The River Why, Twentieth-Anniversary Edition91 reviews
David James Duncan

Sierra Club Books, 2002

David James Duncan: a unique writer and excellent human being.
Dear reader of reviewers, I am completely in awe of Mr. Duncan's writing. He writes as though he's lived 7 lives and had 14 different siblings, and 3 or 4 unique sets of parents. He transcends many writing barriers...his lines of words often have uniquely heightened states of dream-like consciousness. All lines and passages, stories and musings, conversations and descriptions, are very very ...

Ancient Futures: Learning from Ladakh8 reviews
Helena Norberg-Hodge

Sierra Club Books, 1992

Riches to Rags
The first half of *Ancient Futures* will delight and amaze you; the second half will break your heart. In the 1970s, the Ladakhis of Little Tibet were a happy people. They had a sustainable traditional economy based on trade and cooperation - not money. One person's gain was not another person's loss. There was plenty of leisure, no hunger or poverty, very little sickness or disease, everyone ...

The Unsettling of America: Culture & Agriculture17 reviews
Wendell Berry

Sierra Club Books, 2004

Discovering a buried treasure
I grew up in Clarksville, TN, on the border with Guthrie, KY. Up the road not too far is Port Royal, KY, where one of the greatest living Americans still resides. He has lived there as long as I have been alive, and I am now over 30, but I had never heard of Wendell Berry until I had passed my thirtieth year. Were it not for the incomparable radio program "Unwelcome Guests", I may never have ...

Ecopsychology: Restoring the Earth, Healing the Mind9 reviews

Sierra Club Books, 1995

still the classic
Assembled here are some of the leading lights of ecopsychology, with papers and excerpts from the books they've written: Roszak himself, Aizenstat, Hillman, Gomes, Glendinning, and on and on. A rare collection of important voices. The idea of ecopsychology is to open up awareness to the unheard voice of the Earth. "Animism" is a 19th century assumption that assumes the world lives only to the ...

Material World: A Global Family Portrait52 reviews
Peter Menzel, Charles C. Mann

Sierra Club Books, 1995

Beautiful book!
This book is a fascinating look at materialism, or the lack of it, around the world. Oddly enough, the American family was not the most obviously materialistic; there was a Saudi family with a 42 foot long couch! I have put this gorgeously photographed book in my classroom for independant reading time for my 9th graders. It is filled with statistics, information about the countries and the ...

Evening Thoughts4 reviews
Thomas Berry

Sierra Club Books, 2006

In comparison, our cultural thinking is dead.
The perspective I have come to is that for most of my life I lived in a human world which has not been able to offer in any comprehensive way, what really matters. What is going on is that the sources of human survival, imagination, knowledge and emotional balance have been diminished, distanced, ignored and replaced by an enslaving, stale and insulting world views. Enter Thomas Berry who ...

The Dream of the Earth12 reviews
Thomas Berry

Sierra Club Books, 2006

A Fine Guide To Earth/Universe Connectivity
Thomas Berry has put together in this one book what a thousand other writers have attempted and that is: a complete format for human perception of reality that should and can pervade through all our earthly activities, esp. religion, politics and economy. Let Earth and it's biolgical processes teach and guide us to a rational, sustainable, regenerative, healthy existence. There are many potent ...

Galen Rowell: A Retrospective16 reviews

Sierra Club Books, 2006

Must own for any fans of Galen or the outdoors
If you have every looked at Galen's photos and wanted to see more, this is it. With his life cut short, at least we still have archived material that can be released in a book this nice to bring us more glimpses of his world. The color is amazing, the subjects grand, and Galens storys bring it all alive in my livingroom.

Ecological Literacy: Educating Our Children for a Sustainable World (The Bioneers Series)1 review
David W. Orr

Sierra Club Books, 2005

Towards a Deep Ecology of Learning
Living Education: The Power of the Circle This book explores the depth of the challenges of thinking ecologically. I was especially impressed by the focus that is put on process within the decision making process. The variety of topics, and authors offers a wide take on the issues, challenges and hurdles as we move as a society to seeing the world more clearly. Well done.

Come Back, Salmon: How a Group of Dedicated Kids Adopted Pigeon Creek and Brought it Back to Life3 reviews
Molly Cone

Sierra Club Books for Children, 2001

A story well told that young and old alike can relate too.
I first researched this project after reading newspaper accounts and was glad to see this story come into book form. It well illustrates the efforts of these determined students and even made the NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Books for Children list in 1992. It's a good example of a community service project for students and and teachers.

