American Psychiatric Association

American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc., 2000

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV-TR
This book is one textbook that will stay with me throughout my coursework. It is very helpful in understanding mental issues and how to decide proper diagnosis. It is well written and easy to navigate. I definitely recommend also getting DSM made easy with this book as the case examples really are helpful.

Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga, Book 4)2790 reviews
Stephenie Meyer

Little, Brown Young Readers, 2008

Its a good book! Quit whining!
I have just looked over a few reviews and read various people moaning about the wrong message being sent and such...So I wanted to defend it a little! I thought the book was an excellent read, and that its not the job of the author to give a "message". Thats a job for philosophers and preachers. No one asks Stephen Spielberg for a "message" in his movies. Sometimes there is one, sometimes not, ...

Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time1232 reviews
Greg Mortenson, David Oliver Relin

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2007

Unexpected emotional moments
I heard much about this book; many have written reviews about this book. I expected a heroic story about white man goes to brown country, sees horrible plight, saves brown people. It is about the journey of Greg Mortenson - but in his journey you "see" the people of Pakistan (and little of Afghanistan.) And yes, you also see Greg's personal struggles to understand and navigate cultures so ...

Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We Do (and What It Says About Us)16 reviews
Tom Vanderbilt

Knopf, 2008

I didn't know that!
A fascinating book! Every page is full of interesting things I didn't know (and never thought to ask). What sort of "safety features" actually make driving more dangerous? Why does the Los Angeles traffic control system take account of the Hebrew calendar? How do cows function as mental speed bumps in Delhi? What feature do left turners share in Pittsburg and Beijing? Reading it will give you a ...

The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism27 reviews
Andrew Bacevich

Metropolitan Books, 2008

Paying the price for a distorted idea of "freedom"
When I read books like this one about America's descent into empire, the threshold question for me is always, to what extent does the author blame George W. Bush (or related bugaboos like Cheney, Rumsfeld, John Yoo, the Weekly Standard, etc.) for the state of the nation and the world today. For while all those worthies do deserve no small measure of vilification, the baseline insight for coming ...

Yes!: 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive56 reviews
Noah J. Goldstein, Steve J. Martin, ...

Free Press, 2008

Clear A Spot On Your Bookshelf!
As a corporate director of human resources, the bulk of my day-to-day existence is convincing people - whether subordinate or superior - to do what I believe is best for the organization. I have just finished the new book, "Yes!" Three things in this great book stand out for me. 1. Real world case studies in the actual business arenas. 2. Contains a wealth of techniques that are easily ...

The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals445 reviews
Michael Pollan

Penguin, 2007

Calling all Corn People - READ THIS BOOK!
I read this book a little while ago and didn't have time to review it, but the essential messages keep popping into my consciousness as I go about my day-to-day life. Before reading this book, for example, I had never realized that Corn has cunningly taken over the world and turned us all into "Corn People." Pollan's simple plan - to make three meals - turns into an exploration of all things ...

The Way of the World: A Story of Truth and Hope in an Age of Extremism18 reviews
Ron Suskind

Harper, 2008

How Do You Spell Impeachable Offense ??
Have mercy!! What to say. Saw the author in an inteview say it's written like a movie. True enough. It's a screenplay, shouldn't be any problem getting it into film. Only thing is, maybe where it belongs is on the committee where Rep. Kucinich's articles of impeachment are twisting in the wind. Now, about the book. It's beautifully written, incredibly finely woven, and perhaps the most ...

Twilight (Twilight, Book 1)2130 reviews
Stephenie Meyer

Little, Brown Young Readers, 2005

About three things I was absolutely positive:
First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of me---and I didn't know how dominant that part might be----that yearned for his undivided attention. (among other things) And third, I was uncondionally and irrevocably in love with him.

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down210 reviews
Anne Fadiman

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1998

What else can I add? Except this is my favorite book, ever.
If anyone's been patient enough to read all hundred-plus reviews up to this point, they already know what this book is about, how well-written it was, how well researched, and how terribly humane. All I can add is that, though I read (well, start, at any rate) about a hundred books a year, and have been doing so for about three decades now, this is the single best book I've ever read.

I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell264 reviews
Tucker Max

Citadel Press, 2006

Hilarious!
This book was entirely too funny! Reminds me of too many guys I knew when I was younger, but the stories! Sometimes I wonder if this could actually happen to a person- then I realize that I had my own stories.... Definitely a good read!

Havana Nocturne: How the Mob Owned Cuba and Then Lost It to the Revolution23 reviews
T. J. English

William Morrow, 2008

Great Historical Read
Mr. English does a great job of telling the real story, or at least as real as can be known. He also takes some time to set the record straight on some common falacies about the mob. Great book, my 16 year old now reading it.

A Must Read...
This is the roadmap and field book for developing and maintaining healthy and unselfish interactions with others. What does another person need to hear in the first 30-seconds to get their attention? Malcolm Gladwell

Back Bay Books, 2002

A year later and I'm still marveling over this book!
I've heard Malcolm Gladwell speak, and he's superb! In this innovative book, whether he's referring to the Maven, or the Connector, it's relatable to all individuals. If you're looking for a light leadership book that brings up very INNOVATIVE topics, this is it! For additional tips on leadership, I'd also recommend taking a course at www.corporatetrendsetters.com.

Howard Zinn

Harper Perennial Modern Classics, 2005

No sugar coated, political correctness here!
Well written, intensely compelling, and mind expanding. This book should be a mandatory read for every high school student in the country. Throw away The American Pageant, and hand out Zinn's book instead.
