Fifty Wooden Boats: A Catalog of Building Plans, Vol.17 reviews
Woodenboat Magazine

Wooden Boat Publications, 1984

The wooden boat: the highest form of art
5 Stars Some people love working on cars, golfing, or seeing a good game. This reviewer loves ships and boats. I got this book as a house warming gift for a friend who build a massive house. I have to admit the book is amazing and quite informative. Bluntly, if you're a good carpenter with a full work bench of tools, know a lot about basic carpentry construction, and don't mind spending ...

The Gaff Rig Handbook: History, Design, Techniques, Developments5 reviews
John Leather

Wooden Boat Publications, 2001

Brilliant definitive treatise
I thought I understood gaff rig until I got into this incredible book. It truly is the definitive text on the subject. Be warned - this is not necessarily an easy book to read. It is dense, profound stuff, and there are many places that will stop you in your tracks as you read paragraphs over and over, trying to tease out and understand all the multilayered detail. But once it's accomplished, ...

Building Small Boats15 reviews
Greg Rossel

Wooden Boat Publications, 1998

Building Small Boats
This is, quite simply, the most useable and useful book for small boat building which is out there. A legendary teacher at the WoodenBoat School, Greg Rossel uses his years of experience to take the reader through the whole process of constructing a wooden boat. The chapter on lofting alone is worth the price of the whole book. One might consider Chapelle's "Boatbuilding" to be Old Testament: ...

Kayakcraft: Fine Woodstrip Kayak Construction18 reviews
Ted Moores

Wooden Boat Publications, 1999

Kayakcraft: Fine Woodstrip Kayak Construction
This book is a must in any kayak builder's library. Very well written with clear comments on each stage of kayak construction, supplemented with excellent photographs. In addition, one can find in this book a detailed instruction on the stapleless kayak construction method and a miriad of practical tips on, among others, strongback assembly, sanding techniques, decorative methods of stripping and ...

The New Cold-Molded Boatbuilding: From Lofting to Launching5 reviews
Reuel Parker

Wooden Boat Publications, 2005

one of two you must have
I'm a 66 y.o. retiree, working solo, in my second year of building a 34' schooner. I've never built a boat. There is only good news: it's a step-by-step process, the steps are small but many, the harder ones will yield to thinking. DO IT! - you won't regret it. Mr. Parker's book is invaluable, and densely packed with good advice on every page. Buehler's Backyard Boatbuilding also highly ...

Painting & Varnishing (The Woodenboat Series)1 review

Wooden Boat Publications, 1995

Not a sailor
I bought this book because I wanted to know more about wood finishes that would stand up under harsh conditions (specifically, chainsaw-carved yard art). I got some of what I wanted, and I learned more about boat maintenance than I'll ever need to know given that I have never owned even a rowboat. The book is engaging. Interesting side trip into a foreign universe, that of wooden boats and ...

Keeping the Cutting Edge: Setting and Sharpening Hand and Power Saws3 reviews
Harold H. Payson

Wooden Boat Publications, 1985

excellent guide to sharpening
Payson's book is an excellent guide to sharpening all types of saws, from hand to table saw blades. Also covered are old fashioned saws for cutting down trees and bucking them. Japanese and carbide tipped blades are about the only types not covered, but that does not detract from the books utility. Clearly written and illustrated, highly recommended.

Clinker Plywood Boatbuilding Manual15 reviews
Iain Oughtred

Wooden Boat Publications, 2000

Essential Addition to Small Boat Library
This book is a great cross reference to the Hill and Rossel books. Oughred relies on his photographs to convey the boat construction message and the result is a clear instruction manual. Boatbuilding can be confusing to the uninitiated, and Oughred's approach supplements the more detailed written accounts offered in "How to Build Glued-Lapstrake Wooden Boats" by Brooks and Hill and "Building ...

