Container Vegetables: The Easy Way to Garden1 review
Sam Cotner

Texas Monthly Pr, 1987

High Yield from My Balcony
I used this book constantly the first time I tried a container vegetable garden. Dr. Cotner is very lucid in his explanation of the different needs of vegetable plants in pots (vs. in the ground), and gives very simple, clear advice for making sure plants have everything they need to produce well. In spite of the fact that I live in an apartment, I was able to have homegrown pesticide-free ...

Dallas Fort Worth and the Metroplex: #1 Guide to Addison, Arlington, Farmers Branch, Garland, Grand Prairie, ...2 reviews
Robert R. Rafferty, Loys Reynolds

Texas Monthly Pr, 1997

Bravo!
As a 25 year resident of the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex, I must say this man knows his stuff. His ratings of the restaurants are dead on and his discriptions of the cities is not only factual but also amusing. There are things he found I didn't know about and are dying to check out. This is a must read for anyone who wants to know some little known facts about this great metroplex.

Eyebeam: Teetering on the Blink2 reviews
Sam Hurt

Texas Monthly Pr, 1988

It changed my life
I picked up a copy of this book a long time ago from the kansas university bookstore. I couldn't believe how much better it was than anything in the paper. Why wasn't it in the paper?!! of course! It was too good to be next to those cheap hacked out cookie cutters. it was sam hurt that inspired me to start my own career as an underground cartoonist . And it was sam hurt that I ultimately blame ...

The Vegetable Book: A Texan's Guide to Gardening2 reviews
Sam Cotner

Texas Monthly Pr, 1986

Texas Gardener's Bible
A fellow gardener, who claimed it was her favorite, loaned me this book . I have to admit, it's become my favorite too. The book is arranged alphabetically by vegetable and has problems, causes and solutions for each. I've found it indispensable. It's also written in an easily-understood manner. A must-have for serious vegetable gardeners!

Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs26 reviews
John Bloom, Jim Alkinson

Texas Monthly Pr, 1984

Excellent tale of true crime!
This book is a real page turner and an excellent re-telling of the tragic death and murder in a Dallas, TX suburb in 1980. Offers insite into the minds of all the major characters.

Heir Not Apparent2 reviews
Suzanne Finstad

Texas Monthly Pr, 1984

Wrong people got the money!
Great mystery! This book, by Suzanne Finstad, has it all - a thorough biography of legendary recluse Howard Hughes and a Rubik's Cube of plot twists and turns in a fascinating quest to unravel who will win the race to claim the billionaire's fortune. If this were a movie, and it should be, it would be a combination of "Citizen Kane" and "Chinatown!"

A Field Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians of Texas (Texas Monthly Fieldguide Series)1 review
Judith M. Garrett, David G. Barker

Texas Monthly Pr, 1987

Good reference
I use this book at work all the time (state fish and wildlife agency) -- it's quite helpful to both the interested layperson and the professional. Nice, clear photographs, good "thumbnail" maps, and just enough information to be interesting. If you are interested in snakes, please refer to the "companion" in the series, _A Field Guide to Texas Snakes_ by Alan Tennant (recently reprinted).

A Flatland Fable1 review
Joe Coomer

Texas Monthly Pr, 1986

A Flatland Fable easily rates in my top 5 novels of all time
I hate baseball. Even with liberal helpings of beer and good company, I can't sit through more than a couple of innings without pining for hardwood with squeaking sneakers, or pads cracking, or a good ol' fashioned foot race. However, I understand its niche in the American culture and in the hearts of so many of us. That must be the reason I am such a sucker for baseball novels and movies. ...
