leaves: Why, Commas Really Do Make a Difference!38 reviews
Lynne Truss

Putnam Juvenile, 2006

Great book for children of many ages
I ordered this book thinking it might be too young for my 9-year-old daughter. However, when it arrived it was pored over by not only my 9-year-old, but her 13-year-old brother as well. The copy I sent to my sister's children (ages 5 and 7) was also well-received. I recommend this book as a fun tool to teach and to re-enforce proper comma usage. It is a subtle and pain-free way to ...

Good Night, Gorilla164 reviews
Peggy Rathmann

Putnam Juvenile, 1996

Perfect Book for Bedtime
Goodnight Gorilla is a perfect bedtime book or for those young children just learning to read. The book has colorful illustrations and repetitive phrases that make it easy for young ones to understand and follow along. Goodnight Gorilla follows a zoo keeper as he says goodnight to all the animals. The gorilla swipes his keys and lets all the animals out, which of course, follow the zoo keeper ...

The Five Chinese Brothers (Paperstar)64 reviews
Claire Huchet Bishop

Putnam Juvenile, 1996

Great book of the times; beware liberal ideology who insist racism
Keep in mind, this is an old Chinese tale, not somehow a racist American interpretation of Chinese culture like some reviewers here try to make it out to be. I read this book in the 1980s when I was just a few years old. It was my favorite book. It was simple, easily readable, the pictures were funny, etc. I not once viewed the book as racist, or ethocentric, or God knows any other names ...

Twenty-Odd Ducks: Why, every punctuation mark counts!
Lynne Truss

Putnam Juvenile, 2008

Commas and apostrophes aren’t the only punctuation marks that can cause big trouble if they’re put in the wrong place. Now, Truss and Timmons put hyphens, parentheses, quotation marks, periods, and more in the spotlight, showing how which marks you choose and where you put them can cause hilarious mix-ups.

The Girl's Like Spaghetti: Why, You Can't Manage without Apostrophes!8 reviews
Lynne Truss

Putnam Juvenile, 2007

The Girl's Like Spaghetti is great!
I ordered this book to use in my 6th grade classroom. The pictures show the meaning of similar sentences with and without apostrophes. Using this book brings humor to reinforcing correct punctuation in writing for students and adults alike. The book includes the rules used to know when and where to use apostrophes. This is truly a fun way to learn punctuation.

The Boy of the Painted Cave23 reviews
Justen Denzel

Putnam Juvenile, 1996

Realistic Great Book!!!!
My class is using this book to learn about cavemen and it is a great book. The author learned about cavemen before he wrote the story so most of the things written in the book are based on something that actually happened. It is a great adventure and mystery book so you should read it. Also, you learn about what cavemen did. You find out what they do, what they wore, and their beliefs. Read it soon!

Great book, understandable and applicable
As an English teacher, I was looking for a good nonfiction book to assign to my 10th grade students. I'm very happy I found this book! The Bee Tree11 reviews
Patricia Polacco

Putnam Juvenile, 1998

A Sweet and Savory Story by One of the Very Best
"The Bee Tree" is another of Patricia Polacco's superb explorations of intergenerational friendship, and the significance of culture and tradition. Her expressive, folksy, slightly loopy style are all her own, and she has long been one of my favorite illustrators. Here, the warm, homey pictures just draw you into the story, and suffuse it with the familiarity of a family heirloom. That's part ...

Thunder Cake20 reviews
Patricia Polacco

Putnam Juvenile, 1997

Thunder Cake
This is a wonderful book ! My grandaughter's teacher had the kids read it in class. I made a thunder cake and took it in for the class when they were done. The receipe is in the back of the book. They loved it and it was a lot of fun. Also, a good book for children afraid of thunder storms. I highly recommend it.
