The Spirituality of Imperfection: Storytelling and the Search for Meaning46 reviews
Ernest Kurtz, Katherine Ketcham

Bantam, 1993

From AA to Zeitgeist
This is a remarkably wise book, whatever your spiritual history. From Desert Fathers and Thomas Merton to the Tao Te Ching, its scope is broad and charged with a vision of understanding that stands at the base of any effort to the growth of the soul through the five indices: prayer, observance, disciline, thought and action.

True Spirituality17 reviews
Francis Schaeffer

Tyndale House Publishers, 1972

Life changing
This book was out of print for quite some time. I first read it when it was loaned to me by a friend. What I learned from this book opened my eyes and changed my view of spirituality entirely. I was thrilled to find it back in print and to have a copy for my own home library. I would recommend True Spirituality to any Christian.

Sister Mary Elizabeth O'Brien does an excellent job of demonstrating Spirituality in Nursing. I was so impressed, I began using her book as the basis for my Master's Thesis.

Essential Spirituality: The 7 Central Practices to Awaken Heart and Mind24 reviews
Roger Walsh

Wiley, 2000

Great and practical book!
This is a great "spirituality for beginners" book. It is easy to read and full of great exercises, which can practically be done anywhere (just make sure its someplace you are least likely to be distracted and disturbed). This book will help you develop spiritually and mentally by helping to invigorate your sense of compassion and love for all of nature's beings.

Reel Spirituality,: Theology and Film in Dialogue (Engaging Culture)5 reviews
Robert K. Johnston

Baker Academic, 2006

Evangelical theologian recognizes a wideness in God's grace
This volume by Fuller Seminary professor Robert K. Johnston is a readable introduction to film criticism from a thoroughly Christian perspective. Johnston is evangelical in outlook, and yet does not sacrifice his love for cinema to a fearful, fundamentalistic disdain for human culture. Rather, from the outset, he affirms the Christian truth that God's grace is to be found everywhere (what ...

Emotionally Healthy Spirituality: Unleash the Power of Authentic Life in Christ17 reviews
Peter Scazzero

Thomas Nelson, 2006

Finally...
I purchased this book based on the recommendation of a trusted friend. Wow! This is one book every Christian should read, regardless of denomination. It not only explains so much, but it talks about how to fix it and actually GROW in our faith. Truly a wonderful book.

Integral Spirituality: A Startling New Role for Religion in the Modern and Postmodern World28 reviews
Ken Wilber

Shambhala, 2007

Brilliant Mythmaker
I like this guy and his style and what he has to say. For example, my vocabulary really grew just from reading his book--and continues to do so. At the very least Mr. Wilber's writings are mind expanding and thought provoking. His AQAL philosophy adds dimensions and depth to one's personal intelligence and life view. I will probably spend the next few months running down all the major references ...

The Little Book of Atheist Spirituality15 reviews
Andre Comte-Sponville

Viking Adult, 2007

A must read for serious thinkers
One way I rate a book is how many bookmarks I make in it. This little book inspired many on my part. Comte-Sponville arguments for no god are as readable as any I have read. The section on Spirituality however does require rereading to get its meaning. It is a very readable book for such tough subjects and a more comfortable rendering than that of Richard Dawkins and others.

Spirituality for the Skeptic: The Thoughtful Love of Life4 reviews
Robert C. Solomon

Oxford University Press, USA, 2006

Extremely Intelligent, Thought-Provoking
This is a fascinating book. NOT for the New Age "spirituality" group, but for intelligent, skeptical thinkers interested in the investigations of someone who knows Western philosophy well (and a little Eastern) who is asking how to live one's life. Solomon defines spirituality as "the thoughtful love of life" and then asks how we can practice it. This is a book I go back to and reread ...

