A Short Guide to Writing About Biology (Short Guides Series) 5 reviews Jan A. Pechenik
Longman, 2006
An essential for all students. As a university professor teaching budding biologists, I've found this book to be excellent. As the other reviewer said, I wished I had this book when I was a student. I, too, had to learn things the long and hard way. Pechinik has done a great service to science students. Let's hope we see more good writing out of this next generation of young scientists.

A Short Course in Photography: An Introduction to Photographic Technique (6th Edition) 7 reviews Barbara London, Jim Stone
Prentice Hall, 2005
Perfect for the beginner student of photography This book is the text used at Arapahoe Community College located in Colorado for the beginning photography course. Material is presented in a logical order that can be clearly understood. In my case, I am taking the course as part of a study program to fill gaps in knowledge that I have not been able to fill through self study. The course includes black and white film; slr cameras; and darkroom ...

The Norton Anthology of Short Fiction 12 reviews R. V. Cassill
W. W. Norton, 2005
Great anthology, but one minor complaint about this edition Yet another wonderful Norton anthology, but I have only one disappointment: this "shorter seventh edition" excludes "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, which was in the "shorter sixth edition." This is a classic short story and I can't quite get my head around as to why they chose to omit this of all stories from this edition. :-( This was one (of many) reasons I ordered this book-- I didn't ...

A Really Short History of Nearly Everything 619 reviews Bill Bryson
Doubleday Canada, 2008
A valuable service to society - don't quibble over facts I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I'm not normally a "deep" reader, so I really appreciated Mr. Bryson's effort to make these subjects more accessible. In fact, after reading this, I was inspired to take another look at some of the more challenging titles in this genre. Therein is the real value of this book, from my perspective. He opens a door to us who tend to be a bit intimidated by the ...

A Short Guide to Writing about Film (Short Guides Series) 8 reviews Timothy Corrigan
Longman, 2006
I've looked at clouds from both sides now One thing I can say is I enjoy a good film. O.K. if it moves I'll watch it. But until I read this book I really was just looking with out seeing.
It is nice to have this guide confirm what one knows as common sense. Probably because the guide is designed to take you from ground zero to a level of appreciation and allow you to convey your opinion intelligently.
If you have an earlier edition ...

The Best American Short Stories 2007 (The Best American Series (TM)) 21 reviews
Houghton Mifflin, 2007
What a wonderful book! The best book I have read in a long time. All of the stories stay with you after you read them and make you think about them and what they had to tell. With some of them I didn't like the style they were written in but that is why it is a collection, it cannot cater to everybodies tastes. With others I was so taken away that I am trying to find more from their authors and also trying to learn ...

The Oxford Book of American Short Stories 5 reviews
Oxford University Press, USA, 1994
A solid sampling of U.S. stories "The Oxford Book of American Short Stories," edited by Joyce Carol Oates, is an impressive anthology. The editor herself is well-known as a master writer of short stories, so you know that she has insights into the genre. This is a truly sweeping anthology. The authors (56 altogether) range chronologically from Washington Irving (1783-1859) to Pinckney Benedict (b. 1964). Many of the "giants" of ...

Simple and complete. This book will tell you exactly how to conduct an action research project in your school or classroom. It presents a variety of ideas for data and data collection, and describes how to analyze qualitative data. the most important chapter for me was the chapter that described how to use ...

The Art of the Short Story 5 reviews Dana Gioia, R. S. Gwynn
Longman, 2005
Excellent Collection This collection has a nice variety of authors and stories. There are unmistakable classics like Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery," Ernest Hemingway's "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" and James Baldwin's "Sonny's Blues" but also stories by several authors I had never been introduced to before. The result is a fascinating range of styles and perspectives which make the book a compelling and inspiring ...

The Vintage Book of Contemporary American Short Stories 9 reviews
Vintage, 1994
Mr. Wolff sure can pick 'em! Tobias Wollf, himself an excellent practitioner of the short story, does not include a work of his own in this wonderful collection (save a very thoughtful introduction). This is one of the most well edited collections of contemporary short stories on the market. It may be a few years old by now, but most of the "must read" writers, as well as surprisingly good lesser-knowns are included. ...

The Brain: A Very Short Introduction 4 reviews Michael O'Shea
Oxford University Press, USA, 2003
A great introduction This is one of the best books in the VSI series, and I've read well over thirty by now. It gives a very good introduction to the basic neuroanatomy of the brain, and explains many important brain functions. The book is intended for laypeople, but even those (like me) who are familiar with the subject can benefit from reading it. Oftentimes neuroscience textbook overwhelm with details, and it is ...

Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies 15 reviews Bartolome de Las Casas
Penguin Classics, 1999
Essential Reading "A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies" is a powerful written protest against the Spanish treatment of the American Indians. Bartolome de las Casas, a Dominican friar, witnessed first-hand the colonization of the Americas by the Spaniards, and felt it his duty to document the atrocities. He dedicated "short account" to King Philip II, in the hope that once he was aware of the ...

Short Fiction: Classic and Contemporary 2 reviews Charles H. Bohner, Lyman Grant
Prentice Hall, 2005
Very good short fiction collection I've been impressed with this short fiction collection since way back in my undergrad days when the fourth edition was used in one of my classes. Now that I'm teaching college myself, I actually use the sixth edition in my introduction to literature class. The selection of stories is quite good - the book includes a good selection of American, British, and multicultural authors, multiple ...

Short Guide to Writing About History, A (6th Edition) (Short Guides Series) 7 reviews Richard A. Marius, Melvin E. Page
Longman, 2006
Extremely helpful book Marius has written an extremely readable and informative book on the writing of history. He proceeds from showing readers what questions to ask in doing historical research into types of historical writing can be done, from discriptive to argumentitive. However, the most useful part of the book is the chapter on sources and writing. He skillfully shows readers how to choose a topic and narrow ...

I work in medical records and transcribe dictations and this has really helped me a lot in this area being that I have no medical terminology knowledge at all. I love the CD that comes with it, you can take test over and over on it. It's awesome.
