Learning to Swim in Swaziland: A Child'S-Eye View of a Southern African Country

A fascinating account of a child's year in a far-away land.
This book lets one easily imagine what living in Swaziland must be like. Nila addresses questions that kids (and adults, too) would have about a far-away land: what kinds of toys, clothes, and schools the children have, what kinds of food the people eat, and which way the water swirls down the drain! Through pictures and text, the reader discovers a bit of Swaziland's history, terrain, and ...

excellent historical fiction for students
I'm not sure which grades the book is supposed to be geared toward but given the number of college students I've taught who have difficulty reading, I think this book would work from junior high to college level. Obviously in junior or senior high school classes we are probably talking about English classes or a unit on the Medieval world, perhaps in a world history course or western civ course. ...

LOVED IT!
I am a HUGE fan of the works of Phobe Gillman! The Wonderful Pigs of Jillian Jiggs is a really great book! It's a lot of fun to read to the children in my daycare as the story is funny, imaginative, keeps the interest of the children. I feel it's something we can all really relate to; putting your imagination to work, your heart and soul into a project, developing a bond with what you have ...

Dirt-Cheap Science: Activity-based Units, Games, Experiments, and Reproducibles
Esther Weiner has many years experience teaching science concepts to elementary-age students, and this thoughtful, easy-to-use curriculum was developed out of that experience. Dirt-Cheap Science, for grades 1-4, is divided into three units: life science, earth science, and physical science. Each lesson within the units clearly presents the concepts to both teacher and students via these ...

I finally found IT!
I read this when I was a 7 year old child in the 70s... I have looked a lot of places (libraries, stores, etc.) for the past ten years to no avail... This book is a wonderful example of what good friends are like. I got teary eyed when I told my wife about the story. I definitley plan on purchasing this for my children.

Education find
A very beautiful intelligent read. My children loved it as much as I did. I encouraged my son's teacher to influence her students to read this and similar stories. Not only is it educational for Native American children but also for others. It is important that every American child learn about Native Americans. Unless they live near a rez most people do not even realize Native Americans still ...

Great for preschoolers
The Surprise Garden is a great book for showing young children how a seed becomes a plant. The book engages children by having them guess what fruit or vegetable the plants will become. The illustrations are bright and colorful and are peppered with animals and insects that my kids loved to find. The last page shows what each fruit or vegetable seed looks like and it's fun for kids to try to ...

Will make you think...
A total ten!! A truly thought-provoking, intense & emotional book. I am having my dtr (11) read this book and the discussions will be endless. It opens up dialogue between parents & kids about common misconceptions and snap judgements that we ALL make on a daily basis, sometimes unintentionally, sometimes on purpose. I would say this is more geared to a 6th grader or older unless you judge your ...

Good for teaching rhyming
This is a great book for SLPs (speech-language pathologists) who work with groups of K-2nd grade kids who aren't "getting" rhyming. The kids love to try to be the first to guess what the Hungry Thing is asking to eat. For example, the book reads "tickles, you know, are curly tailed hot dogs that grow in a row. 'Of course,' said the cook, 'tickles taste yummy, and you giggle and laugh with ten in ...

Food and geography for little ones
This book is a whirlwind tour of eating habits of children around the world. In the first part of the book, we see and learn about regional menu items that North American children might eat for lunch, such as clam chowder or gumbo. In the remainder of the book, we visit other continents, and see lunches in countries such as Ghana, Israel, Italy, and China. There is a map at the end of the ...

Childhood favorite good for generations to come
This book was one of my childhood favorites - purschased in 1972 to help me prepare for my new role as big sister! The same copy I read as a child has served to entertain my son and help him understand the changes he's going through as he grows and gets ready for his new role as big brother. The text is simple and easy to understand and the green-and-pink illustrations are charming for all ages.
