Complete Wildflower Reference
I am very pleased with how thorough and complete this book is. It is very comprehensive and user-friendly. You do not have to be fluent in botanical terms to identify an unknown flower. I also agree with the other reviewers that there should also be an index (or at least a cross-reference) of common names. Having to deal with only latin names does create an obstacle. That being said, this is ...

Great Pictorial Reference
My husband and I love to collect hostas and although we have numerous varities, over the years we have failed to keep a record of the name and genus of the individual hosta. We decided to purchase this colorful book as a reference to help us know just what we have and the location where it is located. We plan to do a better job labeling our purchases and this book has already proved to be ...

Just the facts Jack
Pocket Guide to Japanese Maples is an excellent companion to the ultimate maple reference book entitled, Japanese Maples by J.Vertrees and Peter Gregory. I find this book to be well thought out and consolidated. It includes addition information as to cultivation and some newer cultivar. This book gives the reader the most important information quickly, easily and succinctly. I is a very welcome ...

Training Master Gardeners
I teach Master Gardeners. They get a manual plus this book. It greatly reinforces the botany section of the Master Gardener program. The pictures are much better than I could draw by hand....I have used it to teach at least 50 Master Gardeners.

Great Reference Book
Great book, great price, and it arrived before I knew it- in three or four days. This was my first Amazon purchase, as I received a gift certificate for my birthday. I was amazed to find this book at such a great price, about a third less than the list price. This is the latest edition, just updated in 2007, with new photos and information. Great reference book, or you can read it from cover ...

Wonderful Plant Guide for the Northeast
I know how to garden in Kansas, Maryland, Australia, South Texas and Florida, but now I'm learning what plants work for New England. This book is a life saver with descriptions of ferns, grasses, wildflowers, vines, shrubs and trees suited to the region. The photos are good, full-color, but aren't always on the same page as the description. Each plant is listed with its scientific name, ...

Review of Michael Dirr's book on trees
This is probably the best gardening book that I have ever seen. I use it frequently. I am on a committee in my neighborhood that encourages tree-planting by our city's residents. This book is a life saver to take with me when dealing with perspective tree purchasers. It has great pictures of the trees and gives advice as to where they should be planted, problems, et.al. I like it so much ...

Beautiful book
Beautifully illustrated book and so specific. I had a hard time getting used to the detail because most books give you just a paragraph on the grass and very little on care, etc. It's everything you want to know about Ornamental Grasses and more. Very, very complete reference source. Maybe be a bit too much for a average gardener, but if you love grasses and gardening -- this is an ...

Excellent resource
Despite the short length of this book, it was packed with lots of good information and was easy to read. It brought to my attention aspects of fungi versus microbial activity that I was never aware of and how these affect soil quality for gardens versus shrubs. The book has had an immediate payback for me, as I am a novice composter and now know how to do that better. It also described compost ...

Wonderful pre-war English Charm
A thoroughly charming book with a lovely pre-war atmosphere. It is about gardening yes, less about the technical than about the wonders. That weird, ratty vine you chopped down to get rid of, which bloomed like the Dickens two months later, the neighbor who knows everything, has a perfect garden, and seems to stop by just when a mystery fungus has claimed your best plants during the night. ...

Practical prose....
Beverly Nichols, author of MERRY HALL says the love of gardening involves the love of art, the love of love, and the love of death. Following his experiences in WWII, Nichols retired to the English countryside to restore himself mentally, physically, and spiritually. He doesn't inform the reader directly of his background (I know this from having read some biographical material from other ...

simple, smart and useful
A great resource for design professionals. I greatly appreciate the honest real world look at vegetated roof planting. Simple plant mixes that have been tested and photographed are really all i need to spec out a system and sound like the genius architect i pretend to be. This little book has already saved me thousands in consultants. Thanks.
So You Want to Start a Nursery

The otherside of the Nursery
This book is not your typical "grower" book. It has little to do with actually growing, this is a business book. If provides you with details of the actual running of a nursery business that you probably have never thought of. If you are looking at starting a greenhouse/nursery/veggie stand etc this book would be a wise investment.

Destined to be a classic garden reference.
I'm a master gardener from Illinois, and have heard Tracy Disabato-Aust on a number of occasions. Her book The Well-Tended Perennial Garden has long been our bible for perennials. In this new book, she makes accessible for all gardeners the depth of her experience and research in incorporating many kinds of plants in a mixed border. The book is worth buying for the appendices alone: plants by ...
