Black Theology and Black Power

Culmination of meaning
James Cone put forth Black Theology and Black Power as an explanation of the change required for black men to survive in this society. Cone defines black power as, "complete emancipation of black people by whatever means black people deem necessary." This emancipation call means, "black people no longer see themselves as without human dignity but as men." Cone explains that black people see ...
Perspectives on Our Age: Jacques Ellul Speaks on His Life and Work

Interesting...
I had to read this text as part of my seminary studies. It was certainly interesting. I liked much of what he said in it as it challenges technique and modern society. His perspectives on religion (different than many others) was also helpful. This book will challenge many views that we take for granted. It will lead us to question things we see in society and the church that we take for ...

The First book to read in the Ellul Canon
Jacques Ellul{he of blessed memory], is a difficult man to catagorize. Profound thinker, anarchist and Christian, member of the resistance during WWII,Prophet on technology and propaganda{no one, well few, listened] his writings are somewhat dense{similar in some ways to his countrywoman Simone Weil.}Ellul looks at EVERYTHING THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS,therby alienating those who are genuinely ...
Shape of the Liturgy

Dom Gregory Dix

*The* Classic of Liturgical Studies
Most Liturgical scholars own a copy of Dix's `Shape of the Liturgy.' The reason is that Dix is perhaps the most thorough and erudite liturgical scholar of the 20th century. `Shape' is a classic that has fundamentally shaped most Protestant and Catholic denominations. To the person not familiar with `liturgy,' it means `work of the people,' and is the way in which Christians have traditionally ...

Winnetou
I'm born of West Indian parents, lived in Germany from age 3 to 12, and at that tender age, I naturally spoke fluent German, but I have never been back since 1967 - I'm almost 50 now! But I'll always remember my love affair with the Winnetou series by Karl May. I remember spending countless days and nights inhaling novel after novel. Our next door neighbor's kid had a huge, leather-bound ...
Will Our Children Have Faith?

John H. Westerhoff

Critically important for parents, clergy, educators.
Will Our Children Have Faith? was first published in 1976 and became a classic work on Christian education. Now it has been revised and updated to include a new foreword, chapter updates, and an afterword that incorporates John Westerhoff's thinking (and rethinking) of the issues in Christian education that have arisen in the last quarter century. Westerhoff points out that Christian education ...

BARRINGTON BUNNY
I got this book at a Presbyterian church in the Seventies, probably through the youth group. After twenty-five years I still cry every single time I read 'Barrington Bunny'. Sometimes my tears won't even wait until the end of the story. As Barrington is turned away from others' Christmas festivities and family gatherings, I promise myself to remember that there's people out there at Christmas ...

Recovery of Mystery in Ministry
If the community of God's people perceives his presence everywhere their understanding of the function of the community and of the ministry will be transformed. An exploration of the natural need of humans to see their world as "enchanted." This experience is related to the incarnation. The transcendental experience of God's presence calls the church into engagement with and ministry to the ...

Terrific Book on the Liturgy of the Episcopal Church
This is an excellent book written on the liturgy of the Episcopal Church. It was originally written shortly before the '79 prayer book was published so Liturgy for Living can function as a great "teaching tool" to learn about the meaning behind the rituals of the Episcopal Church. I highly recommended the book.
