Greed , power and the forces that counteract them
Barry Unsworth's historic novel that won the Booker Prize is an exceptional literary accomplishment and well worth the prize. The word 'vast' would be a good way to describe the novel since it has multiple vividly drawn characters selected from a broad range of social classes and conditions. It is also vast in chronological scope as it covers several 18th century decades in the lives of the ...

Why Didn't the Incas Invade Spain?
The Aborigines of Australia built mankind's first known watercraft 40,000 plus years ago, yet today they are the most primitive stone age people of any continent. Why is that? Did the mother of invention arise from people living in harsh tropical/desert climates forced to invent in order to survive? Or did it arise in colder climates more readily because people were trapped in their warm home ...

Fun to read, with great insights
I love physics and reading biographies and in a way this is a perfect book. It does not go into physics issues though, it is more about the life of a great scientist and a very different and profound person, Feynman. The only strong criticism may be that he was known for telling stories about himself, and generally knew how to portray an image of a very smart and original man. I don't mind, ...

I loved this book
This was an inspiring, interesting, and practical book. It's a quick read and the fundemental rules of survival are the same rules for success in business, life, relationships...staying aware, being resourceful, keep moving, dealing with reality/not pereception of how it should be or how you'd like it to be, and most importantly having faith in yourself and others. Great book for anyone.

Invisible Monsters
Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk ***** Well written and captivating. If there ever was a novel that deserved the title a page turner then Invisible Monsters is it. It just may or may not be Up-Chucks best yet. If it isn't it is a close second. The story of a woman who's face is horribly mutilated and transformed, which is also true of her life, turning her form one of the most ...

Anthony Burgess

Successfully tackles so many tough topics in so few pages. Truly impressive.
Wow, this book goes after some truly weighty subjects in a short time frame. Burgess tells the story of his narrator, Alex, who is a clearly intelligent young man who has focused his youthful talents on setting out each night to terrorize the innocent citizens of a futuristic London. The book is famous for Burgess' heavy use of a made-up slang that a committed reader will pick up quickly ...

Praise for the audio book version
I bought this book in audio format to fit it into my busy life. I just wanted to plug the excellent reading of this most excellent book. Shelly Frasier as narrator is virtuoso. She fully transmits the conversational style of the writing along with the humor. It is almost like hearing the author herself narrating her own work. I join the others who enjoyed this book. You will learn much that ...

Excellent and fun introduction
My wife recommended this book as a good introduction to economics, and she was spot-on. Since I'd never taken an econ class in college, I was the perfect candidate for Naked Economics. It introduced many concepts I'd heard of but never fully understood (inflation, for example), and the author illustrated them using examples I could relate to. This book often touched on issues of inequality and ...

Genius takes on genius
I grew up reading Martin Gardner in Scientific American, and although I didn't get interested in Lewis Carroll until I saw the original "Alice" manuscript in a display at the British Library, I've been a fan of children's stories all my life. Having Gardner expound Carroll is (dare I say it?) pure genius. I have a number of annotated works, but I think this is the only one where the notations ...

very popular account of how statistics can be misused
Statisticians hate the old adage "Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics", but statistical methods do have that reputation with the general public. There are many excellent accounts, some even understandable to laymen that explain the proper ways to analyze, study and report the analysis of statistical data. Huff's famous account is illustrative and well written. It gives the average guy a look at how ...

Full handy explanation of relativity, quantum mech., & Superstring theory
I had seen this book before in a bookstore years ago, but I did not buy it. Big mistake. Greene explains the workings of the universe in down to earth terms (no small feat). Expand your brain a Large notch, if you are not scientifically inclined, as to the modern ideas circulating over the all important Superstring theory - without being a mathematician or physicist!

Finally................................
After 26 years of thinking, "I should be over it", I now know its part of my body, not just my brain. I remember yelling out loud, THATS IT, and thinking I felt better immediately. I wasn't a loser, basket case mental job, but "my body remembers". I gave the book to my therapist, hoping she can help others. I actually contacted author to thank her, and she has a new book in the process. Thank ...

The good book, indeed.
My initial experience was at first frustration at the length of recipes and equipment needs of all the recipes. I also felt there was too much "fluff" and that the whole book could have been cut in half. These feelings turned positive when I got patient, sat down, read and baked. When the recipe for Jewish Rye came out of the oven it was superb. My girlfriend and I agree that we've never had ...

Daughter of the Saints
Daughter of the Saints is a long-time labor over a difficult subject and with many risks. Much of the intrique in the book is the unconscious recognition by the reader that this author is unusual in the sense that she'd even consider wrting about such a bizare upbringing. Anyone who has even considered expressing non-consenting views of one's own family and especially their religion---no matter ...

I miss Yuliang
Upon finishing Jennifer Epstein's luminous tale of a courageous, passionate woman's personal and artistic triumph over circumstance, I wept, so much had Yuliang inspired and moved me. She lingers still, thanks to Epstein's lyrical, keenly observed writing, from the smallest detail to the overall epic story arc. Brava.

Wow
This was incredible. Why wasn't I assigned to read this in high school? I want to read more like this. This is up there with Homer. This new translation is a very easy-to-read one, I sat down and pretty much read this straight through. I really enjoyed looking back and forth at the old English vs. the contemporary. This was really really great.
