Gordianus Lives!
I'm really enjoying this book. Saylor's writing just gets better and better. I also read "Roma." Another one worth reading. He entertains as well as teaches, the best of both worlds.

St. Martin's Minotaur, 2008
The best book in the series
Julia Spencer-Fleming's sixth installment in the Clare Fergusson and Russ Van Alstyne mystery series is a return to top form. If you haven't read this series, now is an excellent time to start with book #1, "In the Bleak Midwinter", which introduces Clare Fergusson, the new Episcopal priest to her small town upstate New York church and the inhabitants of Miller's Kill. Russ Van Alstyne is the ...

John Hart
St. Martin's Minotaur, 2007
Psychological thriller incorporating a reflection of society
The King of Lies is John Hart's debut book and reads like writing is old hat for him. The main character, "Work" is a flawed individual who reflects so many societal problems. Ezra Pickens is Work's domineering father who goes missing and eighteen months later his murdered body is found. From that point forward in the book it is a tour de force of reflections of society through the characters ...

Solid. Delivers as advertised.
This is a great book by a consistent author. I was planning to read it this weekend, but I peeked at the first couple of pages and wound up reading it straight it through: just like I did with "The Wheelman" and "The Blonde". Really good stuff. If you read Ken Bruen, Charlie Huston, Sean Doolittle, or Greg Rucka books as I do, you'll find that this book will compare favorably. And man, it just ...

Helena is with Per; Emma with her spouse; Olle and his neighbors Eva and Rikard; and finally Beata and her American husband are all there. However, instead of an amiable get together at the trendy tourist locale they chose, jealousies explode leading to accusations and rage. Not long afterward, the prime focus ...

No stranger to acting, she aces the screen test for a racy remake of the movie Body Heat alongside leading man Graf Miliau. The chemistry between them is undeniable, and why not? A Story to be Savored
It took me quite a while to read Chelsea Cain's Heartsick. I was gripped from the beginning. Regardless, I finished three other books in between starting and reading the final word of Heartsick. Every time I picked up Cain's book and read a few more chapters unraveling more of the suspense and mystery, I'd sit it back on the shelf and come back to it days (at times, even a week later) and pick it ...

A Beautiful Mystery!
Down River by John Hart is a mystery story that is packed with much more than its intended. As I breezed through this carefully woven tale, I found myself falling in love with the characters of the tale. Hart has not only crafted an intelligent, simple, mystery but has also crafted some finely drawn characters that really add real literary substance to the pages. When reading the book I felt a ...

Blue Heaven
The area around Kootenai Bay in Northern Idaho was changing. Ranches were giving way to mini estates, ten-acre ranchettes, strip malls, and fast food chains. Some welcomed the change while others saw it as an end of an era. They no longer knew their neighbors, and they didn't know who they could trust, and who they couldn't. The biggest influx of new residents heralded from LA, Specifically ...

What Fun!!
This was so much fun, it almost makes up for no Amelia Peabody book (written by Elizabeth Peters) this year. I got to visit Luxor again. I enjoy all of Joan Hess's books and was so excited to finally get this one that I just opened it and started reading. By the time I was on page 50 it felt so familiar that I had to stop and investigate. I turned back to the front of the book and found that ...

James W. Hall
St. Martin's Minotaur, 2008
A tightly wound thriller - even if the plot is familiar
James Hall is one of my favourite authors, although I have to admit that most of his recent efforts have been a little underwhelming. Hell's Bay is Hall's best in a while, although it still falls short of novels like Bones of Coral and Gone Wild. Hall has always favored darker themes, and his writing is generally more lyrical than other authors in this sub genre (the South Florida crime novel). ...

A reader returning to Three Pines will be delighted to find it changed by the events which occurred in Still Life, but unaltered enough to reacquaint us with its charming melange of interesting characters. Armand Gamache - sensitive, tender, wise, and loyal, is fast becoming one of my favorite sleuths. Warning: read this book in a warm spot cradling a cup of coffee for Ms. Penny will make you ...

I love all of books in this series from the very first one to this latest one. Kate is a strong person and I enjoy reading about life in Alaska. Never once have I been disappointed in Kate or the people in the park. Dana Stabenow writes wonderful stories and I have a hard time between Kate Shugak adventures.
