One of the Greatest Classics
This book is one of the greatest novels of all time. I read the Signet classics abridged version of Count of Monte Cristo but have yet to read the unabridged version. Not knowing the difference between the abridged and unabridged, I found that the Signet abridged was fairly well done. There will be a few holes when you cut out about half of the book, but this abridgment didn't make it seem so ...

"Dubliners," Penguin Classics Edition, Intro by Terence Brown
Since Amazon seems to have lumped reviews of sundry editions under one category, I have specified the exact edition on which I am commenting instead of a proper title for my review. It would be presumptuous of me to comment upon Joyce's prose, which in "Dubliners"--in my reader's opinion--seems flawless. I can only tell you the reasons why I adore this book. Joyce views his residents of ...

Lovely to Revisit
I loved this book as a child, and it was so nice to revisit it as an adult. A perfect book to read on a cold, windy winter afternoon when nobody else is home. Your mind can escape to a lovely garden coming to life in the early spring. It inspired me to go for more walks and runs outdoors, no matter what the weather is like. I'll read it to my children.

"There is Always Light Behind the Clouds..."
I inherited my mother's copy of "Little Women" when I was young, but always had a bit of trouble reading it. It wasn't until many years later that I noticed the words: "modern abridged edition" on the cover, and realized on comparison with the full text that my version had been all but chopped to pieces. No wonder I didn't understand anything! So it was a little odd settling down with the ...

Good Book, Good Price
This version of Baum's classic book "The Wizard of Oz" makes a great, not to mention inexpensive, addition to your home library. It's both small and short, making it easy to take with you on a bus trip or for reading in bed. Don't let the cheesy cover fool you--the book contains the actual black-and-white illustrations from the original version. For me, that was a real plus! Other than that, ...

The Essential Arthurian Work
It you're going to read any Arthurian works this is the one to go with.I found this translation very easy to read and quite enjoyable. I've read everything Arthurian from Monmouth to Layamon to The Mabinogion and I always say that even though it's not the oldest of the Arthur Cycle, it is still the most important. Grail lore,adventure,romance,decapitation,-what more could you want in a fifteenth ...

An Impressive Display of Writing Genius
This is a very entertaining book and not difficult to read. Most book lovers will love the book. In my review below I do not give away the plot. That is left for the reader to discover. I read "Dubliners" and then read the present 250 page book as a warm up to ease into "Ulysses." This is a better book than "Dubliners" and we see the genius of Joyce without being intimidated - as the reader ...

The Anti-Federalist Papers
If you want to understand the U.S.Constitution you really need to read the Anti-federalist and federal papers together. It is very interesting knowing what the Constitutional congress discussed and meant when they were working the greatest document in history.

Should be required reading for all U.S. citizens
They say that if you believe enough in something, and have enough persistence to see it through to the end, then regardless of the circumstances, it will be accomplished. I have a hard time indisputably believing this. However, after reading "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave," it's tough to deny the plausibility of the above statement actually being true. To ...

Book report: The Origin of Species, by Charles Darwin
When it comes to subjects like biology and medicine, I am an absolute moron. I only barely avoided failing the one and only biology class I ever took, thanks to an absurd amount of extra-credit outside reading assignments and a science fair project that I still don't understand. I can never remember if DNA is made out of chromosomes or the other way around. Same with proteins and amino acids. I'm ...

Oustanding audio dramatization
Just to be clear, this review is not of Kenneth Grahame's book itself (which gets six stars out of five, in my opinion) but of this BBC radio dramatization of it. It came out in the mid-1990s, and I certainly wish BBC would reissue it again on CD! It's the best retelling I've ever heard - it doesn't "dumb down" the story, but makes it fresh, alive, and dramatic for listeners of all ages. Bring ...

Characters in a small midwest town
Stories in this book are all set in a small midwest town in Ohio. We all have our preconceptions about midwestern people, their attitudes, sensibilities and way of life. Author digs deep into their lives and psyche. By the time you finish this book, you will pretty much know about every member of this small community. People we learn about are lonely, damaged, with no prospects. They are ...

One of the 20th Century's Greatest Novels
Of Human Bondage is W. Somerset Maugham's most famous work and generally considered his masterpiece. It is also probably the greatest bildungsroman ever written and one of the twentieth century's chief novels for its manifold excellences: characterization, style, depth, range, and more. There is hardly a fine literary quality lacking, and they coalesce to form a powerful, moving, and ...

Parody of man
Europe in the 17th and 18th century was much like Latin America in the 20th century, a place where direct criticisms of those in power can be lethal, if not fatal. As a result, those with opinions to voice often do so by writing tales of fiction that parallel events and characters in the real world. Some of these tales have gone on to become great works in Western Literature. One example is ...

Too bad people today are too stupid to read. It appears that if it takes longer than 30 minutes to tell a story from start to finish that it's not interesting. This book is brilliant; it's classic. If you're smart, read it. If you're a moron, watch Sponge Bob.

Read Please
I'm not even an Oscar Wilde fan. His Portrait of Dorian Grey bored me to death, then I picked up his complete fairy tales and came back to life. Simply put, these are parodies of the generic fairy tale...they're funny, clever, and satiric while at the same time managing to be genuinely moving. What I like most about this collection is how playful Wilde is with language. You can just tell ...
