The First 100 Chinese Characters: Simplified Character Edition: The Quick and Easy Method to Learn the 100 ...7 reviews
Laurence Matthews, Alison Matthews

Tuttle Publishing, 2007

Really useful
This book really does have the characters you need to know for a basic understanding of Mandarin. I like the fact that it supplies a proper grid, gives you both stroke order and direction, and shows the radical for each character. If you're new to learning Chinese, I'd also recommend flashcards (or make your own based on this book) because constant repetition is the key here.

Tuttle Learning Chinese Characters Volume 1: A Revolutionary New Way to Learn and Remember the 800 Most Basic ...13 reviews
Alison Matthews, Laurence Matthews

Tuttle Publishing, 2007

Great
I agree with the other glowing reviews. One of the hard things about Mandarin is remembering the tone of the words. There are four tones - high, rising, falling/rising, and falling. The characters are either building block characters or formed out of two (and rarely three) building block. E.g., the character for good is comprised of the symbol for woman and child and it has a falling/rising ...

Chinese Children's Favorite Stories8 reviews
Mingmei Yip

Tuttle Publishing, 2005

Something I'd want to have for my own collection
Mingmei Yip is an excellent writer--very engaging. And her illustrations are very colorful and eye-catching as well. I was looking for books to introduce Chinese culture to my young nieces, nephews, and cousins, and I can definitely recommend this one. I couldn't put it down myself, late one night! I had checked out a slew of books from the library, but only some met my criteria of excellent ...

Elaine Sandberg, Tom Sloper

Tuttle Publishing, 2007

Excellent Source of Information
This is an excellent book for beginners and great for those who have been taught by others but need more insight into the correct procedures of playing the game. The print is large, the color of the tiles is clear, and the format is such that each step is clearly understood. Exercises are given to help a person experience what is written. At the end of each section is a quiz to determine how ...

Zen Flesh Zen BOnes: A Collection of Zen and Pre-zen Writings45 reviews
Paul Reps, Nyogen Senzaki

Tuttle Publishing, 1998

The First and Still the Best
This little book was the first popular introduction to Zen in the English language, published by Hawai'ian/ Japanese publisher Tuttle in 1957, compiled from earlier booklets. The date gives the Introduction and the comments a quaint Beat Generation-ish flavour not without its charm. This was the book that introduced me to Zen at the age of 15: I felt I had discovered a new world, I read and ...

Pride and Prejudice (Everyman's Classics)900 reviews
Jane Austen

Tuttle Publishing, 1976

Boy oh boy was I ever wrong about Lady Jane!!!
"Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves; vanity, to what we would have others think of us." Jane Austen I let my own foolish pride, my own ignorant prejudices; deter me from ever picking up a Jane Austen achievement until about a month ago when I finally ...

Etiquette Guide to Japan: Know the Rules...that Make the Difference7 reviews
Boye Lafayette De Mente

Tuttle Publishing, 2001

Better work on your bow!
In Japan, as visiting foreigners keep discovering -- if they're paying proper attention -- "etiquette" means a great deal more than simply knowing which knife and fork to use. (Or, in this case, what not to do with your chopsticks.) Japan has been a deeply and subtly ritualized and mannered society for millennia, and even with the postwar easing of some rituals and the introduction and acceptance ...

I Am a Cat: Three Volumes in One16 reviews
Soseki Natsume

Tuttle Publishing, 2001

Wonderful
I bought the three volume set of this book in 1994 and found it mildly amusing. Now that I'm in academia, I find this book hilarious. It is a fine sendup of pretentious intellectualism--and though there are specifically Japanese references, the humor is universal. Or rather, university-al.

Kwaidan: Stories And Studies Of Strange Things5 reviews
Lafcadio Hearn

Tuttle Publishing, 2005

Japan's most famous collection of ghost and monster tales
"Kwaidan" is Hearn's most famous book, and justifiably so. It is the least academic of his works, collecting together some of Japan's core ghost and monster stories into one slim volume. Much like the Brothers Grimm, Hearn did not actually create these stories but rather compiled them and put them into written form for the first time, learning them from folk tales and storytellers. Along with ...

Rashomon and Other Stories (Tuttle Classics)28 reviews
Ryunosuke Akutagawa, Howard Hibbet, ...

Tuttle Publishing, 2007

'Dissapointed'
I saw Kurosawa's Rashomon and thought that Akutagawa's stories used to build the movie fable could give me some additional amazement extending the one I've gotten from the movie. After reading this book from the front to the back cover and under a single breath - I hardly remember what were my initial expectations and motives urging me to buy and read this book.

A definite keeper - great selection of Asian recipes
Charmaine Solomon's The Complete Asian Cookbook is an excellent collection of recipes covering India & Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia & Laos, Vietnam, Philippines, China, Korea, and Japan. Though by no means comprehensive, the author does try to cover the basic recipes, regional favorites, and offers a variety of curries, noodle dishes, even ...

Adele Westbrook, Oscar Ratti

Tuttle Publishing, 2001

Hands Down The Best Book I Have Ever Read On Aikido!
Although I have been a practicing martial artist for over 25 years, I have yet to find a better book that covers more detailed information on the art of Aikido than this book. Simply put, this is the best book that is currently available on the market as of today (October 7th, 2008), on the Japanese martial art of Aikido. The sheer amount of technical and analytical information that is ...
