Eric Carle

Mantra Lingua, 2004

Great book!
Love this story. My son already had Panda Bear Panda Bear, and loved that.. We bought this one, he loves it equally as much. He is 2 and loves the animals at the end of the story, and loves that fact that he can "read" it to us after he learns the animals. Great book, we are going to be buying the others by the this author.

Seabiscuit: An American Legend650 reviews
Laura Hillenbrand

Ballantine Books, 2002

Hillenbrand is a fine writer
I actually wish I'd read this book before I saw the movie. The story was captivating and rare enough that reading about it first would have been a treat to savor for weeks. In my opinion, this was one of the few cases in which the movie was almost as good as the book. In any case, Hillenbrand has done an exemplary job at putting together the ultimate unlikely hero story. Perhaps the greatest ...

Friends and Lovers273 reviews
Eric Jerome Dickey

Signet, 1998

Still my Favorite!
Yes out of all of his books and others this book is still one of my favorite books of all time, I can't count how many times I have read this book over and over. I think the fact that it was one of the first books I fell in love with that is why it will always remain near and dear to me. Eric is such a skillful story teller that I fall in love with his novels, he weaves humor throughout the story ...

Lonesome Dove410 reviews
Larry McMurtry

Pocket Books, 1986

Read it, love it, leave it
I recently reread this book after 24 years and it still holds up, in fact I consider it to be one of the five best novels I have ever read. I can add nothing to the glowing reviews you'll see here, I envy those who are about to read this book for the first time. I would only add one caveat; if you wish to continue to cherish the characters you will come to know in this story, please avoid the ...

Wild Magic (Immortals)275 reviews
Tamora Pierce

Random House Books for Young Readers, 1997

Great series for young girls
I first read Wild Magic and the other three books in the series when I was much younger, but I love to reread them now and again because they're a classic for me. Tamora Pierce crafted wonderful characters, including a host of strong female characters who can serve as good role models for young girls. I highly recommend this book for any fantasy-oriented teens. It has magic, adventure, and ...

Ella Enchanted1164 reviews
Gail Carson Levine

Scholastic Inc., 1997

amazingly fantastical!
I know many of you have already seen the movie. I know I was a big fan of the movie with Anne Hathaway... and that cute guy that played Prince Charmont. But do not let that deter you from reading this gem of a story. The movie only gives you a glimpse (and a small one at that) as to what is really between the covers of Ella Enchanted. Although geared for younger readers, I was taken by this ...

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4)5186 reviews
J.K. Rowling

Listening Library, 2000

Harry Potter grows up
In my review of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1) I called it a gentle coming-of-age story with a twist of magic. Well, little Harry Potter is growing up. Year 4 of the HP chronicles is when author J. K. Rowling realized that her audience was growing older (adults as well as kids were reading the series intently) and more mature (her young readers were growing up with Harry and ...

Dealing With Dragons (Enchanted Forest Chronicles)306 reviews
Patricia C. Wrede

Scholastic, 1992

Adorable and Witty!!
What a joy to read this novel! I laughed from the opening pages! Wrede has an adorable wit that seasons every page, laughing in the face of traditional fairy tales. Tradition and what's "supposed" to be done in the fairy kingdom is just not what our main character Cimorene wants to do. What starts out as a quest to be happy turns into a bit of a mystery for her and her dragon to solve and becomes ...

I would highly recommend this book about WWII in the Pacific. Sledge has a remarkable way of writing that makes you feel what he felt.

I Have Lived A Thousand Years: Growing Up In The Holocaust179 reviews
Livia Bitton-Jackson

Simon Pulse, 1999

Brilliant
This young-adult book is not the first Holocaust memoir I've read, but it is perhaps the most brilliant. Not an easy read, of course, none of them are. I had to put it down several times and go off and do something else to forestall an overdose of grief and anger. Especially affecting is the fact that she was but thirteen when her family was shipped to Auschwitz. Only the infamous Dr. Mengele ...

Cosmos166 reviews
Carl Sagan

Ballantine Books, 1985

The Sage of NOW & the future
Carl Sagan was (sadly not an IS) the prime conveyor of knowledge of our Universe.. His ability to convey to the common man how "Things worked" has never been surpassed. Simply put... He had his own way of sharing this knowledge, that will never be surpassed by anyone.... His imprint is here in this "COSMOS"... and there isn't any more definitive book or other wise that is available to the ...

Smart, funny, ironic and touching

She's still dealing with the fallout of a broken heart, dating her academic rival, and dealing with an anonymous and accurate school gossip ezine. Mattimeo: A Tale From Redwall215 reviews
Brian Jacques

Ace Books, 1999

EXCELLENT! 10/10!
This is either the best or the second best Redwall book. It's the direct sequel to the Original Redwall, so there will be a lot of familier characters. Complete with 3 huge battles, a cruel monster that lurks in the dark, and an evil slaver named Slager, this book is ultimate, and I highly reccomend it!

Myst: The Book of Atrus196 reviews
Rand Miller

Hyperion Books, 1995

Myst: The Book of Atrus
It really seems only fitting that a video game about books would have a series of books published in its name. For some reason when such books were first coming out I was sort of skeptical about their quality. I truly am glad I overcame this and decided to pick up the Myst books. I was an early enough adopter to be able to get all the hardcover texts and they are all beautifully designed. ...

How to Survive the Loss of a Love173 reviews
Melba Colgrove, Harold H. Bloomfield, ...

Bantam Dell Pub Group (Trd), 1991

Meaningful Book
This is a well-written book by informed, highly educated experts; authors who know their subject and the needs of their readers. They speak to those of us who need help, whether we feel like reading the entire book today or a chapter at a time. If we are unable to focus or too overcome after tragedy or betrayal, the text is written in short, succinct bites, so easily understood that a paragraph ...

Lucky Man (Random House Large Print (Cloth/Paper))227 reviews
Michael J. Fox

Random House Large Print, 2002

Yup.
Here's how pervasive the Michael J. Fox phenom has been: I saw only one episode of Family Ties, was dragged by my peer group to Back to the Future, and have never seen Spin City. Yet I still knew, before getting this book, That MJF was from Canada, the names of his wife and each of his four children, and that he had Parkinson's. I told myself I was reading this book for the serious, noncurable ...

A Ring of Endless Light203 reviews
Madeleine L'Engle

Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing Group, 1995

Loved It!!
I loved this book and I would recommend it to girls from the ages 10 and up. This was a good story to connect to your life or the lives of the people around you. The things that happen to Vicky in A Ring of Endless Light might happen or may have happened to the reader. Therefore the plot of the story is believable. I would like to read another story by this author because I loved how thorough ...

The Lords of Discipline178 reviews

A Citadel Grad Reviewing "The Lords of Discipline"
Just a few days after I was admitted to attend The Citadel, over a decade ago, my mother picked up this book and read it cover to cover in no time at all. A couple days later she handed it to me, wishing that I would read it... and decide to attend college elsewhere. I read the book cover to cover, enthralled and fascinated the whole way through, and when I finished the last page my resolve to ...
