Cyrus the Unsinkable Sea Serpent10 reviews
Bill Peet

Houghton Mifflin, 1982

One of Bill Peet's best stories
This charming story is certain to bring a smile to your face. I love it even more than my son does. The drawings are delightfully done. Bill Peet is one of the very rare children's book authors who are able to produce both an excellent story and great pictures. All of his books are good, but some are better than others; Cyrus is one of his best.

Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Sharks and Other Sea Monsters40 reviews
Robert Sabuda, Matthew Reinhart

Candlewick, 2006

A must for your pop-up collection
I'm an avid pop up collector (or my little boy is, but I get as excited as he does when we get another one) and this is as wonderful as the other Sabuda books. It's holding up well even though I have to pretend to attack my son whenever we get to the huge set of shark jaws; these books are not as fragile as you'd think.

Tales from the Odyssey #3: Sirens and Sea Monsters (Tales from the Odyssey)4 reviews
Mary Pope Osborne

Hyperion Book CH, 2003

The best in the series!
We read all these books in the series together as a family. This one was our favorite. My boys couldn't wait for bedtime so they could hear what would happen next in the story. These books offer enough action to keep one's interest, young and old. I recommend all the books in the series. We can't wait for #6!

The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove109 reviews
Christopher Moore

Harper Paperbacks, 2004

Christopher Moore
The author hasn't written a bad book yet. Completely amusing and the characters are well developed as normal everyday people. Very relatable. If a regular person ended up in the situations the characters do, they would react the same. Lust Lizard is one of my favorites.

Stargazer (Land of Elyon)5 reviews
Patrick Carman

Scholastic Press, 2008

One if by land, two if by sea
"Suspended under a twilight canopy We'll search the clouds for a star to guide us" (The Fifth Dimension - Up, Up and Away") NOW we're talking! The fifth book in the Land of Elyon series is by far the best with regards to plot, adventure and characterization. It's also steeped in religious imagery, as the young heroine receives inspiration and guidance from Elyon (Good) while being ...

The Monsters of Templeton61 reviews
Lauren Groff

Voice, 2008

Monsters and Ghosts and Scandal, Oh My!
I heard wonderful things about "The Monsters of Templeton" and was very excited to begin reading. The premise is wonderful - Girl comes home pregnant with Professor's baby after trying to kill his wife with a plane in Alaska. Throw in a hippie-turned-evangalist mother and a quest to discover the true story of the small, New York town's founder and you have an imaginative debut novel. I had no ...

The Terror: A Novel222 reviews
Dan Simmons

Little, Brown and Company, 2007

Fantastic story, and much of it true
The basic story of two ships that set sail from England during the age of exploration to find a northwest passage is true. That neither ship was heard from again is also a part of history. As to what happened to the two crews and their ship, this story purports a possible explanation that is both fantastical and horrible. If you enjoy this, the Hyperion series is a must-read too. Dan ...

Monsters of the Sea12 reviews
Richard Ellis

The Lyons Press, 2006

Cryptozoological Writing at its Finest
Actually, as a writer, Ellis leaves something to be desired. He can be a little repetitive and disorganized at times (but is that more a criticism of him or his editor?). However, the content of this book is incredibly interesting, and it is presented very well. Ellis maintains a very good degree of subjectivity, considering the strange matters that he is discussing in the book. The topics, ...

Field Guide to Lake Monsters, Sea Serpents, and Other Mystery Denizens of the Deep11 reviews
Loren Coleman, Patrick Huyghe, ...

Tarcher, 2003

Sea Serpents, Lake Monsters and Other Beasts from the Deep
From the authors of "The Field Guide to Bigfoot, Yeti and Other Mystery Primates Worldwide", this book tackles the various sea serpents, lake monsters and other aquatic cryptids in the same manner. It's not exactly an in-depth scientific survey, but it is a pretty good introduction to the phenomena, and it does try to cover a vast array of hypothetical species. We begin with a history of the sea ...

The best book ever!
This book is a great book for kids who like monsters, because it's about a monster who tries to take over the sea and land with a whole lot of floods. I really like this book and I think you would too.

Haunted Lakes: Great Lakes Ghost Stories, Superstitions and Sea Serpents9 reviews
Frederick Stonehouse

Lake Superior Port Cities, 1997

can't stop reading
Once I started to read this book I had to keep on reading until my eyes are so tired. Thanks to Mr. Stonehouse, I am once again loving history of these great ship wrecks .. Mr. Stonehouse sure dug up a lot of interesting stories. Some of them I just find them to be funny and some of them got my heart racing for more. I am hoping Mr. Stonehouse dont stop writing stories of Haunted Lakes. I just ...

The Water Horse9 reviews
Dick King-Smith

Yearling, 2007

This is a cute book on 'Nessie'
I have to say the advertisements for the movie of The Water Horse prompted me to look to the book it was based on and what a cutie of a book it is - Set in 1930's Scotland, after a huge storm a family goes to the shore to see what has washed up - and they found something very strange - maybe something alive? an egg? what is it? Well the kids take it inside and place it in the tub with water - ...
