The Caregiver's Tale: The True Story Of A Woman, Her Husband Who Fell Off The Roof, And Traumatic Brain Injury4 reviews
Marie Therese Gass, 2007

Caregiving: Love, Friendship, Frustration, Laughter
I found it hard to put this book down. It's so well written that it just draws you right in. I think it would benefit anyone who's involved in care giving. It's told from the caregiver's point of view and you feel like you're there going through each crisis as it happens. It made me realize that a trauma changes not only the victim's life, but also the lives of the family. It made see things ...

Brain Quest Bedtime: 175 Stories, Poems, and Jokes to Read Together with Questions and Answers (Brain Quest)3 reviews
Brain Quest

Workman Publishing Company, 2002

Typicall Brainquest product
I have purchased the My First Brainquest, Preschool Brainquest, Kindergarten Brainquest, and Bathtime Brainquest. This is a typical Brainquest item! I love this series. So far they have all been age appropriate and my 4 yo has learned a lot! My only complaint is that doing these questions before bedtime makes her more talkative and less ready for bed! So now we don't do them right before bed.

BBC Brain Story: Unlocking Our Inner World of Emotions, Memories, Ideas and Desires1 review
Susan A. Greenfield

DK ADULT, 2001

Informational Book
After viewing an excellent pbs science program on strange conditions caused by physical problems with the brain. I wanted to continue the journey and shopped around for a book that would explore the brain in more depth. This book presents a macro view of the brain and a thought provoking experiment that explored the interaction between the conscious and subconscious. The book is easy to ...

Phineas Gage: A Gruesome but True Story About Brain Science15 reviews
John Fleischman

Houghton Mifflin, 2004

Phineas's pipe momment
This is a very cool/or sad story. It took place in Vermont in 1848. In a mine working with explosives, Phineas was working and a pile of pipes were about 13 feet away when explosives went off and a pipe went threw Phineas's head and he survived. This story is great for ages anyone 11 to 13. The book is mainly about brain science. This book shows where the accident happened and how doctors ...

The Brain That Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science (James H. ...98 reviews
Norman Doidge

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2007

Accessible Science
Dr Doigdge does an amazing job of teaching difficult scientific concepts in a manner that made me want to keep reading because I was understanding it. Who would have thought that a nonfiction book about brain plasticity would become a page turner? I hope he writes another book about the brain. As he points out, we are discovering so much about it and at a fast pace.

Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain23 reviews
Maryanne Wolf

Harper, 2007

Good Popularization of Serious Research
It is perhaps more enjoyable to listen to this on the CDs, as I did while waiting for the paperback to come out. So many people were citing it that I felt I needed to know what was in it and didn't want to buy the older hardback version in case there were any significant updates. I purchased the paperback as well, because I needed to be able to cite accurately the parts that I wanted to share ...

Pass this book along to your friends and family
Mason opens our eyes to the realities of modern medicine, we learn that fixing the outside is often the simpler part of the equation. His insight & the passion he puts into each story makes for a captivating read. I walked away from this book realizing that unless we want to resign ourself to cities filed with "the walking dead" we must change the way society approaches Brain injury, this book ...

Brain Quest Bathtime: 175 Stories, Poems, Questions and Answers--Even Jokes and Riddles--to Read Together ...3 reviews
Brain Quest

Workman Publishing Company, 2002

Another great Brainquest product
Of all the Brainquest products my daughter has (My first, preschool, kindergarten, and bedtime) this one has the most challenging questions for her. Many of these questions has caused us to do experiments with her (such as what happens to water when it freezes and when it is boiled). The pages are made of a waterproof plastic like material so you can leave them in the tub. All in all, another ...

Great Brain,The (Great Brain)79 reviews
John D. Fitzgerald

Puffin, 2004

A great read but BEWARE.
This book is a wonderful protrait of 19th century rural America, but people should be aware that it was written at a time when there was much more freedom of speech than we have today. Topics in the book include suicide, religious intolerance and fear of immigrants. There is a scene where the boys go skinny dipping and also one story concerns John mating his dog, so this book probably should not ...

It is an inspiring and beautifully written book.

Electronic Brains: Stories from the Dawn of the Computer Age6 reviews
Mike Hally

Joseph Henry Press, 2005

Excellent Lay History of the Early Days of Computers
I have a Computer Science degree, but you don't need one in order to appreciate this book. It is a collection of stories about different computers, companies, and people from the early days of electronic digital computers (although there is a story about an analog, hydraulic one!) in the middle 20th century. And it isn't only US computers: The UK, Australia, and the USSR are also represented. ...

The Story of Brain Cell (Bang on the Door)3 reviews
Jackie Robb, Berny Stringle

Chrysalis Children's Books, 1999

One of the cutest little books around
A strange little book, I only bought it because my two year old bit it in the store, and it has been a real treasure. This little boy who loves cars, trucks, and tools more than anything adored this book above all others. It keeps him interested in reading, and the pictures make him giggle. A true gem.

The Self-Made Brain Surgeon and Other Stories

Bison Books, 1999

These thirteen short stories represent Mark Harris?s distinguished work in this genre from 1946 to 1993. They were undertaken at a time when the author was becoming famous as a novelist for such triumphs as Bang the Drum Slowly and The Southpaw . Although Harris loves and writes tellingly about the pleasures of baseball, his primary subject has always been the human condition and the shifts of mortal men and women as they try to understand ...
