"With His Pistol In His Hand": A Border Ballad and Its Hero4 reviews
Américo Paredes

University of Texas Press, 1970

With his pistol in his hand
This outstanding book gives a wonderful look at the rich culture that developed in the geographic region between Mexico and the United States. The people that lived on either side of the border were a mix of religious ideals, values and cultures joined by need, location and lack of powerful policitical presence from either nation. This book outlines the similiarities and the differences ...

I purchased both books for an Aunt and Uncle who watch his show on RFD-TV. Both say it's an excellent read.

Breaking Out of Beginner's Spanish116 reviews
Joseph J. Keenan

University of Texas Press, 1994

Great book Couldn't put it down.
I recommend this book to those who have learned a fair amount of Spanish words... those used commonly in Spanish magazines and on Spanish television. That is not to say, that you are fluent in Spanish, but can conjugate most verbs easily if given the time. It's a great stepping stone to get to the next level of understanding. It really pinpoints the "actual" usages of words and without the ...

Bob Bullock: God Bless Texas (Clifton & Shirley Caldwell Texas Heritage Series)3 reviews
Dave McNeely, Jim Henderson

University of Texas Press, 2008

Could not put it down
This was an engaging book. It is written by a reporter whom Bullock was at odds with, so one must take it with a grain of salt. But, bless his heart, Bob Bullock gave many years to the people of Texas. When I was done reading the book, I resolved to visit his grave at the Texas state cemetery. This is a riveting read!

100 Love Sonnets: Cien sonetos de amor (Texas Pan American Series) (English and Spanish Edition)55 reviews
Pablo Neruda

University of Texas Press, 1986

100 Love Sonnets: Cien sonetos de amor (Texas Pan American Series) (Spanish Edition)
This was a Valentine's day gift for a significant other who has taught himself Spanish. I appreciated that the book had both the English and Spanish version of each poem on facing pages. That is a great learning tool. It is also great for people who love to see how someone interpreted the translation part of the equation. The shipper was nice and responsive.

The Dialogic Imagination: Four Essays (University of Texas Press Slavic Series)7 reviews
M.M. Bakhtin

University of Texas Press, 1982

Bakhtin's most important and influential work on the novel
This book consists of four essays of Bakhtin's "Middle Period", two short and two longer works which have been arranged, according to complexity, with the most accessible essay first and the most difficult last. Cooincidentally, this is also the reverse order in which they were written. None of these essays were avaiable in English before the present translation/compilation by Emerson and ...

Drug War Zone: Frontline Dispatches from the Streets of El Paso and Juárez3 reviews
Howard Campbell

University of Texas Press, 2009

Fascinating ethnography of border violence
The US Mexico Border is one of the most unique among anthropological spaces. Apart from being bi-national, it is enormously complex in the variety and interplay of cultures and social classes. The area, now affected by a drug war in Mexico, remains "safe" on the US side and anarchic on the Mexcian side. Yet the communities of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez are deeply intertwined and inextricable. In ...

The Burning Plain: and other Stories (Texas Pan-American Series)9 reviews
Juan Rulfo

University of Texas Press, 1971

The perfect writing
One regrettable consequence of Garcia Marquez's fame is that Latin American literature has come to be identified exclusively with "magical realism". Everything has to be extraordinary, epic, full of tropical lust, palms, jaguars, people having sex in every corner, flying to the sky with a pineapple on their heads. But Latin America is a vast continent producing artist of universal stature, even ...

Texas Tornado: The Times and Music of Doug Sahm (Brad and Michele Moore Roots Music Series)
Jan Reid, Shawn Sahm

University of Texas Press, 2010

Doug Sahm was a singer, songwriter, and guitarist of legendary range and reputation. The first American musician to capitalize on the 1960s British invasion, Sahm vaulted to international fame leading a faux-British band called the Sir Douglas Quintet, whose hits included "She's About a Mover," "The Rains Came," and "Mendocino." He made the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in 1968 and 1971 and performed with the Grateful Dead, Dr. John, Willie ...

