In Control: A Skill-Building Program for Teaching Young Adolescents to Manage Anger 1 review Millicent H. Kellner
Research Press (IL), 2001
It really does work... I have had the opportunity to use the program with two groups of young adolescents, and have found the manual an excellent guide to both discussion and follow-up "homework" activities. The "Log" has been especially well received by both kids and parents. I have used it in a private practice setting, and would imagine that it would be just as useful in an institutional setting. I recommend the ...

A Couple's Guide to Communication 5 reviews John Mordechai Gottman
Research Press (IL), 1979
Great for one and all This book was recommended for me to read by my Sociology Professor instead of John Gray's work, Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus, and I love it! I've delved a little into both texts and enjoy Gottman's work better since its suggestions are backed by years of clinical research on how thousands of couples communicate and presents the strategies that worked best for them, where Gray's ...

Increasing Behaviors of Severely Retarded and Autistic Persons 1 review Richard M. Foxx
Research Press (IL), 1982
Behavioral Modification program This is the grandfather of all behavioral modification information, although it is long out of date. Foxx's information works whether or not you are using it in the area of teaching the DD client; it works with dogs, cats and chinchillas as well as people because its principles are universal. I recommend it for anyone who needs to understand how to train using positive reinforcment ...

The Prepare Curriculum: Teaching Prosocial Competencies 4 reviews Arnold P. Goldstein
Research Press (IL), 1999
A Great Book for School Social Workers My supervisor lent me this book and it has been a great help! It has practical ideas that require little or no preparation (both for individual and group work). It has been helpful with elementary through high school students. Well worth the money!

Grief, Dying, and Death: Clinical Interventions for Caregivers 3 reviews Therese A. Rando
Research Press (IL), 1984
"Grief, Dying, and Death: Clinical Interventions for Caregivers" by Theresa A. Rando I find Theresa Rando's book very timely and interesting. That's as a caregiver in a hospital setup it just become apparent that you can only help people grieving by first getting in touch with your own visceral feelings. And that's where she started it. Thus until one permits herself or himself to feel what is normal and natural of grief situation it becomes a mirage to be able to help others.

Decreasing Behaviors of Persons With Severe Retardation and Autism 2 reviews Richard M. Foxx
Research Press (IL), 1982
Set to get started understanding ABA Richard Foxx's two volume set, Increasing and Decreasing Behaviors... was one of my first introductions to Applied Behavior Analysis, and I still come back to them often. They are written in an easy to read and understandable style. The author is one of the best there is in this field, and it shows in his writing. He knows his subject matter, and he knows how to teach it. Keep this set ...

Skillstreaming the Elementary School Child: Student Manual 4 reviews Ellen McGinnis
Research Press (IL), 1997
Sound theory and clear explanations for the school worker. I think this book, an update of the original which I have also read, gives clear and precise instructions for creating prosocial behavior groups and interventions. The principles behind the model espoused in this book are sound and effective. In the short time I have used this model in my groups, I have seen some slight but noticeable behavior changes in the students.

Parental Loss of a Child 1 review Therese A. Rando
Research Press (IL), 1986
Finally Understanding This book was obviously written for the professional dealing with people who have lost a child; however, as a parent who has lost a child, I have found the book to be very helpful. Most of what is on the market for parents in my situation are antedotal and not useful for "self help". This book is an exception to that. It offers the results of surveys and clinical studies of what is "normal" ...

Some applied merit I have given this book several reads. It has some merit in application. However, the book has little substance. It is organized well and this helps to make the book seem it has more to offer than it does.
