A Laugh Out Loud Collection
This collection of funny stories is not just for women! It's a fun book to take on vacation and to read aloud to your traveling companion. I particularly enjoyed "The Aunties," by Anne Lamott, as she describes the inner voice battling thoughts on her middle-aged body while standing next to a group of teenagers at a beach side bus stop. A quick, fun read that will keep you laughing and ...

launching point for learning about India or planning a trip to India
I'm giving this book five stars not because the individual travel stories comprising this are five star stories (though many of them are), but because the breadth of subject matter and perspectives this book offers are remarkable. From the frosty passes of the Himalayas to the bustling streets of Calcutta, from the Ganges to shores of Goa, from the rarely-visited tribal interior to the even more ...

A stimulating, inspirational, provocative book
Michael Shapiro's conceptualization for the format of "A Sense of Place" was a stroke of genius. I found the book in the travel section of a bookstore. However, I feel-strongly, that "A Sense of Place" also belongs under the "Literature" and "Writing" headings. "Rich" is the word which consistently entered my mind as I read the interviews with each of the 18 writers whom Shapiro included in ...

An Excellent Intro for People Who Don't Know Where to Start
I am also a writer and I have websites about independent travel and alternatives to traditional group tours, package tours, and EXPENSIVE trips that most people can't afford without financial struggle. I get unsolicited email all the time from people who have no idea where to start. Yesterday, I got an email from a recent college graduate who said he wanted to see the world and literally had no ...

How short stories can jog memories you don't have...
I've been reading a story here and a there from this book for the past few weeks. It's a constant struggle between drinking it all at once, and saving the next story for another day. I've still got a couple left for now, trying to take my time. There used to be a lot of traveling for me. Lately, however, the office has taken its hold, and I travel little more than the daily commute. Soon, I ...

An absolute essential addition to your collection
From the very moment you open this book, you will become immersed in the hilarious, often cringe-inducing antics of women on the road. These brave souls bare all (literally, in some cases) as they face challenges and difficulties with spirit, courage, and a good measure of chutzpah. Every woman should own a copy of this book - absolutely brilliant.

Wonderful Wanderlust
I must admit to initially being skeptical about this book, as I usually find 'Top 10'-style lists to be superficial. But this book highlights fascinating places I didn't even know existed, or that I never imagined visiting. All of them have a women's slant -- be it a place where a heroine "made history"(like the plaza in Buenos Aires where the 'Mothers of the Disappeared' march every Thursday to ...

Floating Through France: Life Between Locks on the Canal du Midi
This was a very enjoyable travelogue written by a group of adventurous women. It tells of their experiences while cruising on the canals in France. Their story brought back many wonderful memories. I made a similar trip on the canals and rivers of Brittany in 1999 with five female friends. This is the book we talked about writing after our trip and never got around to doing. I enjoyed it so much ...

Do what others only dream about doing
Ate this volume up on a flight to the mid-west and enjoyed every minute of it. The book was not meant to be a how-to on taking a family around the planet. There are plenty of books for that. You will discover, through Cohen's (mostly his wife's) honesty, in explaining their errors, that it is possible to tour around the world with youngsters in tow, exposing them to things that they never ...

A ValuableTool
The author has written a book packed so full of valuable information and wisdom that every woman who travels anywhere should read it over and over again. Many of the tips are just as valid when applied to domestic travel as to travel in foreign lands. Some of the topics are safety and security (TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS is her mantra), women traveling together, health and hygiene, keeping in touch, ...

marvelous book-maven
Although this book certainly is rip-roaringly funny, Buslik does himself a disservice by considering himself first and foremost a comic writer. There is a misleading modesty here, because Buslik is a highly skilled prose stylist: a master of controlled language, tone, and the ability to invoke deep emotions, felt and remembered long after the last page. The essays in this collections are ...

Fantastic! Highly recommend this book!
This is a great book. It's lots of short "stories" - some are excerpts from other books (that I've actually read), but some also seem to be short "stories." I really like it because I can pick the book up, look in the table of contents for a title that sounds interesting, and find one with a length that fits the amount of time I have available right then. I particularly enjoy reading it out ...

Reading this book is indeed a great experience. I am really thankful that people abroad have made the effort to introduce Nepal's romantic realities to the world. I am sure that anyone who wants to know about Nepal would definitely benefit from this book. I am glad that I bought this book and learnt so much about my own country. To be honest though being a native, I was not familiar with the ...

A Path to the Inner Realm
Appropriately, "A Woman's Path," a collection of women's spiritual travel writing, was a Mother's Day gift from my daughter. I am a writer, too, frequently writing about my journeys across physical geography but equally spiritual terrain. Nothing explores us as much as our exploring of the world around us. Travel means a stretching of our personal comfort zones, as we leave our homes and our ...

Says a lot by saying little
What is China? Reduced to facts and figures, China is amazing and overwhelming. 1.3 billion people live within its borders. Almost 4 million square miles in area. Its economic and political system defy conventional ...
