Midnight on the Moon (Magic Tree House) 29 reviews Mary Pope Osborne
Scholastic Young Hippo, 2000
My four year old loves them My four year old son is in love with this chapter series! A friend suggested it to us since he seemed ready for a more advanced reading material at bedtime. My husband reads him a chapter every night...sometimes more because they don't want to stop. It's become a great tradition for them, and something they both look forward to. We love that there are so many in the collection! Start with number ...

Pirates Past Noon (Magic Tree House) 23 reviews Mary Pope Osborne
Scholastic Young Hippo, 2000
MY BOY LOVES READING IT My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

No, David! 165 reviews David Shannon
Scholastic Hippo, 2006
I must be David's mother! I bought this book a few years ago, when I had two sons. Now that I have three sons, I find that when I read this book I should have written a book just like it about my third son. I'm always telling him no just as David's mother did to him.
David Shannon is a brilliant artist and author. Just with his simple words-No, David!- and his simple pictures, he created a world that every child can ...

Numbers, the Key to the Universe (Murderous Maths) 2 reviews Kjartan Poskitt
Scholastic Hippo, 2002
Great book! I ordered this and another from the UK after hearing about it from some homeschooling groups. These books are an excellent way to teach math skills in a fun way. My kids love flipping through the pages to find new "tricks" without even realizing they are learning math.
I'd highly recommend this to anyone who wants to keep their children interested in learning math without constant drilling ...

Dinosaurs Before Dark (Magic Tree House) 76 reviews Mary Pope Osborne
Scholastic Young Hippo, 2000
Dinosaurs Before Dark My sister gave my five year old daughter the first four books of the Magic Tree House series. We read the first book "Dinosaurs Before Dark" last night together and loved it. While some of the reviews are written negatively, referring to the simplicity of the story and lack of depth of the characters and the plot, I feel the simplicity is what makes it popular with the target age group. My ...

Nate the Great (Streamers) 17 reviews Marjorie Weinman Sharmat
Scholastic Young Hippo, 1989
Wonderfully Funny! I never did read any Nate the Great growing up...and what a shame. It's amazing that Sharmat can do so very much in terms of story and humor with so few words. It's great for beginner readers and uproariously funny as a read aloud story (especially if you can do the P.I. voice-over effect). This initial installment (I believe there are over 20 in this series) finds Nate the Great on hire for his ...

Space, Stars and Slimy Aliens (Horrible Science) 1 review Nick Arnold
Scholastic Hippo, 2003
Horrible Science series What a great idea! really good scholastic books disguised as fun stories; otherwise reluctant kids read them with great enjoyment, and learn in the process. Everything in these books is real science delivered in the best way to get a young child interestd. My 11 year old boy has been reading this series since he was 9 and he devours each book as soon as I buy them for him. Check out the Horrible ...

David Goes to School 45 reviews David Shannon
Scholastic Hippo, 2005
Wonderful Book!!! This storybook is great for grades K-3rd. This story teaches the good and bad side of things especially in a school setting. This book is geared towards first time school goers who are learning good behaviors in school. With minimal lines, Shannon shows excitement, sorrow, and anxiety in David's emotions that is familiar in all children. The wonderful and wacky illustrations are drawn from a ...

Cruel Crimes and Painful Punishments (Horrible Histories) 1 review Terry Deary
Scholastic Hippo, 2002
Cruel but a Fascinating and Entertaining Read This sometimes picture sometimes comic book format takes the reader into history's violent criminal past of both the criminals and the legal system. Unfair punishments for criminals and school children for petty crimes are examined and ridiculed as are societies in history such as those who burnt women alive or through them tied into the rivers to prove they were or weren't witches. The format ...

Learning adventures make reading fun The purpose of these little books
Is to encourage reading
And judging from the ones I've seen
They seem to be succeeding
A tree house filled with many books
That's like a time machine
To travel to another place
Just wish, and choose a scene
This third book's set upon the Nile
Inside a royal tomb
Two children help a Queen to find
Her book with spells of doom
Hieroglyphs and ...

Will Jack and Annie survive in the Amazon?
In the book Afternoon in the Amazon, Jack and Annie set off on a trip to the Amazon and try to find a rare fruit.
My favorite part of this story is when Peanut helps Jack and Annie get to the tree house.
The author's purpose is to tell kids you can be adventures.
