The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves...
I can't think of a better novel about Viet Nam, or, for that matter, about all the wars since Korea. And it's set in Urbana and Barcelona. I'd say go figure, but then GUARD OF HONOR, perhaps the best novel about WWII, was set in Florida. Maybe it's because Moltke the Elder was right when he said "Everything in war is very simple." Life is different.

A Lyrical Story of Healing
The Speed of Light is a a novel with elements of epic poetry that can help each of us learn about our own wounds and how they might be healed. Elizabeth Rosner has written an important book that left me deeply moved on two levels. First, there is the story of three characters each struggling to live life under the shadow of their families being victims of the most horrible crimes against ...

Geoff Simmons, M.D.. What Darwin Didn't Know
Worthwhile read. I found the first half a little heavy in the physics and sometimes hard to follow, but the bottom line was always readily apparent. The second half was particularly worthwhile. It does make one think about light, Schroeder's theories and how scientists truly are at a loss to explain it's quirky behavior and ubiquitous presence.

Carlson is excellent again
This novel may be considered a young adult work by some readers, but it's a young adult novel in the way that _The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn_ or _To Kill a Mockingbird_ or _Great Expectations_ or any number of other books with young protagonists are. It's about 3 friends and their adventures over that strange, wonderous summer between eleven and twelve... That summer when suddenly the ...

The Story of a "fantastic" Scientific Speculation.
This is a very fascinating story and the best book I have ever read. I am still not old enough to have studied all the subject presented in the book in the language of Mathematics, but the presentation was fantastic and I understood every bit of the book and I can now talk for hours about Cosmology with my friends who haven't a clue about this. In one sentense, this is the best book I have read ...

More than just another Holocaust book
I had this book for a long time before I read it, mostly because my initial reaction to the cover was, "Oh no, not another book about the Holocaust." Not that the Holocaust isn't important, but is that the ONLY Jewish topic that kids read about these days? When I finally did open the book, I found out that it's not about the Holocaust per se, although that does play a part in the plot. It's ...

A War Without People
In his Foreword to this book, Virilio draws a blackboard sketch for us of his basic historical metanarrative, namely, that he sees three distinct epochs of warfare: a prehistoric epoch of tactical war in which weapons of obstruction dominated, such as ramparts, bastions, armor and fortresses; a historical - strategic epoch in which weapons of destruction are predominant, such as lances, bows, ...

Light as a Paradigm Shift in Artificial Intelligence
I am a layman- no physical science degree or job, but I have an interest in new technology applications, particularly light. Nolte's book is great for both the layman as well as the expert- the difference being how fast you will be able to read and absorb the building blocks of knowledge he stacks up (e.g; the physics of how humans see). His focus is a new paradigm of computer intelligence based ...

This novel contains apparently some of autobiography and so, mentions sometimes his previous work, "Soldados de Salamina". Because the protagonist is, more or less, a copy of the author, at first, a young aspirant to writer. At the beginning he works and survives poorly in Barcelona. A teacher and scholar from these university recommends him for a vacancy as Spanish language and literature ...

I expected this book to be a course in speed reading. I confess that I was unable to read this book in full, but it focuses on a "holistic" method of reading, talks about homeschooling, wearing an eyepatch to give you a new perspective, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Rapid Eye Technology (which the book calls "one of the most exciting alternative healing methods of this century," for curing the ...
