Shop America: Mid-Century Storefront Design, 1938-1950 5 reviews
Taschen, 2007
Streamline meets Atomic on Main Turn the pages of this fascinating book and you're window shopping on Main Street in the late forties, plenty of consumer goods are just a touch away thanks to large glass windows. The essence of the book is more than ninety ideas for storefronts created by the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company. Each has an artists rendering, sometimes a technical detail or floor plan and technical information ...

Brooklyn Storefronts 3 reviews Paul Lacy
W. W. Norton, 2008
"A striking canvas that reflects the cultural vibrancy and creative energy of Brooklyn life" This small book celebrates the random communities that have serviced local neighborhood needs, in this case Brooklyn and surrounding areas, Bedford Stuyvesant, Flatbush, Crown Heights, Sunset Park, even the waterfront neighborhoods from Greenpoint to Gowanus. As the author witnesses a favorite local bodega replaced by a trendy upscale restaurant, he realizes that these multi-cultural stores will ...

9226 Kercheval: The Storefront that Did Not Burn, With a New Preface (Ann Arbor Paperbacks) 2 reviews Nancy Milio
University of Michigan Press/Regional, 2000
I've waited a long time for this reprint! Back in 1970, wading through a mire of academic prose in graduate school, I was dazzled by my discovery of Nancy Milio's new book, "9226 Kercheval." Not only was the author a nurse (like me), she was working in the community (like me). Better still, she wasn't pontificating or theorizing. In her own voice, she told the story of how she worked with residents of a restless, inner-city ...

The New Atlas of Human Anatomy 12 reviews
MetroBooks (NY), 2000
Simply wonderful. This book is an excellent reference tool for the layman who wants to know more about human anatomy. The illustrations are unsurpassed. I was astonished to see that it had such a low average customer rating, until I read the negative reviews. One is apparently from a "serious student of anatomy." I will confess ignorance as to whether it would suffice as a textbook for professional anatomy ...

America's 5 & 10 Cent Stores: The Kress Legacy 1 review Bernice L. Thomas
Preservation Pr, 1997
A fascinating, scholarly, generous and surprising book. Ms. Thomas' book is architecturally precise, but more than that, it is a generous and fascinating story of the Kress variety chain. What is surprising is that Kress had its own architectural division--and a spirit of community involvement. This is what "Main Street" once meant. Wonderful pictures--highly recommended, and Thomas is to be commended for her research and her excellent book.

Storefront Revolution: Food Co-Ops and the Counterculture (Perspectives on the Sixties) 3 reviews Craig Cox
Rutgers University Press, 1994
A look at the co-op movement of the 1970's This book gives a history of the food co-ops in Minneapolis in the 1970's. I found this book very interesting, mainly because I am a resident of Mpls and learned the history of the co-ops I shop at today. I found the tales of the co-op wars, in which the anarchists and communists battled for control of the co-ops, to be most interesting. I learned about what worked and what didn't work in such ...
