The Cat in the Hat 175 reviews Dr. Seuss
Random House Children's Books, 1997
The book that influenced our culture! Times have changed. Little kids left home alone and shouldn't they have been told by their parents not to let anyone in?
This is the book that must of led to a lot of wild house parties and may have spawned many party while your parents are away flicks (Risky Business, etc).
A good fun read with a lilting cadence!

Velveteen Rabbit-Pkg 101 reviews Margery Williams
Random House Children's Books, 1985
"Restored by that Refining Fire" "The Velveteen Rabbit" is a parable, a story about that refining fire: redemptive love. The Velveteen Rabbit gave himself in love to the little boy. In return, the little boy loved the rabbit completely. This love caused the rabbit to begin to look around and question what was real. In questioning what was real, the rabbit ultimately believes himself real and wishes himself real. Once real, ...

Story of Babar 32 reviews Jean De Brunoff
Random House Children's Books, 1991
children love the drawings My 3 1/2 year old son loves this book. It's quite a long story and takes about 10 to 15 minutes. I actually never "read" the story to him, I tell the story in my own words, also because at one point, the mother of Barbar is shot my hunters. I tell my son, that Barbar's mother tripped and Barbar took the opportunity to run away. The rest of the book is marvellous and seems to touch children's ...

Mr. Popper's Penguins 129 reviews Richard; Atwater, Florence Atwater
Random House Children's Books, 1978
Our first successful read-aloud I had tried many different books from Black Beauty to Little Britches to enrich our homeschool literature time.
No joy. Of course, to be fair, it's worth mentioning that my children are still all 6 and younger (all five of them!)
When we did a thematic unit study on penguins, I came across this book in our local homeschool store, and it was a HIT! They all begged me to read "just one more ...

Junie B., First Grader Boss of Lunch (Junie B. Jones) 20 reviews Barbara Park
Random House Children's Books, 2003
Review from my six year old daughter This book was interesting. At the beginning she talked all about her lunch box, and she bragged about it too. I liked this book because it was funny. The words were not to hard for me to read.
I think lots of first graders should read this book.

Buffalo Before Breakfast 15 reviews Mary Pope Osborne
Random House Australia Children's Books, 2004
School Book Review Would you ever want to be chased by a big buffalo? I read a book about two kids that did. It is called Buffalo Before Breakfast by Mary Pope Osborne. This book is about a boy named Jack, a girl named Annie and a dog named Teddy. They travel back in time. This story is also about the buffalo and Native Americans. This is a really cool book. One of my favorite parts is when they saw a huge ...

Green Eggs and Ham (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books) 220 reviews Dr. Seuss
Random House Children's Books
The Greatest American Philosopher As a mom of a 24 and an 8 year old (I know . . . big surprise) I am firmly of the opinion that Dr. Seuss is the greatest American philosopher! In this book he urges us to try things that we may be afraid of or even repelled by. Many folks think this book applies only to food but I think he is urging us to be more brave in all avenues of life. We need to listen to those around us urging us ...

Are You My Mother? 98 reviews P. D. Eastman
Random House Children's Books, 2001
Great beginner "MaMa Book" This is the one of my 19 month's old favorite book. He will point to it and say "Mama Book" and will sit still listening to me reading this book from the beginning to the end. He loves the pictures and Snort looks like Jack (from the Thomas the tank engine) so he is very happy to see Snort. This is an excellent book to introduce a toddler to reading.

Lioness Rampant 177 reviews Tamora Pierce
Random House Children's Books, 1997
Reader...Then a Teacher This review is more for the entire "Lioness Quartet" quadrilogy, rather than this final installment in the series.
I was introduced to this series as a young girl of 11 or 12. They remained my favorite books for over a decade. The Lioness Quartet combines both magical, imaginative story telling with a strong feminist message. Equality is a powerful underlying theme in this series.

Lyra's Oxford 88 reviews Philip Pullman
Random House Children's Books, 2003
Really charming after "His Dark Materials" After seeing "The Golden Compass," I had to read the trilogy "His Dark Materials." It was a thrilling fantasy that left me thirsting for more, but--guess what?--that is all there is right now. But there was this little jewel of a book. It really is just a short story/chapter and a charming map of Oxford, but it was what I needed to decompress and wait patiently for "The Book of Dust."

Bud Not Buddy 463 reviews Christopher Paul Curtis
Random House Children's Books, 1999
Yay for Bud! Welcome to the world of the heyday of jazz. The year is 1936, and the world is open to a young orphan who has happened to find himself on the run.
Curtis writes with zesty personality for Bud and paints a portrait of a very likeable young boy who simply wants what all of us want: a family. He's a great kid with plenty of sass who is ready to take on the world and do what he needs to do to find ...

Pumpkin Moonshine 8 reviews Tasha Tudor
Random House Children's Books, 1978
Pumpkin Moonshine - 60 years later! If you've never carved a "Pumpkin Moonshine" you've missed a wonderful part of Halloween. As a little girl, Tasha Tudors delightful story was a favorite of mine. My children grew up carving pumpkins, not into jack-o-lanterns, but into Pumpkin Moonshines. The "grands" now enjoy grandmothers love for the season and the wonderful "Pumpkin Moonshine" with the re-release of this beautiful little book ...

Top-Secret Personal Beeswax: A Journal by Junie B. (and Me!) 23 reviews Barbara Park
Random House Children's Books
Fun for Junie B. fans This is a neat book. Your Junie B. fan can read jounal entries that Junie B. has written about herself, which are very entertaining. Then, there is a space for her to write her own entry on the same topic that Junie B. just wrote. There are some places to draw and others that you just write. My 7 year old got this for Christmas and the first time she picked it up, she worked on it for more ...

Junie B., First Grader (at Last!) (Junie B. Jones) 47 reviews Barbara Park
Random House Children's Books, 2002
Junie B. Is A Hit With My Three! Our children love all the Junie B. books. The Junie B., First Grader (At Last!) was a hit with all of them. Our son related to the story because both he and Junie B. were First Graders - At last! at the same time.
His two sisters have also enjoyed the world of Miss Junie B. and I know you will too! It is an added bonus when both brother and sisters share an enjoyment in reading the same books.

Dragonlance Chronicles : Volume 2 Dragons of Winter Night 257 reviews Margaret; Hickman, Tracy Weis
Random House Children's Books, 1985
Excellent Series As a fantasy genre lover, these books were really good. They were well written and the authors did a good job in developing the characters, which is not often seen done well. I was hooked from the very beginning and read all 3 in about a week. I am now onto the Legends trilogy. I hope it lives up to the standard set in Dragonlance. I highly recommend this series!
