The Penguin Historical Atlas of the Vikings (Hist Atlas) 12 reviews John Haywood
Penguin (Non-Classics), 1995
Best Resource for Beginning Scandophiles This atlas is one of the best possible collections of our knowledge about early Scandinavia. Although the term "Viking" is in the title, hopefully by reading this book you will learn that there was a whole lot more to primitive, expansionist Scandia. The book also does a great job of talking about all the players in Norden, rather than just the traditional trio. I'm a Scandinavian Studies student ...

Beowulf: A New Verse Translation (Bilingual Edition) 244 reviews
W. W. Norton & Company, 2001
"fate hovered near, unknowable but certain" (line 2421) Over the years I've read several English renderings of Beowulf. But I don't think I've ever really appreciated the haunting beauty of the thing until reading Seamus Heaney's translation. In his introductory essay, Heaney says that he's always loved the Beowulf poet's "foursquareness about the utterance," the "undeluded quality" of his "sense of the world." In translating from the Anglo-Saxon, ...

Arabian Sands (Penguin Classics) 39 reviews Wilfred Thesiger
Penguin Classics, 2008
archetypal saga of exploration and adventure Not only a magnificent travelogue chronicling travels in in a harsh, surreal landscape, here we see the age-old yearning of the explorer to discover the things which cannot be found among the comforts and conveniences of civilization, chief of which is a knowledge of what kind of man he will prove to be when tested to his utmost. Though Thesiger never promotes his undertakings as spiritual ...

Beowulf: A Verse Translation (Norton Critical Editions) 6 reviews
W. W. Norton, 2002
Much more than an old parchment... Most people probably think Beowulf is still read merely because it's old. Well, it is old. Wow it's old. Hoary and whiskery old. Best estimates place the composition somewhere between the 7th and 10th centuries A.D. One can speak in terms of millenia when speaking of Beowulf. Though it's old - have I mentioned that it's old - age is definitely not the sole, or even the best, reason for reading ...

The Great Scandinavian Baking Book 17 reviews Beatrice A. Ojakangas
University of Minnesota Press, 1999
Scandinavian Cook book I'm very satisfied with my purchase of this cookbook. Being of Norwegian decent, it was very nice to see recipies from my fathers homeland. I've already made 2 things out of the cookbook, and can't wait to go home and make something for my father to bring back some memories to him.

The Far Traveler: Voyages of a Viking Woman 11 reviews Nancy Marie Brown
Harvest Books, 2008
Fascinating, solid I am just a general reader who happens to enjoy well-written history. I've never read much at all about the Vikings but the NY Times review of THE FAR TRAVELER was enticing and I was not let down by its promise. Nancy Marie Brown has reached back to a place and people obscured by time, doing a decent job of erasing some of the fog and cold desolation that obscure the Dark Ages and Medieval ...

In Cod We Trust: Living the Norwegian Dream 2 reviews Eric Dregni Dregni
Univ Of Minnesota Press, 2008
Learn more about yourself from Eric among the Norwegians I came across "In Cod We Trust" while working on a newsletter for a Scandinavian specialty store and was attracted to Dregni's account basically because I loved the title. After sitting down with the merchandise, I read it straight through -- fascinated because his book ultimately tells me how many Norwegian tendencies we retain in Minnesota, or, as described in his book, "Norway's colony in ...

She was educated at Park High School for Girls, Birkenhead, and Newnham College, Cambridge, where she took Firsts in English and Archaeology. She received her Ph.D in 1940 after three years of research under Professor and Mrs. Chadwick into the pagan beliefs of Scandinavia. In my opinion, her works rank amongst the best that ...

Rick Steves' Scandinavia 12 reviews Rick Steves
Avalon Travel Publishing, 2008
Indispensable in Scandinavia I just returned from a two-week adventure in Scandinavia, where I hung out in Oslo, Copenhagen, and Stockholm. I had a great time seeing the places where my predecessors came from, and I can attribute much of my trip's success to the "Rick Steves' Scandinavia 2005" guidebook. Mr. Steves has created an excellent and portable all-in-one travel resource for this region. It's well organized, and ...

Kitchen of Light: The New Scandinavian Cooking 16 reviews Andreas Viestad
Artisan, 2007
Simple ingredients with fantastic results! I've been cooking through this book for the past two months, and have yet to find a recipe that disappoints. What I love is that it uses simple ingredients, but combines them in ways I hadn't thought of before. His broccoli dish with capers and anchovies is a new standard preparation for broccoli in our household now, and the seared fish with carmelized onions is spectacular, as is his roast ...

The Vikings: Revised Edition 12 reviews Else Roesdahl
Penguin (Non-Classics), 1999
Very nice book! I chose to buy this book because I wanted to learn more about this fascinating people. This book is well written and easy to read. There is another book called "A history of the vikings" by Gywn Jones that I do recommend only if you can read, like, 1,535 facts in one page. It is a good book but overwhelming on some readers. I'll go with this book by Else Roesdahl. Fantastic book!

Beowulf (Broadview Literary Texts Series) 3 reviews Anonymous
Broadview Press, 1999
Accessible and Accurate RM Liuzza's long-awaited translation of the Old English epic is a wonderful way for people who do not read Old English to get to know this poem. Liuzza preserves much of the feel of Beowulf, from the rhythm to the alliteration. Students of Old English will also find the book a useful tool for checking their own understanding of the poem. The appendices in the back are very useful, and ...
