The Way to Make Wine: How to Craft Superb Table Wines at Home9 reviews
Sheridan Warrick

University of California Press, 2006

Great first wine making book - still good for those more advanced
This book has been a wonderfull read, and has taken me from knowing almost nothing to feeling confident and excited about my first upcoming vintage. From understanding how to get grapes to feeling comfortable with testing for the total acidity of a wine, this book has been a real pleasure. I walked away from this book knowing much more than I did walking into it.

Insomniac11 reviews
Gayle Greene

University of California Press, 2008

Thanks
This isn't a `self-help' but a self-helping book. Here's just about everything you can try, with details about what happened to the author when she tried them. She is wonderfully careful to stress that everyone experiences insomnia differently, and the best she can do is share her own and a few other's experiences. And her indignation that medical science has simply given up on insomnia as just ...

The Reluctant Communist: My Desertion, Court-Martial, and Forty-Year Imprisonment in North Korea7 reviews
Charles Robert Jenkins, Jim Frederick

University of California Press, 2008

A Harrowing Tale of Desertion and Redemption
The Reluctant Communist is the harrowing tale of Charles Robert Jenkins' life in North Korea following his desertion from the US Army in 1965. The story is bookended with an exposition of his life before desertion and his ultimate escape in 2003 and new life in Japan. On the book's cover, we see Jenkins staring out from the cover of the Reluctant Communist with a near-expressionless face that ...

Pathologies of Power: Health, Human Rights, and the New War on the Poor (California Series in Public ...19 reviews
Paul Farmer

University of California Press, 2004

Health and survival as human rights
Paul Farmer, perhaps the most famous 'Third World doctor' living today, has written an eloquent and moving plea for a reconsideration of modern approaches toward healthcare in the developing nations in this book, "Pathologies of Power". Based on his personal experiences of care in Haiti, but also his professional visits to Russia, Africa, Central America, Mexico, Cuba and many other places ...

Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition, and Health, Revised and Expanded Edition ...36 reviews
Marion Nestle

University of California Press, 2007

A Well-Documented Book, A must read for everybody who eats
I found this book to be very informative about the political workings of the food industry. I agree with several other reviewers that it is a little dull and in an factual style (kind of reminds me of a history book. However I like that kind of reading, so it doesn't bother me.) This book's basic premise is that the food industry's purpose is to sell as much food as possible. The food industry ...

Food: The History of Taste (California Studies in Food and Culture)4 reviews

University of California Press, 2007

Real Gastronomy in a Fine Style
I must say I was truly fortunate to receive a pre-publication copy of this exquisite volume. Editor Paul Freedman displays all the literary deftness of an M.F.K. Fisher or Calvin Trillin, without ignoring the analytic depth of gastronomic writing since Brillat-Savarin. An academic historian, Freedman treats the history of cuisine with a refreshing clarity and seriousness in his introduction. ...

On Deep History and the Brain2 reviews
Daniel Lord Smail

University of California Press, 2007

A guide for the guild
History has addressed a number of Big Questions through the years. As Daniel Smail notes, however, the biggest one has been "Where to begin?" For centuries, the answer seemed simple: the "Creation". Scholars in Christian Europe were able to begin history with the couple in Eden, building from that well-defined starting point. Later, the historians "guild" shifted their foundation. The result was ...

The Practice of Everyday Life7 reviews
Michel de Certeau

University of California Press, 2002

Enigmatic and enlightening
Sometimes I am simply proud that I have read a book. This slim volume falls into that category. The fourteen short chapters explode with new ideas, fresh perspectives, and tantalizing viewpoints. To summarize these riches is unlikely to do them justice, yet I will try. De Certeau inverts social values and cultural hierarchies. His hero metaphor is not the exemplar, but rather the ant. Wisdom ...

The Wines of Burgundy: Revised Edition2 reviews
Clive Coates M.W.