A Naturalist and Other Beasts: Tales from a Life in the Field
George B. Schaller

Sierra Club Books, 2007

Since the 1950s, eminent field biologist George Schaller has roamed through many lands observing wild animals and conducting landmark long-term studies that have deepened our understanding of them. He has reported and reflected on his work in classic books such as The Year of the Gorilla, The Last Panda , and National Book Award winner The Serengeti Lion , but much of his best writing appeared only in magazines. This collection features ...

The Sierra Club Guide to Sketching in Nature, Revised Edition6 reviews
Cathy Johnson

Sierra Club Books, 1997

Cathy keeps it simple...and affordable.
This is a very refreshing book. Cathy Johnson not only makes it look easy to draw and paint loose, yet accurate, watercolor sketches outdoors, but she tells you everything you need to know. This book will actually teach you how to draw and paint what you see, without making things overly complicated. Best of all, her supply list is well within the means of most people. I really enjoyed this book, ...

In the Absence of the Sacred: The Failure of Technology and the Survival of the Indian Nations28 reviews
Jerry Mander

Sierra Club Books, 1992

"All technologies should be assumed guilty until proven innocent."
The `Neo-Luddite' position, as it has been called, the view that evils of modern technology vastly outweigh the benefits, that technology is leading us in a destructive direction, that the benefits of technology are greatly over-hyped and over-sold, that our attitude and approach toward technology and new technological `advances' is at best naïve, at worst suicidal, and long overdue for ...

Bird Brains: The Intelligence of Crows, Ravens, Magpies, and Jays18 reviews
Candace Savage

Sierra Club Books, 1997

Was that Aunt Rose?
A good part of my childhood was spent on an upstate New York farm. We had lots of corn and many other vegetables; many birds - and one extra-special crow. He quickly adopted us and often spoke to my uncle and me by name in my aunt's voice and exact intonations. The vegetable farm, barn, shop-garage, and chicken coop were at the top of a fairly steep hill and the house was at the bottom. Aunt Rose ...

The Complete Book of Edible Landscaping: Home Landscaping with Food-Bearing Plants and Resource-Saving ...6 reviews
Rosalind Creasy

Sierra Club Books, 1982

Excellent book !
I grew up in a garden designed using this book, and now I am working on designing my own. It is a teriffic book with a lot of information about different edible plants and how to design an edible landscape. The only drawbacks are (1) it's a bit dated (new smaller rootstalks let you have smaller trees than you could in '82) and (2) it's a little bit california-centric.

Mountain Light: In Search of the Dynamic Landscape, Tenth-Anniversary Edition21 reviews
Galen A. Rowell

Sierra Club Books, 1995

A photography how-to book, not a camera manual
This is a book about making meaningful landscape photographs. This is not a book about which f/stop to use or how to adjust your depth of field or exposure. There are a ton of those types of books on the market. This book is about vision, learning to see and connecting personally with your images. If you're comfortable with the mechanical aspects of your camera and are struggling with ...

Desert Giant: The World of the Saguaro Cactus (Bash, Barbara. Tree Tales.)5 reviews

Sierra Club Books for Children, 2002

Our third grade class loved your book.
Our third grade loved your book. It gave us a lot of information about the desert. The illustrations were excellent. We especilly liked the use of author techniques such as diagrams, onomatopeias, catchy title and colorful illustrations. We would love to contact Barbara Bash.

Annapurna: A Woman's Place (20th Anniversary Edition)25 reviews
Arlene Blum

Sierra Club Books, 1998

Wow.
This new release of a 20yo book is a winner. I still have my tattered T-shirt proclaiming women should be 'on top,' that I bought in Berkeley way back then, in support of Blum?s fundraising for her 1978 all-woman assault on Annapurna. By proving to the skeptical small mountain-climbing community of men, as well as to the world at large, that women COULD be leaders of expeditions into the high ...

The Book of Bamboo: A Comprehensive Guide to This Remarkable Plant, Its Uses, and Its History9 reviews
David Farrelly

Sierra Club Books, 1984

The most comprehensive book on bamboo..........
Written by the one of the few people in the world qualified to produce a monograph on bamboo, it is as comprehensive as it gets. David Farrelly has spent more than a decade planting, harvesting, and building with bamboo in Mexico, Nicaragua, and the United States. If you are only interested in the growing of bamboo as an ornamental, then this book may not be exactly what you expect, but it ...
