Pilgrim Church: A Popular History of Catholic Christianity6 reviews
William J. Bausch

Twenty-Third Publications, 1989

Thorough, yes - I agree about the dryness.
Like the above reviewer, I found the content good but the writing a little tough at times. The edition I read could've benefitted from different typesetting and layout as well. My interest began to flag a little as we moved towards the modern period and Vatican II, but in fairness, it was early church history I was primarily interested in.

Happy Together: The Catholic Blueprint for a Loving Marriage4 reviews
John Bosio

Twenty-Third Publications, 2008

Highly Recommended
John Bosio has authored a wonderful book on the Catholic understanding and theology of the sacrament of Marriage. This "blueprint" for a loving and lasting marriage uses the sharing and witness of real people in real-life relationships and challenges. We especially enjoyed how the author uses scripture passages to solidify and support his thesis that God needs to be an integral part of any happy ...

The Creed: The Apostolic Faith in Contemporary Theology6 reviews
Berard L. Marthaler

Twenty-Third Publications, 2007

An excellent introductory approach to theology
This book is a one volume compendium of Catholic Theology organized around the Nicene-Constantinople Creed. In addition to a detailed explantion of basic theological principles, the book also traces the history of the creed especially during the first centuries and details the many heresies that contributed to each word being carefully chosen for the final product. The author offers the reader ...

The General Directory for Catechesis in Plain English: A Summary and Commentary1 review
Bill Huebsch

Twenty-Third Publications, 2001

A Fine Book
A good book which simplifies the complicated language so fondly used by the Catholic Church.

The Complete Children's Liturgy Book: Liturgies of the Word for Years A, B, C10 reviews
Katie Thompson

Twenty-Third Publications, 1996

What a wonderful find!!
I have been in charge of the children's mass at my church for a few years now. We had some old books from the 1970's that we were using, but they had inadvertantly got recycled during a clean out that I missed at our church. So, I went on several sites trying to find a replacement. When I found this book, I was apprehensive about what might be inside. I was very happy when it arrived. Not only ...

A Source Among Resources for RCIA
This manual is used exclusively by our parish for our RCIA program. It guides candidates on a journey towards a better understanding of the human response to faith and conversion. It has a unique Q/A section at the end of each chapter that directs and stimulates conversations on topics that may not otherwise be discussed. It also offers other authorities for further study.

Faith, Religion & Theology: A Contemporary Introduction1 review
Brennan Hill, Paul F. Knitter, ...

Twenty-Third Publications, 1997

It's ok.
This book was a requirement for a class. It reads fairly easily. I wouldn't consider it something one would necessarily read for pleasure, unless you're just really into discussing theology.

Once Upon a Gospel: Inspiring Homilies and Insightful Reflections
William J. Bausch

Twenty-Third Publications, 2008

When the words "great homily" come to mind, the name Bill Bausch inevitably pops up. This book is evidence of that. It contains 116 new, never before published original homilies plus 39 previously published ones now out of print. In addition to homilies reflecting the liturgical year, there are special occasion homilies for holy days, holidays and other celebrations. All are shaped around stories in imitation of the Bible, itself essentially a ...

New Look at the Sacraments4 reviews
William J. Bausch

Twenty-Third Publications, 1983

Good overview
Bausch's Sacraments is a good historical and theological overview of the seven sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church. It is readable and easy to understand for beginning lay people and has enough content for high level readers. We use this book as a textbook for the area's adult religious education program sponsored by seven area Catholic parishes.

While You Were Gone: A Handbook for Returning Catholics, and Those Thinking About It8 reviews

Twenty-Third Publications, 1994

Refreshingly honest and insightful
I was given this book by the Benedictine nun in charge of my parish's religious education program. As a returning Catholic, I found this book to be exhilarating in its honesty about the Church's flawed history and the changes it has undergone in recent years. Like the book says, "Eccesia semper reformanda": The Church is always in need of reform. We must always strive for perfection. This ...

Advent & Lent Activities for Children: Camels, Carols, Crosses, and Crowns (Bestseller)1 review
Shiela Kielly, Sheila Geraghty

Twenty-Third Publications, 1996

A Worthwhile Reference
This book provides a wide-ranging exploration of the history and traditions surrounding common (and sometimes surprising) Christian symbols of the Advent and Lenten seasons. It also contains numerous excellent suggestions for introducing these symbols into teaching and worship. In fact, so many of these suggestions are suitable for use with all ages I think it's somewhat unfortunate that the ...

Tomorrow's Catholic: Understanding God and Jesus in a New Millennium (Inspirational Reading for Every ...10 reviews
Michael Morwood

Twenty-Third Publications, 1997

Challenging and thoughtful
I finished this book, flipped it over and started reading it again. Morwood's message spoke to me in a profound and exciting way: I've struggled to reconcile my call to Catholicism with church doctrines that appear irrelevant or affirmatively harmful; Morwood provides a framework for "re-imaging" God, Jesus and Church in a manner that resonates deeply for me. The church scandals and the ...

Strories Woven into a Spritiual Journey

Who We Are Is How We Pray: Matching Personality and Spirituality2 reviews
Charles Keating

Twenty-Third Publications, 1987

Who We Are Is How We Pray
Keating takes the Myers-Brigg personality test to a practical level in the field of spirituality. He relates the four major personality types to the four major spiritualities of western Christianity. Reading this book was a revelation of my own response to prayer styles and types. As a preacher of the Gospel, the book made me aware of others response to prayer styles also and the need to ...

Catholic Social Teaching and Movements4 reviews
Marvin L. Krier Mich

Twenty-Third Publications, 1998

Five Stars - despite One Serious Fault
Oh Lord, what a mixture here of profound, profound value, heart and beauty ... and a frequent dogmatic, polemical tone that disserves the author's sincere, heartfelt intent. Let me begin with the gold. The author cares, the author *obviously* cares. Thus his book can serve to open one's heart to the terrible, terrible suffering the victims of third world poverty, war, racism and other ...
