Bad Kitty28 reviews
Nick Bruel

Roaring Brook Press, 2005

Humorous learning book
I loved "Bad Kitty". One reason is it teaches children who are about to go to kindergarten their alphabet in a most creative and humorous way. Not only can they learn their letters but they can learn to read in a funny way. The pictures depict the words perfectly. Adults such as old granny women can enjoy the humor in these books. And, you know we are the ones who frequently read these books ...

Who Is Melvin Bubble?9 reviews
Nick Bruel

Roaring Brook Press, 2006

5 & 6 Year Old Boy's Delight
My son and daughter, 6 and 4, really love the way this book wraps up at the end...there are lots of funny things that you don't fully understand until you get to the end, and it really is very sweet how it all ties together. We've given it to several 5 and 6 year old boys for birthday gifts and they've all gone out of their way to tell us how much they like it. Great fun to read for both grown ...

Ignite the imagination of the kid in your life!
There's tons of family fun to be created with this wonderful collection of clever questions designed to spark endless and fascinating communication in the car, at the dinner table, or anywhere families want to have fun. This book ...

Bad Kitty Gets a Bath (Bad Kitty)1 review
Nick Bruel

Roaring Brook Press, 2008

This is a CHAPTER Book
Although I truly loathe the idea of reviewing my own book, I just want it to be perfectly clear to anyone before they purchase this book that "BAD KITTY GETS A BATH" is NOT a picture book like the original "Bad Kitty" or "Poor Puppy," but is a CHAPTER book. For reasons unknown to me, the Amazon product description above does not clearly spell this out, so I thought I would do it myself. I ...

The Man Who Walked Between The Towers48 reviews
Mordicai Gerstein

Roaring Brook Press, 2003

The Hire Wire Act Over the World Trade Center
This is a wonderful story of Philippe Petit and his walk between the Twin Tower of the World Trade Center. It is done in a very moving way and the story is truly touching. I can't believe he did it! Since the towers are no more, the story is even more eloquent.

Zoo - ology5 reviews
Joelle Jolivet

Roaring Brook Press, 2003

Zoo-ology is a real winner!
This larger than life book appeals to children because of it's very large size. The art work is outstanding and because there is very little written word except the name of all the animals it lends itself to discussion. My 2-1/2 year old grandson Gavin loves it. Also on every page is a chameleon who changes to be like the animals on the page, so finding him is another adventure for young folks. ...

Dog and Bear (Neal Porter Books) (Boston Globe-Horn Book Award Winner-Best Picture Book) (Awards))9 reviews
Laura Vaccaro Seeger

Roaring Brook Press, 2007

So cute!
I read this to my kindergarten and first grade classes and they all made me read it to them again! Of course, you have to give Dog and Bear their own funny voices! :) I love this book. The illustrations are adorable--they remind me of my own doxie.

First the Egg (Caldecott Honor Book and Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book (Awards))7 reviews
Laura Vaccaro Seeger

Roaring Brook Press, 2007

A concept journey: egg or chicken? chicken or egg?
Which came first--the chicken or the egg? Finally, someone is here to tell us. But the answer later. "First the egg," written and illustrated by Laura Vaccaro Seeger, is a Caldecott honor winner for 2008 and an honor book for the Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss) Award. What makes it special? Both the artwork and the story, or actually, in this case, concepts that lead from one transformation ...

ABC3D
Marion Bataille

Roaring Brook Press, 2008

"One of the most delightful and innovative pop-up books I have ever seen."--Robert Sabuda Prepare to be amazed. From the lenticular cover that changes with the angle of your hands all the way to the Z, ABC3D is as much a work of art as it is a pop-up book. Each of the 26 three-dimensional letters move and change before your eyes. C turns into D with a snap. M stands at attention. X becomes Y with a flick of the wrist. And then there's ...

Poor Puppy11 reviews
Nick Bruel

Roaring Brook Press, 2007

From J. Kaye's Book Blog
From a parent's point of view, this is a multipurpose book. I love the repetitive words such as "poor", "puppy", and "kitty". The just learning readers can see those and remember. This book also lists numbers and highlights letters which parents can point out for children to read. In Kitty's dreams, your child can travel around the world. The pictures will give children an insight into ...

Black? White! Day? Night! - A Book of Opposites (Ala Notable Children's Books (Awards)) (Neal Porter Books)7 reviews
Laura Vaccaro Seeger

Roaring Brook Press, 2006

Deceptively simple/delightfully surprising
Seeger's work looks deceptively simple but is more often than not quite surprising. Black White Day Night is another lift-the-flap book of opposites that lives up to her other lift-the-flap projects: The Hidden Alphabet and Lemons are Not Red. Her bright and unfussy illustrations appeal to children and the cleverness of her designs will appeal to adults. I always find myself genuinely ...

Good Morning China2 reviews
Hu Yong Yi

Roaring Brook Press, 2007

What do men, women & children do in early morning in China?! You might be surprised...
This is a wonderful wonderful book to see how China's people "celebrate" their mornings with activities in the park. I don't want to give it away, but how GREAT! We visited China twice in adopting children, and visits to the park in early morning were an incomparable highlight. I have a hand-compiled version of this book that had been offered (no longer) via Half the Sky from this author/artist. ...

Almost Everything3 reviews

Roaring Brook Press, 2005

high quality printed art for all ages
This is an astonishingly high quality printed art book in brilliant colors, at an inexplicably low price. A mix of retro, arts & crafts, stylized pictures in great colors. We bought one to cut out the pictures and make collages out of them. Does anyone know about this artist's background?

Dinosaur Trouble
Dick King-Smith

Roaring Brook Press, 2008

SOMETIMES THE MOST UNLIKELY PAIRS MAKE THE BEST OF FRIENDS. A hilarious prehistoric yarn for newly-independent readers from a master of children's animal stories. All pterodactyls know that flying dinosaurs are superior, and all apatosauruses know that any dinosaur with only two legs is surely second-class. Nosy, a pterodactyl, and Banty, an apatosaurus, become great friends even though their parents have forbidden them to play together. With ...

Julia Golding

Roaring Brook Press, 2008

Absolutely lovely book set in old London
Adolescent orphan Catherine Royal lives backstage the Royal Theatre in old 18th century London. One night she hears of a diamond hidden inside the theatre, and from there the whole story unravels. She befriends an African boy and two kids of higher class than herself whilst she still hang around trying to become member of one of Londons many gangs. I can't give this book any fair review as ...

The Adventures of Polo8 reviews

Roaring Brook Press, 2006

Great for a child's to imagine
This is a wonderful book for kids of all ages. My three year old just loves Polo. This book has no words/text but the pictures just captivate my son and he can just sit there flipping page after page. It is wonderfully drawn and allows a child's imagination to run. We have sat down together and made up the dialogue at time and plan to do the same with Regis Faller's other Polo books.

1650 England, a young woman wakens in darkness 'curled on her side like a wood louse'. She believes she's in Hell. The doctors believe the woman yet lives. The Puritans claim her soul for God. The doctors apply all the ...

UNBEATABLE TEAM--MAYBE. UNBEATABLE READING--FOR SURE! The first novel in Betty Hick's Gym Shorts series is a slam-dunk for newly-independent readers. But without team t-shirts or an official name can they take on The Tigers, a team that plays at the huge YWCA and has a player old enough to shave? My Friend Rabbit33 reviews

Roaring Brook Press, 2002

beautiful illustrations!
my 19 month old daughter loves the drawings in this...there are very few words but she gets the story from the drawings...similar set up like "good night gorilla" in terms of the pictures telling more of story than the actual words
