More meaty than any "self-help" book, more helpful too!
I'm a reasonably successful professional, wife, and mother who has never had any problems with most of the things discussed in depth in this book (drug addiction, alcoholism, smoking, weight problems, obsessions, gambling, etc). The reason I bought the book was for the discussions of self-management. They've been very thought provoking for me. I have trouble with setting goals and achieving ...

Scholarly, insightful, and accessible
Jonathon Brown has created a book that works in both the home and the classroom. Written as a text for upper-level psychology classes in self-psychology, it manages to span the usual gap between 'informative' and 'engaging.' An excellent read for the interested layperson and an invaluable resource for the academic. Bravo!

Great information and songs, great intervention, great outcomes!
There are two CD's in this set. The first one gives an overview of the original program (37 minutes) and tips for use (5 minutes). I recommend putting headsets on parents, teachers, caregivers and even colleagues--it is a great introduction to the program. The second CD has 15 songs-- the authors provide an "engine changer key" on each song to help develop treatment plans and it is easy for ...

Interesting Case Study
The treatise provides an interesting case study of the inner workings of professional self-regulation, which is practiced widely in the USA for all of the "learned professions," as well as some that are more mundane. Through litigation and discovery, the author challenged the architectural profession's licensing examination. The controversial design exam was abolished nationwide approximately 1 ...

A Much Needed Manual for this Serious Problem
Access to gambling has never been greater. Internet gambling, the poker explosion, most states running lotteries is just some of the new temptations that lead some to serious gambling addiction. Treatment of problem gamblers has had a low success rate. Joseph W Ciarrocchi has put in one book clinical wisdom and research into a treatment package aimed at developing the skills for successful ...

Awesome resource for parents
I got this book on the recommendation from a friend for my son who has some sensory integration issues. This book does a fabulous job of explaining sensory integration and the nervous system to those who may have never had any knowledge or understanding of these topics before. It has really helped me understand what is happening with my son and how to handle it. I love the real life examples ...

Finally!
It's about time! In all the years I've been dealing with children, I have never found a book that explains childrens' behavior in such a clear and understanding way. The book takes you through a number of chapters, each dealing with a different aspect of behavior. Bilmes does a wonderful job illustrating these in a clear manner while providing the reader with charts and tables. My favorite ...

Enthusiastically recommended picturebook, especially for public and elementary school libraries.
Written and illustrated by school-based occupational therapist Jennifer Veenendall, Arnie and His School Tools: Simple Sensory Solutions That Build Success is a children's picturebook about Arnie, a young boy with sensory modulation difficulties - that is, he's a "mover". His body needs to move, and his hands need to be busy, which makes it hard to sit still in school and pay attention to his ...

An exceptionally thorough, well written study
I found this book exceptionally engaging and fascinating. I have read much about the development of affective, cognitive, psycho-sexual, self and gender development, and wanted to learn more about the physiological and anatomical correlates to the observable behaviors in babies and children, and this book was 100% satisfying. The author painstakingly discusses Bowlby, Ainsworth, Spitz and ...

A fresh look at the issues of childhood
This is a thoughtful and well-written description of life at the famous Summerhill school in England, as seen by someone who worked as a houseparent there for nine years. However, it is much more than an account of what life in "the happiest school in the world" is like - Appleton grapples with many of the issues that the concept of giving children freedom and respect raises. The section on ...

Towards a Better Model
As a lay reader in the fields of psychology, I can only say that Shapiro presents a model of behaviour dynamics that is not only a vast improvement over neurochemical models, but is not at all inconsistent with them. The proposals are articulate, concise, and immediately proven through observation's new perspective. Anyone looking at the causes of neurosis, psychosis, or any mental illness should ...

The nuances of America and the world's growing waistline and obesity problem.
Will Power can only do so much - there's a point where temptation can break people. "Dieting, Overweight, and Obesity: Self-Regulation in a Food-Rich Environment" examines why self-regulation is such a difficult thing for so many people in America and the World. The World Health Organization has declared Obesity a global epidemic and author Wolfgang Stroebe, a professor of social psychology, ...

How to Relax, REALLY!
AT LAST!! FINALLY!! A practical approach! Dr. Davis has plowed through all the fluff and mystery of the average book on the subject of relaxing. His is a direct, straightforward approach; what we really want, instead of the often confusing psycho-babble of books covering this topic. I look forward to future books by Dr.Davis.

Hooray for Feeling Terrific!
At last a book that spells out the way mental health should be defined: not by the absence of particular pathological symptoms alone but when the whole person, biologically, socially, cognitively, and spiritually is integrated into a life-affirming homeostasis and "feeling terrific." This book goes beyond the idea of simply alleviating the symptoms of depression. This is an example of real mental ...

Ordered this directly form Zero to Three Publishers. As a lay person, but fairly experienced with sensory integration, I found this book EXTREMELY helpful. Even the anecdotes illustrate approaches we may have tried and why they didn't work, and what might. It is a bit heavy on the jargon--I suspect it is written for OTs, but please give it a shot if you have a child with an unintegrated ...

A huge amount of information presented in a systematic way. I bought two workbooks. The other by Scott Spradlin. Both have their strong points. Spradlins is simple and clear and an excellent first choice. It provides a selection of methods which would be useful to anyone. This volume has significantly more detail and much more indepth discussions. While it might be a bit overwhelming, it has so ...

changing the way we think of infant-parent interactions
This book and this theory provide a comprehensive framework for understanding both infant/human development AND infant-parent relationships. More importantly, the book suggests what exactly it is that clinicians are or strive to be doing as they implement infant-parent psychotherapy and other infant mental health interventions with high risk families. This book brought together years of my own ...

Provides solid ground for psychotherapists
Allan Schore's books provide evidence of the most concrete kind for the benefits of long-term psychotherapy. With the advent of managed care and the hyperactive sales and advertising of psychotropic medication, not only ordinary consumers but psychotherapists themselves begin to believe their work is unnecessary at best. These two volumes are a collection of papers that bring together evidence ...
