The U.S. Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual

Excellent & See Social Networking Analysis (SNA) Appendix
I believe this manual is an excellent overview of counterinsurgency strategy and some tactics. This includes the broad strategy as well as to the drill down for the units/teams/boots on the ground. Its stated audience is for battalion commanders and their staff and higher. I would recommend it to any soldier, sailor or marine regardless of rank and for U.S. citizens generally who have an ...

Niebuhr's warning to America
"Simply put, [this] is the most important book ever written on American foreign policy." Thus writes Andrew Bacevich in his introduction to the newly reissued book written by Reinhold Niebuhr in 1952. Bacevich is a Niebuhr scholar and author of the just published book, "The Limits of Power". He was largely responsible for getting "Irony" reissued. The timing of this book becoming available, as ...

The Mexican Dream: Or, The Interrupted Thought of Amerindian Civilizations
J. M. G. Le Clezio
University Of Chicago Press
, 1993
Not one dream but many unfold in J. M. G. Le Clézio's conjuring of the consciousness of Mexico, strange and powerful evocation of the imaginings that made and unmade an ancient culture. "What motivated me," Le Clézio has said, "was a sort of dream about what has disappeared and what could have been." A widely respected French novelist with a long history of interest in pre-Columbian Mexico, Le Clézio imagined how the thought of early Indian ...

Not Just for Those Interested in Science
Essential reading in understanding why the Enlightenment ideal of rationality is dead or at least doesn't count in ways that matter. In particular, Kuhn calls into question the idea of science as a rational enterprise, and since science is epistemologically privileged and thought to be the essence of rationality, to call into question the rationality of science is to call into question ...

Excellent resource
Although there are many books on writing research or term papers, I have not found anything else which brings together material on planning, reasoning and writing the research paper as well as this book. Ignore any reviewers who make this book out to be a simplistic text. It is an excellent work on well reasoned writing that even most graduate students can benefit greatly from reading. As a ...

Theory From One Who Gets It
To use a term that many in the military are fond of, Nagl "gets it." His understanding of counterinsurgency operations is both broad and deep, and his writing is smooth enough for the lay reader to comprehend without any difficulty. Nagl's departure from the US Army will be a loss for this country's armed forces. However, since he will be taking a position at the Center for a New American ...

Applicable to many disciplines
I read this book back in the 90s while I was studying psycho-linguistics as an undergrad and then grad student. My linguistic interest aptly augmented my interest for roles in information technology - implementation and management (ie communication principles, hierarchical, object-oriented, top-down, bottom-up, etc analysis and implementation are all good examples of applied abstraction, which ...

Translations
Researching translations is never an easy task, and in this case, where you'll have to search on Amazon for the title and the translator to find what you want, it's particularly difficult. Here's what I've found by comparing several editions: 1. David Grene translation: Seems to be accurate, yet not unwieldy as such. My pick. Language is used precisely, but not to the point where it's ...

Haunting
First off, I haven't seen the movie, so this will not be a comparison piece. Norman Maclean's novella is an inspirational story, definitely poignant and touching as so many others before me have stated. This work melds nature, heritage, human emotions, and even metaphysics like none I've ever encountered. In its poetic and deeply probing style, A River Runs Through It compares favorably with the ...

Parker Rules
The Hunter This is the book where Donald Westlake writing as Richard Stark introduces us to Parker in 1962. After re-reading the book after thitysomething years I realize that Lee Marvin was probably cast as a truer version of Parker. Danny DeVito would have been a good messenger and James Gandolfini would have made a better Mal Resnick. The ending was changed for the movie, but what the ...

Western literature starts here
Having been a very lazy student in high school, I'm sure I was assigned to read the Iliad or Odyssey, but never did. A recent trip to Crete, and to the ruins of the Bronze Age Minoan civilization inspired me to read Homer. Considering the comments of reviewers who read the Iliad under duress as students, I'm glad that I read it on my own account. Why read the Iliad? For one thing, it's ...

I read this book from cover to cover and was completely enraptured by the images and descriptions of the various species. What incredible beauty lies in our ocean depths! I became fascinated with this stuff after watching one of the Blue Planet episodes. I also bought a copy and sent it to my brother. What an awesome book!

Groundbreaking for the times
It's hard to imagine how the idea of a comedy team of a black man and a white man would be viewed as shocking and maybe revolutionary. But it was the late 60's and all hell was breaking loose in the states. For these two guys to decide to hold a discourse on race within the forum of comedy was a major achievement. Strange, how we haven't seen anymore interracial teams since.

Simply put, this is a handy writing guide for lawyers. Just casually flipping through this book for a few minutes will make you a better writer.
