Finally, someone has come to shed light ...
We live in a time where it is okay to address certain issues about Cristianity and the Jewishness of Jesus. A couple of decades ago (the other day for that matter) It was not okay. The book that Dr. Young has written is outstanding, most all of the issues that he tackles can not be better said. I've known this for a long time and I know many people did too, but if you don't have the proper ...

A Novel Parallel: Orthodox Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism
The best description of this very organized, concisely thorough work is :"An ideal textbook...a remarkable achievement in its field." Expository Times A parallel history: This parallel history of Judaism and Christianity presents both independent and integral accounts of the first six centuries in the development of both branches of monotheistic Semitic religion (if we disagree with Jan ...

Everyman's Talmud for Everyman (or Woman)
As the subtitle of the book (Major Teachings of the Rabbinic Sages) suggests, Abraham Cohen sets out to introduce his readership to the worldview of classic rabbinic literature. The topics covered by the book are nearly as varied as the topics covered by the Talmud itself - covering everything from ruminations about God, including God's attributes and God's place in the universe. The bulk of ...

One of my favorite Judaica/Biblical commentary books ever
I'm about halfway through the book and already it's one of my favorite Judaiaca and/or Bible commentary books ever (other favorites include Telushkin's Jewish Wisdom and others and Marc Brettler (who wrote the foreword)'s How to Read the Bible). The first chapter (after the introduction), called No Word Unturned, was actually so good I read it twice. It's very dense in the sense that a lot ...

More than Stories
What is the Talmud? Who put it together, and why? If you are curious about those questions, this book is an excellent choice. Rubenstein takes a literary approach to a number of key stories in the Talmud and uses them to examine the Sages of the Babylonian Academies. The only quibble I have with this book is the title: "Rabbinic Stories." Perhaps the reason it was chosen had to do with ...

The most comprehensive 2nd Temple Period anthology
I have been teaching Jewish Studies at the college and high school level for ten years, and this is the most helpful primary source anthology for the 2nd Temple Period. As a primary text anthology, there is little instruction as to what the texts mean, as that is intended to be covered in Schiffman's companion book. But as a teacher, there is no book I use more to prepare lessons, and this ...

A tremendous pleasure to learn with this book
There is a tremendous pleasure in learning with this book. Rabbi Pearl tells stories of the sages, and through them teaches principles of Jewish thought. This work is written so clearly and the stories are told with such great vividness that the ideas come with particular force and conviction. This was Rabbi Pearl's final work. And it represents truly his legacy, a legacy that included deep ...

Invaluable Study of the Development of Rabbinic Judiasm
For those who have wondered how the Jewish religion transformed the practice of animal sacrifice depicted in the Bible to the one we know today, this book is for you. Professor Schiffman writes a careful, thoughtful history of Jewish religious thought from the time of return from Babylon (about 560 B.C.E.) to the closing of the Talmud (about 200 C.E.). Focusing on the Greek and Roman periods, ...

If the People of Israel understood themselves to share a common ancestry as well as a common religion, how could a convert to their faith who did not share their ethnicity fit into the ancient Israelite community? While it is comparatively simple to declare religious beliefs, it is much more difficult to enter a group whose membership is defined in ethnic terms. In showing how the rabbis struggled continually with the dual nature of the ...

institional and textual authority of the rabbis
A fascinating discussion of rabbinic authority in a text-based tradition. In my opinion it built to a great extent on ideas already presented in studies of chatimah literature in halakha by Shelomo Havlin and on the books of Weiss-Halivni. Recommended very highly. See also Maimonides on 'yeridat ha'dorot' by Menachem Kellner who uses the dissertation that was the basis for this book.

Discussing Cultural Influences: Text, Context, and Non-Text in Rabbinic Judaism (Studies in Judaism)

Discussing Cultural Influences contextualizes Rabbinic Judaism by emphasizing that the framers of Rabbinic thought were in conversation with cultures different from their own as much as with their own tradition. In a series of seven essays, presented here for the first time, the authors challenge the reader's assumptions about Judaism in the Second Temple period, late antiquity, and the early medieval era.

Excellent Scholarship, Very Readable
Hoffman begins his analysis of the meaning of male circumcision in Rabbinic Judaism by recounting the attempts in the nineteenth century by the movement in Germany to eliminate circumcision a requirement in Judaism. The effort was largely unsuccessful. This prompts him to study the ritual's public meaning through the history of Judaism. Hoffman admits that his the results of his ...