How to Build Glued Lapstrake Wooden Boats8 reviews
John Brooks, Ruth Ann Hill

Wooden Boat Publications, 2004

Best book to answer all your questions
Although I enjoy reading John Gardner's books the most, when it comes time to build this is the book I'll have on my workbench. It's packed with more info than any other book I've seen and answers all those nagging questions. It's by far the best Bible on boat building. The only part about his boat building technique I question is the use of screws, battens, and small blocks of wood to ...

The Marisol Skiff2 reviews
Gifford Jackson

Wooden Boat Publications, 2005

Inspirational
Although this book contains the full set of plans necessary to build the boat, they are not full size. But, at $15 (jan 2008), it is a great inspirational building manual. The seasoned boat builder could easily use the plans to build, but the more faint of heart should probably buy the detailed plans from WoodenBoat. Still, it's a great book to just have as a reminder of that boat you'll ...

How to Build the Gloucester Light Dory: A Classic in Plywood2 reviews
Harold Payson

Wooden Boat Publications, 1986

Classic, but not Complete
If you want to build a Gloucester dory, you need this book AND you also need to order the plans, at additional cost. I am sure that with this book AND the plans, you can build a Gloucester dory!

How to Build the Haven 12 1/2-Footer4 reviews
Maynard Bray

Wooden Boat Publications, 1988

Excellent reference
Great book taking the prospective builder through the construction of this beautiful boat. As good a book on boat construction as I've seen. Check it out with the book, then buy the plans and build it!

How to Build a Wooden Boat12 reviews
David C. McIntosh

Wooden Boat Publications, 1987

Build it Bud's Way!!
The day I first met the late New England boat builder Bud McIntosh he was down in the hold of a schooner's hull setting keel bolts--and singing Homer's Iliad in ancient Greek. He stopped when he saw me peaking through a gap in the planks (probably amused by my mouth hanging open in wonder and awe) and asked: "You like boats?" Well I did, and I was there to ask him a question about planking a ...

Frame, Stem & Keel Repair (The Woodenboat Series)3 reviews

Wooden Boat Publications, 1996

Where to start....
For anyone contemplating buying an old (or newer) wooden boat, this book should be required reading. It provides the basic understanding of how wooden boats are constructed and details repair and restoration of the heart of the wooden boat. The book is written for both the novice and experienced boat owner.

Featherweight Boatbuilding: A Woodenboat Book10 reviews
Henry "Mac" McCarthy

Wooden Boat Publications, 1996

I built this boat!
I would, with out hesitation, recommend this book. Mac does a very good job of relating all the information needed to build this head-turning canoe. Although I built this canoe in just five weeks, Mac provides encouragement and inspiration along the way to keep your motivation high to the end. I built the 12 foot Wee Lassie and have been in that canoe many, many times in the past two years ...

Planking & Fastening (The Woodenboat Series)4 reviews
Peter Spectre, Maynard Bray

Wooden Boat Publications, 1996

Great Book.
I found this book very informative and interesting. I highly suggest reading it entirely before you begin your project in order that you have as good an understanding of these concepts as possible. It is a collection of articles from Woodenboat Magazine specifically about planking and fastening issues. Some of the information may seem esoteric but that's what wooden boat building is. I see that ...

Moving Heavy Things8 reviews
Jan Adkins

Wooden Boat Publications, 2004

A hydraulic jack of a book
A little book about big stuff. How to use knots, ropes, chains, blocks, tackles, wedges, jacks, levers, ramps, motors and even, in worst case scenarios, your muscles, to levitate the lumps of matter that matter to you. Grand piano in a garret? Barrels of flour in a schooner? Cannon on a peak? Adkins is your man. Aptly illustrated by the author.

Herreshoff: And His Yachts

Wooden Boat Publications, 2008

This is a magnificent book of lush images by celebrated photographer Franco Pace. It pays tribute to the work of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, providing an insight into the detail and precision that infused the work of brothers John and Nathanael Herreshoff, of Bristol, Rhode Island. From the very beginning, the company was noted for the ingenuity and excellence of its designs, its construction methods, its manufacturing and business ...
