T.S. Eliot for Sikhs
I am a deeply religious Sikh living in America. The Four Quartets is to me a shining example of a man of deep understanding of God and reality. I have read this poem many times since I first read it back in college. It speaks directly to my soul. There is no passage, no phrase, which does not work for me. I read some sections to my wife when we were first married, and she thought that it ...

Different view on Indonesians' life during early 20th century
Having heard about this great book for a few years, I just managed to get my hand on it and can't let go. :) This book tells the story on the life of Indonesians during Dutch Colonialism. I enjoy this book more than the history book during my school year and help me to relate to what the people are going through during the period. I read the Indonesian version and also took glimpse on the ...

True Sports Hero of Our Time
Many of our sports-crazed world would do well to study and emulate this great man. From the classic Chariots of Fire movie, I wanted to see how Hollywood handled this accurately. From Magusson's research, certainly one can see from actual photos that Liddell was not as thin or attractive as Ian Charleston. Also to my great disappointment, Jason, the American sprinter, never gave Liddell the ...

Great book!
I am compelled to put my five stars on this book mostly to counteract a number of nearly unintelligible one-star reviews by "readers" who apparently were either forced to read the book by a teacher and/or never bothered to finish reading the book. Much as I love her writing I'll admit that this and L'Engle's other books are not for everyone. But if you hate your reading assignment how about ...

Delightful
I was a little leery on reading this book; I finally broke down and bought it. It is a great story, and I love it. Enders Game is defiantly a book I will bring with me into a classroom setting. I am excited to use it, and hopefully others will benefit from it the way I have.

I'm hooked again!!!
I can't begin to tell how perfect this book or this book's hero is. After reading a lot of romance books, some of them quite good, I had given up that I could ever feel the way I did when I first discovered historical romance, about 6-7 years earlier. Books like Whitney my love, Something wonderful, the dangerous gentleman, the hostage, the bride thief, whirlwing wedding, because you're mine, ...

Believe the hype
I kept seeing Ender's Game recommended by others but it seemed like a young adult type book so I moved on several times. I finally couldn't ignore the shear number of 5 star ratings for this book. It lived up to it. I devoured the book in a few days (fast for me.) I was surprised to find that I actually took some things away from this book that I used in dealing with people who work for me. ...

Has lingered for weeks
Ann Cleeves' spare prose is so precise in it's imagery that the setting and characters will stay with you for weeks. By undressing our casual inhumanities, she demonstrates a great depth of understanding about the feelings and thoughts that propel us onward...which is the reason we read crime stories, isn't it? I hope we will see more of this protagonist and the Shetlands.

A real pageturner
The strength of the first 2 books of the series was in the setting and the characters. Abraham's writing has a philosophical bend to it; he uses the novels to study human societies and individuals. I thoroughly enjoyed summer and winter, but it was a slow read, with only a dash of suspense to help one turn the pages. Not so for this book. I stayed up till 5AM last night finishing it. All ...

a perfect novel to dive in deeply and relish
With "Justine", Lawrence Durrell set out to the task of producing the novel matching his times. He wanted "The Alexandria Quartet" to be based on the relativity principle as much as the great authors of the generation before, like Proust, explored the theory of Bergson. According to Durrell, all four parts are to be read as parallel, he call them "siblings" not "sequels", and the separation in ...

More fun with the Melendy family
"The Four-Story Mistake" is the second book in the Melendy quartet, and it's my favorite of the four. In a complete change of scene, Elizabeth Enright moves the Melendys out of their New York City brownstone and transports them to a marvelous old house in the country that has so much character, it seems like a personality in its own right. Picking up from the early autumn after the summer ...

Only book that has made me cry
This is the only book that has made me cry. I cried when Ender died, (although he didn't die his aiua passed on to Peter) the character of Ender died. Through the series I have gotten so attatched to his character unlike any other character in any series. Through his guilt of xenocide, and hard life it was hard to read sometimess. Especially, when he had problems with Novinha in Xenocide, ...

Every day should be Saturday
When I was nine years old I picked up a copy of Elizabeth Enright's "The Melendy Family" on sale for 25 cents at my school Christmas fair, donated by some eighth-grader who evidently felt she had "outgrown" it. I wonder, does anybody ever outgrow the Melendys? "The Melendy Family" was a three-in-one volume comprising "The Saturdays", "The Four Story Mistake", and "Then There were Five". Alas, ...

summa cum laude
After having read Shadow in Summer, which was very good, I was not expecting the next installment in the series to be quite this good. I give it a summa cum laude rating - highest praise. It is hard to describe to those who haven't read it what makes this book so superlative, but it has to do with how the reader is kept on edge by the elements of intrigue and danger to the main sympathetic ...