Things Hidden: Scripture As Spirituality8 reviews
Richard Rohr

Saint Anthony Messenger Press, 2008

THINGS HIDDEN: Scripture as Spirituality (Richard Rohr)
THINGS HIDDEN: Scripture as Spirituality, Richard Rohr (2008). Franciscan prophet and teacher Richard Rohr is a mystic rather than a systematic theologian: indeed he believes `systematizing' theology runs the risk of doing it violence and missing the point: theology is to be experienced in a life of faith, hope and love, not organized into creeds. Is he `evangelical'? I would say `yes' ...

Psychology, Theology, and Spirituality in Christian Counseling (AACC Library)5 reviews
Mark R. McMinn

Tyndale House Publishers, 1996

A must for therapists who seek to integrate spirituality
McMinn writes for the Christian professions, the religious, and the lay people. He also seeks to speak to those who are pursuing active integration of faith, psychology and theology. It is very refeshing reading as he discusses classic Christianity and its applicability to everyday problems. With the popular publication's sloppy "a little bit of this and a little bit of that" view of ...

Spirituality For Dummies (For Dummies (Religion & Spirituality))10 reviews
Sharon Janis

For Dummies, 2008

Great introduction to spirituality!
This book is a great introduction to spiritual concepts which has helped me begin a spiritual journey. The book presents a different way of looking at the world, which is helpful to me since I was raised in a traditional Christian environment. This book has given me enough background information to understand more complicated texts, which is exactly why I bought it. The author does a ...

Christian Spirituality: Five Views of Sanctification4 reviews

IVP Academic, 1988

clear up the confusion
Do you realize that the terms justification and sanctification are as confusing as they sound? How many debates over these issues have molded and effected church history? Books like these can analyze such views putting them side by side. How often have people who stood behind the pulpit made an undistinguishable clatter which have left their congregations with an obscure reference on how they ...

Jesus Brand Spirituality: He Wants His Religion Back
Ken Wilson

Thomas Nelson, 2008

"Jesus wants his religion back…so it can be for the world again" So begins this expertly written book by Ken Wilson, a pastor, practitioner and pilgrim to engage those drawn to the fascinating figure buried in the messy field of religion. Jesus Brand Spirituality is for those disillusioned by the current swirl of cultural conflict, moralism, and religious meanness that amounts to a form of trademark infringement on the movement that ...

Celtic Spirituality (Classics of Western Spirituality)4 reviews

Paulist Press, 2000

An excelent overview for the intelligent and serious reader
In my eighteen or so years as a Celtic Catholic, and especially in the past five years, I have seen the term "Celtic Christianity" applied to everything from the sublime (love of nature and the saints) to the ridiculous (giving communion to your dog) to the utterly intolerable (worshipping pagan gods). Some modern writers on the theme do an excellent job of interpreting this strand of the ...

Henri Nouwen: A Spirituality of Imperfection6 reviews
Wil Hernandez

Paulist Press, 2006

A Perfect Book on the Imperfection of Nouwen
This is a wonderful book! Will Hernandez has done a great job of probing Nouwen's writings and thoughts, citing key Biblical references and giving insight into Christian Spirituality that has been so profoundly impacted by the deep faith and soul-struggle of Henri Nouwen. This text is a powerful integrative resource for those that are familiar with Nouwen's writings and personal journals. But ...

Mother Earth Spirituality: Native American Paths to Healing Ourselves and Our World (Religion and ...22 reviews
Ed Mcgaa

HarperOne, 1990

A true classic
I read this book while spending the summer backpacking around the Rocky Mountains. Anything that you carry around in a backpack for that long has to be worth the weight and this one definitely was. Thanks Eagle Man! :)

Spirituality of the Psalms (Facets)4 reviews
Walter Brueggemann

Augsburg Fortress Publishers, 2001

Brueggemann Shines Again
Barbara and I both avidly admire The Psalms and Dr. Brueggemann. Our greatest expectation for the summer is to hear him preach and teach at the Presbyterian Conference on Music and Worship at Montreat. I am deeply indebted to him for his keenly inspired commentary on GENESIS. For two quarters of Preaching Genesis, I have tuned-into his studies in depth to prepare several sermons and hear young ...
