Ruffians7 reviews
Tim Green

Grand Central Publishing, 1999

Professional Sports Exposed
Ruffians by Tim Green also exposed the dark world of professional sports. The world of sex, drugs and alcohol use by professional athletes. The main character in the book, "Clay" seems like a nice normal guy before he enters the pros and gets mixed up with "Max." Let's hope that some of the pros out there don't cheat on their significant others as much as Clay did in this book.

Wonderfully Written, Intimate Account of Ruffian and the Horseracing Industry
Nack's personal account of his life in the horseracing industry is a perfect backdrop for this intimate, well-written account of Ruffian. Nack's insight and research is top-notch given his perspective as a reporter covering horseracing for Newsday in the early 70's; we meet his friends and experience first-hand the people who surround these wonderful animals - from Alfred Vanderbilt to Frank ...

The Billy Ruffian: The Bellerophon and the Downfall of Napoleon10 reviews
David Cordingly

Bloomsbury USA, 2004

Unusual biography
Instead of the usual biography of a famous captain or battle, Mr. Cordingly treats us to the life of a famous ship of the line - Bellerophon. From a protracted birth in the slips of the Medway, through the highs and lows of the American and European wars, to an ignominious return to her birthplace, we read the history of the Georgian Navy as written by her commanders, officers and crew, The ...

The Licorice Daughter: My Year with Ruffian15 reviews
Lyn Lifshin

Texas Review Press, 2006

Don't Miss It!!
For any racehorse enthusiast, this is a must read. Lyn has put into poetry a beautiful, yet heart-wrenching story of this incredible filly. It only takes about a hour to read, but the words will stay with you for a lifetime. I saw the race "live", and I'll never forget it. Long live the memory of Ruffian!

Ruffians, Yakuza, Nationalists: The Violent Politics of Modern Japan, 1860-1960
Eiko Maruko Siniawer

Cornell University Press, 2008

Violence and democracy may seem fundamentally incompatible, but the two have often been intimately and inextricably linked. In Ruffians, Yakuza, Nationalists, Eiko Maruko Siniawer argues that violence has been embedded in the practice of modern Japanese politics from the very inception of the country's experiment with democracy. As soon as the parliament opened its doors in 1890, brawls, fistfights, vandalism, threats, and intimidation quickly ...

Ruffian: Burning from the Start62 reviews
Jane Schwartz

Ballantine Books, 2002

Excellent writing about one of the great race horses ever!
Anyone who ever watched this filly race knew what a special sight it was, to see her pulling away from the others, compelled to race. She had an excellent trainer but I happen to believe she also had an instinctive drive to use every bit of power and heart she had. This book chronicles it all, from start to finish and it'll capture the heart of both horse lovers and anyone who simply likes to ...

Barbaro, Smarty Jones and Ruffian: The People's Horses12 reviews
Linda G. Hanna

Middle Atlantic Press, 2008

Book Captures the Spirit of These Great Horses!!
I purchased this book in great anticipation of savoring the stories of three wonderful horses whose careers I have followed from youth(with Ruffian) to adulthood with Smarty Jones and Barbaro. The book more than surpassed my expectations. The writer is a natural who draws you into the times and the people...each story brought tears to my eyes but in a good way for the wonderful magic and sport ...

Ruffian (Tempo books)1 review
Joan Campbell

Grosset & Dunlap, 1977

Wonderful book
But then, I am a collector of Ruffian. This is much more a children's book than several of her other books, but has some photos I'd never seen as well as some graphs I didn't know. All of the info was also available through other books on the list, but it's a great book to have if you collect Ruffian, anyhow.

Ruffian (Thoroughbred Legends, Number 13)4 reviews
Milton Toby

Eclipse Press, 2002

Ruffian
Ruffian, a wonderful story of the magnificent and one of the most loved fillies of all time. Her short, but brilliant carear was charmed by win after win, record after record. No filly could match her long solid stride and fast stride. No filly could outdistance her or even challenge her. After winning the New York Filly Triple Crown the fated match race with Kentucky Derby winner Foolish ...

In six days, Silas Mudd will celebrate his 100th birthday. But there is no doubt that Silas’s son and his two daughters will be at the party. Best outfits and good form are what they think Silas wants served up, and they dare not ...