Twentieth-Century Latin American Poetry: A Bilingual Anthology (The Texas Pan American Series) (English and ...

University of Texas Press, 1996

Latin Americans have written some of the world's finest poetry in the twentieth century, as the Nobel Prizes awarded to Gabriela Mistral, Pablo Neruda, and Octavio Paz attest. Yet this rich literary production has never been gathered into a single volume that attempts to represent the full range and the most important writers--until now. Here, under one cover, are the major poets and their major works, which appear both in the original language ...

Notes on Blood Meridian (Southwestern Writers Collection)5 reviews
John Sepich

University of Texas Press, 2008

I finally got my hands on a copy, and it's great!
After years of hearing about Notes On Blood Meridan by John Sepich, but not wanting to pay US$400 for a copy, I finally went down to my local branch of the public library and requested a copy through the inter-library loan department. In a few weeks a copy was delivered and now I have the copy right in front of me. (The inter-library loan fee was $10.00 but that's better than paying someone ...

A Deeper Blue: The Life and Music of Townes Van Zandt (North Texas Lives of Musician Series)13 reviews
Robert Earl Hardy

University of North Texas Press, 2009

The definitive Townes biography? Almost certainly.
To be a fan of Townes Van Zandt is to be a member of a worldwide brotherhood/sisterhood - his extraordinary songs are a source of solace, comfort and guidance to those in on the secret, those who have taken the time to apprehend and understand. His work transcends boundaries of genre, and for all their variable quality, there is something in almost every song, be it a couplet, a characteristic ...

Birds of Belize (The Corrie Herring Hooks Series)15 reviews
H. Lee Jones

University of Texas Press, 2004

Birds of Belize
I ordered the book as above while still in Belize. The order was waiting for me upon my return home and in exactly the excellent condition it was reported to be. I would do business again with this seller. For anyone interested in the book itself, I highly recommend it. I have seen several books on Birds of Belize and just othe tropical birds, but this is a much larger volume with ...

Sculpting in Time: Tarkovsky The Great Russian Filmaker Discusses His Art18 reviews
Andrey Tarkovsky

University of Texas Press, 1989

Cinema as an Art form
"Sculpting in Time" is truly an amazing work of art in its own right. Certainly filmmakers have written books about their artistic styles in the past. Philosophers have written elaborately on the subject of aesthetics as a whole in the past as well. And yet "Sculpting in Time" offers those with aesthetic interests something truly unique. It should be forewarned that Tarkovsky, like Ingmar ...

Latino Images in Film: Stereotypes, Subversion, and Resistance (Texas Film and Media Studies Series)1 review
Charles Ramírez Berg

University of Texas Press, 2002

Great for students who are looking for Media bias.
Just as Reel Bad Arabs, this book looks deep into media bias when it comes to minorities. This particular book looks deep into Latino imgaes in cinema! So sad that a minority needs to be vilified so fil producers can make some money!

Think Like an Architect (Roger Fullington Series in Architecture)4 reviews
Hal Box

University of Texas Press, 2007

Thinking Inside the Box
As someone who has an interest in architecture but whose knowledge of architectural theory and history are superficial and spotty, I found Hal Box's book Think Like an Architect an especially rewarding read. Written with the confidence earned from a long, successful, and satisfying career, his book is a straightforward explanation of both the intention and process of producing the kind of ...

Morphology of the Folktale (Publications of the American Folklore Society)5 reviews
V. Propp

University of Texas Press, 1968

Ian Myles Slater on: Brilliant, But Hard Going
This is an attempt to work out the underlying structural patterns (types of characters, what they do, how they are ordered) of Russian folktales, based on classic collections made in the nineteenth-century. If you are fortunate enough to have read a large collection of such stories -- preferably in translation, not "retold by ..." -- you will soon see the point of Propp's argument. Other ...