University of California Press, 2008

Highly Recommended for Burgundy fans...
This is the long-awaited second edition of Clive Coates' Cote d'Or book. It contains an amazing level of details on the Burgundy producers, regions, districts, and vineyards. This edition also covers vintages from 1959 forward, up to and including a brief review of the 2007 vintage. It's mind boggling how much information there is. And it's also envy-inducing to realize how much wines Mr. ...

The Science of Wine: From Vine to Glass4 reviews
Jamie Goode

University of California Press, 2006

Out to Pasteur
I'm not much of a scientist. In fact, my career as a doctor ended abruptly in the first week of college when I discovered that a required chemistry course also required my attendance three days a week at 8:00 AM. So I approached this book with trepidation on several levels. Would it be pitched too heavily in science-speak for me to understand? Was it really more of a textbook than consumer's ...

Infections and Inequalities: The Modern Plagues6 reviews
Paul Farmer

University of California Press, 2001

Shining a Light
Dr. Farmer sums up what you can hear in his lectures (he is an amazing speaker), read in journals, and hear in his interviews: The "modern day plagues" result directly from Structural Violence. I read this book for my culture and health class and could not put it down. He writes with an eloquence unheard of in most anthropologists while at the same time with the passion of a deeply concerned ...

Rome and Environs: An Archaeological Guide
Filippo Coarelli

University of California Press, 2008

This superb guide at last brings the work of Filippo Coarelli, one of the most widely published and best known scholars of Roman archeology and art, to a wide, English-language audience. Conveniently organized by walking tours and illustrated throughout with clear maps, drawings, and plans, Rome and Environs: An Archaeological Guide covers all of the city's ancient sites, and, unlike most other guides, now includes the major monuments in a ...

Painting With Light16 reviews
John Alton

University of California Press, 1995

While I don't agree with every view in this book, I find this book superior to many on aspects of photography and film
First off, I want to note that the author DOES cover still photography in this book even though the major emphasis is on film techniques. As someone who has always considered lighting to be vital, learning more lighting techniques is a passion. I was naturally drawn to this one. It didn't disappoint. Very convincingly, Mr. Alton makes his case for the way lighting and setting can affect the ...

Unequal Childhoods: Class, Race, and Family Life9 reviews
Annette Lareau

University of California Press, 2003

Unequal Childhoods Well Written and Well Researched
Everyone knows that socioeconomic status is related to academic success, but not many books have examined the lives of kids outside of school in detail to reveal how differences in social class are related to differences in use of language, organizing time, dealing with authorities, family disputes, and doing homework. I'm a professor in a graduate school of education, and it was important ...

The Three Faces of Chinese Power: Might, Money, and Minds
David M. Lampton

University of California Press, 2008

Clear, comprehensive, and well-balanced, this unique assessment takes the measure of what is arguably the most important geopolitical change in today's world: the growth of China's power. In the only book on the subject to be based on extensive interviews with elite political leaders, diplomats, and others in China, the United States, and countries on China's periphery, David M. Lampton investigates the military, economic, and intellectual ...

Designing California Native Gardens: The Plant Community Approach to Artful, Ecological Gardens8 reviews
Glenn Keator, Alrie Middlebrook

University of California Press, 2007

The Perfect Book for Any Californian Who Wants to Save the Environment in Their Own Backyard
This book is excellent, with many good photographic examples of complete native landscape. It also set for an excellent philosophy for landscape design for the both the use of native and non-native plants. However it really shouldn't be thought of as a complete source for native gardening. I would also suggest that you pick up 'California Native Plants for the Garden' by Carol Bornstein, David ...

The Copyeditor's Handbook: A Guide for Book Publishing and Corporate Communications20 reviews
Amy Einsohn

University of California Press, 2005

Very helpful
This a great guide for anyone new to the publishing scene. No matter how great your writing and grammar skills are, you will need a book like this to help you learn how to prepare a manuscript properly. It is also very nicely written and enjoyable to work through.
