Casey at the Bat5 reviews
Ernest Lawrence Thayer

Steck-Vaughn, 1994

Casey Strikes Out; Polacco Hits a Homer!
Thayer's classic ballad, `Casey at the Bat,' is greatly enhanced by Patricia Polacco's brilliantly achieved, big-hearted illustrations. Ms. Polacco captures emotion, action, and character through wittily exaggerated, slightly loopy pictures, and through lots of uncrowded background shenanigans. It's very cinematic: She effectively isolates action through extreme close-ups, and extends time ...

All by Herself: 14 Girls Who Made a Difference3 reviews
Ann Whitford Paul

Raintree Steck-Vaughn Publishers, 1999

Wish my girls had this inspiration when they were children!
The best book I have ever read for making the link between wonderful acts of imagination and/or courage in childhood and the larger than life heros these women became. This has got to be a christmas or birthday book for reading to or by girls from 5 to 10.

Sebastian: A Book About Bach (Single Title)4 reviews
Jeanette Winter

Steck-Vaughn, 1999

If we could only give it more stars!
My daughter and I loved this book! It's story is easily understood and the beautiful illustrations are sweet and peaceful and really bring the words to life. While the author did write about Bach's church music, she did not mention his devotion to God. But there are other books about that. This is a book for everyone.

America's Champion Swimmer4 reviews
David A. Adler

Steck-Vaughn, 2000

A Wonderful Book.
A wonderful book. It gave sooo much information. Parents will love it. I feel the author tried to tell us something. I think he wants us to keep trying to accomplish our goals and not be bothered by what other people say.

Cass Three Billy Goats Gruff-Apov (Another Point of View)4 reviews
Alvin Granowsky

Steck-Vaughn, 1995

A hilarious children's book
I first received a copy of this book at the International Reading Association's 1996 conference when I was acting as a staff development assistant and enrichment teacher at an elementary school. It is hilarious. First, you read the traditional The Three Billy Goats Gruff to the kids and then you read the Just a Friendly Old Troll story which is told from the point of view of the troll. It is ...

Mammalabilia: Poems and Paintings8 reviews
Douglas Florian

Steck-Vaughn, 2000

Wonderful - Even for an infant
My daughter is only 5 months old, however, the rhythm of the poems in Mammalabilia keeps her attention. We are able to read the whole book before she rolls away. She finds the large pictures to be captivating and "talks" right along with me as I read to her. I believe that this is a book she can grow with. What a wonderful way to introduct poetry to young children!

Insectlopedia8 reviews

Steck-Vaughn, 2000

Great fun, even for kids who aren't "insect lovers"
This is a book of poems about insects. The poems are great; their content is funny and rhythmic. Through the poems we learn about the various insects. Some have very creative text formatting such as the inchworm; the text is shaped like a humped-up inchworm. The illustrations are very creative collages that are unique compared to most other children's books. I began reading this when my first ...

The ghost in the swing16 reviews
Janet Patton Smith

Steck-Vaughn Co, 1973

Favorite Childhood Book
It took me years of searching to finally find a copy of this book. I really was lucky to get a hardback that was in excellent shape. I think this is an enchanting story that though it is filled with spine tingling moments (considering the age group for which it was written) over all it's just a well written book that offers a story that is unique. I wish some group like Disney would find such ...

Indians who lived in Texas,2 reviews
Betsy Warren

Steck-Vaughn Co, 1970

The ONLY book of this type on the market!
With a subject as narrow as Native Americans in a single and specific state, this book was very thorough. Subjects ranged from individual tribe appearance and dress to the specific foods and dwellings used by each. There are detailed maps showing which region each of the ten chief tribes inhabited while in Texas and what caused the disappearance of most from this state. As a research tool for ...

The Future of Willow Springs Park (Publish-a-Book)2 reviews
Allison Taylor

Raintree Steck-Vaughn Publishers, 1996

This book makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time.
Allison Taylor is a brilliant author. Her inventive language and vivid imagery make this a must read. Once you start you can't stop. The ending is creative but I'm not going to tell you. You will just have to read it for yourself. Go out and get it today. People are ripping them off the shelves; get it while you still can.

Lives of the Athletes: Thrills, Spills (And What the Neighbors Thought) (Lives of the)2 reviews
Kathleen Krull

Raintree Steck-Vaughn Publishers, 1999

Lives of the Athletes
The Krull and Hewitt series of books is wonderful. I'm an adult and I find them fascinating reading. There is a great amount of information about each character in only a couple of pages. The description of each athlete is informative, interesting and witty. Hewitt's illustrations are chock full of information. I found myself turning the page to look at the illustration as I read the text ...

Charro: The Mexican Cowboy (Single Title)2 reviews
George Ancona

Steck-Vaughn, 1999

Charro: The Mexican Cowboy
Lovely photos and words reveal a traditional sport, way of life and skills comparable to the American rodeo. Boys, girls, young women and men join in for a day of celebration centered around style, courage, horses and skill with a rope. Over 2 & 1/2 dozen Spanish words are introduced through the text. I would reocmmend this book to students in the 4th and 5th grades.

History Takes a Wild Ride (Publish-a-Book)2 reviews
Baron Johnson

Raintree Steck-Vaughn Publishers, 1996

Superb Masterpiece of Modern Literature
No description can sufficiently describe the novel HISTORYTAKES A WILD RIDE. Only divine inspiration would even come close. Irecommend that everyone who reads this buy at least one copy of thebook. At the author's web page, which I am a big fan of, [website],you will find that Mr. Johnson is planning to release several otherworks in the near future. As interested with his first publication ...

Alabama2 reviews
Kathleen Thompson

Raintree Steck-Vaughn Publishers, 1987

The southern belle of the South
There's more to Alabama than the Crimson Tide and Mint Juleps, and this volume explains all. The "Portrait of America" series by Kathleen Thompson is a wonderful introduction for pre-teens to the 50 states and to the places and events that shaped the history of the United States. This "Alabama" installment is particularly good. The book is broken down into sections like "History", "Culture", ...

Marigold and the Dragon2 reviews
Crump

Steck-Vaughn Company, 2000

Best children's book ever
I have had this book for 35 years and I still never tire of it !!The courage that Marigold shows in coming to the aide of a friend is heart warming. It is funny and shows the true value of friendship, no matter who that friend is. Even though the illustrations are in black and white the details are awesome. It really is a must read for any parent to their child !!!

Coppelia (Easy to Read Folktales)2 reviews
Margot Fonteyn, Leo Delibes

Steck-Vaughn, 1998

Coppélia
Margot Fonteyn's rendition of the French ballet Coppélia is wonderful. It is the story of a young man named Franz who is enamoured by a beautiful girl who sits by the window in the house of the mysterious dollmaker, Dr. Coppélius. This of course makes his betrothed, the fiery Swanilda very displeased. However, things are not as they appear to be. The story has an excellent flow to it and the ...

Suzanne J. Murdico

Steck-Vaughn, 1998

It's nice!
I read a lot of books about Monica. I think this book is for all people who already know who Monica is. And if you are a big fan of WTA and of a perfect tennis player like Monica is you should buy this book.
