America (Flying High) 4 reviews Jim Wark
White Star, 2004
Looking down on America I first came across Jim Wark's work in 'A field guide to sprawl' by Dolores Hayden (ISBN 0393731251) where fifty-one of his aerial photos were used to decode the American man-made landscape. This latest work is a glorious celebration of the Nation, man-made and natural, in a thick chunky book and for the price this has to be a bargain.
The nine chapters cover it all, cities, rock formations, ...

K2 (Adventure Classics) 4 reviews Roberto Mantovani, Kurt Diemberger
White Star, 2008
Gorgeous pictures, somewhat dry text -although the text may just have suffered in the translations. If you want to see the single best collection of K2 photographs I've ever seen, and I have them all, this is the book for you. A bargain at anything less than about $250.00, it's bound and published beautifully (at least my copy was!)

Pompeii: The History, Life and Art of the Buried City 11 reviews Marisa Ranieri Panetta
White Star, 2004
A huge book for a little price. Lots of wonderful pictures and information. I was really surprised. It's not a book you can bring along to Pompeii (it's really heavy and large). That was my orginal idea. However, it's filled with amazing pictures and details that I'll note and try to see. It will also be nice to have after my trip because there is no way I'll have the pictures that this book provides. I highly recommend ...

Ancient Rome (Great Civilizations) 4 reviews Anna Maria Liberati, Fabio Bourbon
White Star, 2005
Great visuals This book is not much on narration -- but it isn't really supposed to be. The book is filled with outstanding photographs, prints, drawings, maps, and architectural plans that will be useful to anyone in the business of teaching social studies. This is one of those wonderfully inexpensive oversized hardcover books that makes you feel good just by owning it.

Extreme Nature: Images from the World's Edge (Discovery) 7 reviews Bill Curtsinger
White Star, 2005
Extreme Nature by Bill Curtsinger I loved this book of photographs and suggest it ought to go on everybody's Christmas and Hannukah lists. Curtsinger was one of the pioneers of underwater photography (he's shot something like 35 National Geographic articles and six covers), specializing in the strange and marvelous polar regions. The cover alone is worth the price of the book. It's a shot of two penguins, not cuddly tuxedoed ...

World Trade Center 8 reviews Peter Skinner
White Star, 2002
FINALLY-Just What I Needed! As a native New Yorker who formerly had a beautiful view of the World Trade Center, and now avoids looking at the painfully flat skyline every day, I have this fabulous volume to treasure instead. .............. While disappointed with the flood of tributes to the still unfathomable tragedy of 9/11, this book was a must have the moment I thumbed through for a quick cursory look. I was ...

Vanishing Africa: A Photographer's Journey 6 reviews Gianni Giansanti, Paolo Novaresio
White Star, 2004
Vanishing The photographs are everything, showing African villagers much as they have lived for the past century. This is not modern Africa, but its last remaining tribal cultures completely tied to the rhythms and livelihood of stoop farming, animal husbandry, and tribal warfare. The people are often beautiful, their adornments alternately colorful and extreme (those lip disks make me wince).
At ...

Earth (Big Cube Book) 5 reviews Alberto Bertolazzi
White Star, 2006
so inspiring! This is a great book with so many gorgeous pictures than are really inspiring... I spent hours in the sun flicking through the pages, looking at the beautiful photos taken around the world.
The only part I went through quickly was the 'mountains' section where it was just too many photos of similar snowy mountains one after the other.
Other than that, I highly recommend it!

Egypt (Explorers & Artists) 10 reviews Fabio Bourbon
White Star, 2004
Egypt: yesterday and Today This is a most amazing book, it has both water colours and photos of the sights of Ancient Egypt. As a reminder of a special holiday or a factual account it is the best. The size of the book makes it prominent coffee table book and easy to just pick up and dip into another wondeful page.

Global 200 World Wildlife Fund: Places That Must Survive (Journeys Through the World and Nature) 2 reviews
White Star, 2007
Global 200 World Wildlife Fund: Places That Must Survive (Journeys Through the World and Nature) This book would make a great gift for yourself or anyone with an interest in helping to protect the most important ecosystems that remain on the planet. Outstanding photography will inspire the reader to learn more about the critical habitats identified by WWF and others as the Global 200. I have reviewed numerous large format books like this over the years and give this one my highest ...

Travels in Egypt and Nubia (The Great Adventures) 3 reviews Giovanni Battista Belzoni
White Star, 2007
Excellent and Entertaining with a few corrections... First: This book as published contains some errors so be sure to correct them in your copy. Corrections are listed after the review.
This book is an excellent book if you are interested in the early explorations and excavations of Ancient Egypt. It reads like an adventure and puts you in the shoes of the first archaeologists. In fact, Howard Carter, the man who discovered the tomb of ...

Eyes into Secret Seas 2 reviews Jeffrey L. Rotman
White Star, 2001
Amazing closeup photography I had heard that Jeffs work was excellent, but was totally blown away by the color, clarity, and variety of everything that was in this book. I would reccomend any of his works of art to anyone who is looking for an informative and rare look into the creatures of the ocean. It would also make a great gift to your boating friends. My biggest question was, "How did he ever get some of those ...

Flowers (Cube Books) 2 reviews Valeria Manferto De Fabianis
White Star, 2007
A visual feast This cube-shaped book has more beautiful photos of flowers from around the world than books two or three times as big and twice or three times the cost. I pick it up and start anywhere and am immediately captured by the intensity and artistry of the images. I've been giving it as birthday gifts and people love it.

Art & Design in Modern Custom Folding Knives 3 reviews David Darom
White Star, 2006
I know I'm prejudiced but... I want to say right up front that I am David Darom's partner in his third knife book, "The Art of Modern Custom Knifemaking, 100 Custom Knife Related Projects in the Making" (soon to be released). I very much wanted to write this review, but because of my current relationship with David I was concerned that some might question my motives. But I can tell you that I would not have even met David ...

Shells 3 reviews Giorgio Gabbi
White Star, 2000
Lovely photos, fair figures, lacking on text This is an excellent book. I was impressed by the photos of different marine mollusks in their native habitats, often engaged in complex feeding activities (especially note Colubraria feeding on a parrot fish through it's mucus bubble). It's very nice to see, for a change, a book dedicated to the living organisms that we as Conchologists often tend to forget when engaging in this hobby. I have ...

Baby Animals (Cube Books) 3 reviews Angela Serena Ildos
White Star, 2004
Just wonderful. Great for kids! The book is small but heavy - it's a high quality print, contaning hundreds of pictures of baby animals by themselves or being cared for by their mothers. The selection is very good, and makes for a great reading with my little kids.

Ramesses II 4 reviews T.G.H. James
White Star, 2003
"Ramesses II" not "Rameses II" In spite of misspelling the title of the book, Amazon.com makes available a large format publication that provides excellent viewing of fine photography and renderings. The details of wall reliefs and murals are rendered exquisitely and hilight otherwise missed opportunities to appreciate the finesse of ancient Egyptian artists. Mr. James' text is extremely readable and in writing the history of ...
